You have been praying that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, would give you the Spirit of wisdom and revelation to know Him better. Do you see what a blessed thing that is? The very prayer itself is a proof that the Spirit has already begun His quiet work within you. No soul ever truly cried out for a sight of the hidden glories of Christ unless the Spirit had first opened its eyes to see its own poverty and Christ’s fullness. So be of good courage, what you seek is already on its way to you, like the first streaks of dawn before the morning breaks in full.
You long to know the hope of His calling. Picture a great ship out on the deep, too far from land to spy the harbor lights. The crew cannot see the shore, yet they lower the anchor and it grips something solid on the ocean floor, and in that grip they find their safety. Christ Himself is your hope, not a wish that might fail, but a living Person who has gone within the veil and holds you fast. The calling that drew you out of darkness was not a random shout; it was a summons that carries the whole weight of the Almighty. When the Father called you, He set your destination: to be with Christ, like Christ, delighted in by Christ forever. That is the hope. It does not waver with the winds, because it is anchored in the risen Lord. The Holy Spirit can open your heart’s eyes to see this hope so clearly that its light will fall across your darkest day.
And the riches of the glory of His inheritance, you have been asking to know that too. Do not think of it as a treasure locked in a chest far away. The inheritance is Christ Himself, and you are a joint-heir with Him. All that the Father has given to the Son He shares with His own beloved ones. Even now, the Spirit is the “earnest” of that inheritance, the first installment, the pledge, the sweet foretaste. When you feel a sudden warm affection for Jesus, when a promise shines out from the page as though written just for your need, when you are enabled to trust God in the teeth of difficulty, these are samples of the prepared inheritance, bits of heaven dropped into your soul to give you a taste for the full banquet. The riches are unsearchable not because they are locked away, but because you could search them for ten thousand ages and still find new beauty in Christ.
Then there is that third thing you seek: the exceeding greatness of His power toward us who believe. Power! The same power that God exerted when He raised Christ from the dead and seated Him far above all rule and authority, that very power is toward you. Toward you! Not a distant rumor of omnipotence, but the personal operation of the God who cannot be stayed. The Lord Jesus once stood at a tomb and called out, “Lazarus, come forth,” and the dead man rose. That same voice is speaking life into the dead places of your heart, quickening faith, kindling love, awakening hope. The arm that flung out the stars is the arm that steadies you when your steps falter. You feel your own weakness, that is well, for His strength is made perfect in weakness. Do not look so long at the little measure of your own strength that you forget the immeasurable fullness of His. A child in the dark does not need to see the whole path; she only needs to know her father’s hand, and that hand is strong and warm.
So do not grow weary in your seeking. To handle this matter wisely is simply to trust the Lord. The way to know God better is to trust God more. Faith is the open eye, and when you rest your weight fully upon Jesus, the Spirit gives light. He will not let you stumble into despair or confusion. The Lord God omnipotent reigns, and His throne is in no peril. Truth is His daughter, and He shields her with His great shield. Jesus Christ will see the full reward of His sufferings; His bride shall be made ready, and every soul that trusts in Him shall share that eternal wedding feast. Your name is written among those called to that supper. Nothing can pluck you from His hand.
Let this be your confidence, then: the same Lord who fills all in all is filling you, moment by moment, with all that you need. Go on praying, go on trusting, and the Spirit will lift the veil. The day will come when you shall know even as you are known. Until then, rest in the Love that gave the Lamb for you, and in the power that raised Him from the dead.
Father of glory, grant this dear soul the Spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of Christ. Open the eyes of the heart to behold the sure and steadfast hope, the unsearchable riches, and the mighty power that raised Jesus from the dead and set Him at Your right hand. Steady the heart with these great certainties, and cause this one to walk in the full assurance of faith, to the praise of Your glorious grace. Amen.
