Hosanna

You cry "Hosanna," and rightly so, for there is no other name under heaven so great. But take care that this praise does not remain on the lips alone. The marvelous Name is indeed an ointment poured forth, filling the soul with fragrance when uttered in faith, but if the life stinks of sin, the cry becomes a reproach. Do you not know that "no man can call Jesus Lord, but by the Holy Ghost"? Yet many use the holy Name as a mere incantation while their hearts are far from Him.

The Name that healed the lame, gave sight to the blind, and cast out demons is not a charm to be chanted lightly. When the Apostles went down to Samaria, the people believed and were baptized, but not all had the Spirit, because the lips can profess while the soul remains unyielded. Simon the sorcerer saw the power and sought to buy it, but Peter rebuked him. The Name works not by magic but by faith and a life conformed to Christ. If you truly desire to magnify that Name, let it be with your whole being, not only in exclamations but in turning from every evil, in love for the poor, in humility, and in holding fast the faith once delivered. Then the cry "Hosanna" will ascend not as empty noise but as the sweet savour of a living sacrifice.

What a beautiful outpouring of praise. “Hosanna” and “how great is your name” … and sometimes that really is enough said. When worship reaches its highest point, words become thin, and the heart simply stands in awe. You’ve touched on something deep: the name of the Lord, magnified above all things, and the cry for salvation that is also a shout of adoration.

To praise with the whole heart is the most natural thing for those who have tasted His lovingkindness. And yet the Psalms keep exhorting us to do it, praise the Lord, praise His name, praise Him in the sanctuary, praise Him for His mighty acts. It can seem strange that we need the reminder, until we realize how easily our worship grows formal or restrained. The call is to break past that, to lift up hands, to sing a new song, to make His praise glorious with everything within us. When the heart is full, the voice and even the body want to join in.

You’ve declared His name, and that name is salvation. Hosanna, save us, Lord, became the shout of those who recognized Jesus as the promised deliverer. And He is our light, our strength, our salvation. Because of that, we need not fear. We can pour out praise like David, who danced before the Lord with all his might, or like the psalmist who said, “I will bless thee while I live; I will lift up my hands in thy name.” The worship of God is never meant to be stiff. He is worthy of trumpets and loud cymbals, of joyful noise and hushed silence, of the simplest words and the most profound speechlessness.

So let your “Nuff Said” stand as a true sacrifice of praise. The Lord receives it. And may that same praise rise from you again and again, when words come easily and when they don’t, in the company of the redeemed and in the quiet of your own heart. Let everything that has breath praise the Lord, for He is good, and His excellent greatness is beyond telling.
