Chrysostom
Beloved of All
Why do you despair as if God’s help were far off? You do well to cry out for your daughter, for this is the beginning of her healing and your own courage. When the woman of Canaan came to Christ, she did not shrink back though she was full of shame; she pressed forward with holy boldness, saying, “Help me.” She knew that even her need itself was an argument for mercy. So too with your daughter: let her not imagine that hopelessness is a fortress too strong for the Lord. He who saved us by grace when we could do nothing will much more rush to her side when she takes even one trembling step to seek help. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has never overcome it.
Courage is not the absence of fear, but the steady refusal to let fear have the last word. The apostles spoke with boldness because they saw that even bonds and sufferings were turned to victory by God. Your daughter’s battle is not against flesh and blood, but against thoughts that defile the soul like a fortress of the enemy. Yet Christ calls her, as He did the woman with the issue of blood, “Daughter, be of good cheer; your faith has made you well.” Let her hear that voice. And do not stand idle: be the brother who aids his brother, becoming a fortified city. Guard her soul as you would a precious virgin, shutting the door on despair and leading her to the Scriptures, where the medicine of life is kept. There she will find not only strength for herself, but power to free others from the same trap. So pray, and then act with confidence, for the Lord is mighty before God, and He delights to show His strength through our very weakness.
