We join you in bowing our knees to the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ and we make this beautiful prayer from Ephesians our own together with you, asking for the very things the apostle Paul prayed for the church.

We love how you have prayed for the Holy Spirit's strength and power in the inner person, for Christ to dwell in our hearts through faith, and to know the vast dimensions of Christ's love and be filled to overflowing with all the fullness of God. This is the heart of the gospel, that God does not leave us to live in our own strength but strengthens us with power through His Spirit in the inner person, Eph 3:16.

We are encouraged that Christ dwells in our hearts through faith, Eph 3:17, not as a visitor but as one who makes His home in us. As we trust Him, we become rooted and grounded in love, Eph 3:17, like a tree with deep roots and a building with a sure foundation. That love is not fleeting emotion but the steadfast love of God which is poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit who was given to us, Rom 5:5, and we know that Christ in us is the hope of glory, Col 1:27.

We pray with you to comprehend with all the saints what is the width and length and height and depth, and to know Christ's love which surpasses knowledge, Eph 3:18-19. His love is wider than our sin, longer than eternity, deeper than our despair and higher than the heavens. We cannot fully understand it with our minds because it passes knowledge, yet we can know it experientially as we walk with Him, for God is love, and he who remains in love remains in God, and God remains in him, 1 John 4:16. To be filled with all the fullness of God, Eph 3:19, is to be made complete in Him, lacking nothing that He desires for us.

We take comfort that He is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that works in us, Eph 3:20. Our prayers may feel small and our faith may feel weak, but His power at work within us is limitless, and His grace is sufficient for us, for power is made perfect in weakness, 2 Cor 12:9.

Father, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, we bow our knees before You from whom every family in heaven and on earth is named. According to the riches of Your glory, strengthen us with power through Your Spirit in our inner persons, that Christ may dwell in our hearts through faith, that we being rooted and grounded in love may be strengthened to comprehend with all the saints the width and length and height and depth and to know the love of Christ which surpasses knowledge, that we may be filled with all Your fullness. Renew us inwardly day by day, 2 Cor 4:16, and let Christ live in us by faith, Gal 2:20. Teach us to abide in Your love and to walk in the power of Your Holy Spirit, bearing fruit for Your glory. Now to You who are able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that works in us, to You be the glory in the church and in Christ Jesus to all generations forever and ever. Thank you for sharing this prayer that is on your heart. We hear a deep longing to know Christ more closely and to be strengthened from the inside out, and we are grateful to stand with you in it.

What stays with us is how this prayer is not about striving to feel more but about being rooted and grounded in love that is already given. To be strengthened in the inner person and to have Christ dwell in our hearts through faith is a work the Holy Spirit does as he lives with us as Helper and Comforter, gently making that love more real day by day, even when feelings waver.

One simple way we have seen this prayer take root is to linger with it slowly. You might take one line each day this week and turn it into your own quiet prayer before the Lord, pausing to listen as well as to ask, and if you can, share it aloud with one other believer who can pray it with you.

Father, we bow with our friend before you and ask according to your riches that you would strengthen them with power through your Spirit within, that Christ would dwell richly in their heart by faith, and that they would know more deeply the height and depth of your love and be filled with your fullness. Your prayer from Ephesians 3 verses 14 through 20 is a most blessed and scriptural petition, and it is with joy that we bow our knees with you before the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.

You ask to be strengthened with might through His Spirit in the inner person, and this is the very work of the Holy Spirit. Only when the Holy Spirit comes is there any life and force and power. Our sin puts a veil between us and Christ, and the Holy Spirit comes and takes the veil away from our heart and then we see Christ. He does not magnify outward rites, but Christ, for the Holy Spirit ever glorifies Christ. To have Christ dwell in our hearts through faith is to have Him revealed by the Spirit in His love and His saving power, so that we are laid low and Christ is made great to us. Cry then mightily unto God for this inward strengthening, for without the Holy Spirit we utterly fail, and with Him we have entire dependence upon His might alone.

You ask also to be rooted and grounded in love, to comprehend with all those God has made holy what is the width and length and depth and height, and to know the love of Christ which passes knowledge. It is very sweet when the Holy Spirit shows us the love of Christ, how intensely He loves His people. A single word of Christ set in the light of the Holy Spirit shines like a fixed star with light that is never dim. The Spirit of enlightening must open our eyes, for we are poor, ignorant and wavering, and He will tell us how to pray and teach us to keep ourselves in the love of God. Praying in the Holy Spirit, or by the Holy Spirit, is praying in His power and in love and in faith, perfumed with love to Christ and to His saints.

And you ask to be filled with all the fullness of God, to Him who is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think. There is much divine power which has not as yet been manifested in us. Oh for more of the anointing of the Holy Spirit whom Christ is prepared to give immeasurably to those who receive Him. Live near to Christ and live in the Holy Spirit, give yourselves up fully to His divine anointing, and you will know that He dwells with you and shall be in you.
