"But now I am coming to You; and I am saying these things while I am in the world, so they may have My joy fulfilled within them. I have given them Your Word and the world has hated them. For they are not of the world, just as I am not of the world. I am not asking that You take them out of the world, but that You keep them from the evil one.

Jesus begins by expressing His desire that His joy may be fulfilled in us. This joy is not the fleeting happiness the world offers but a deep, abiding joy that comes from being in intimate relationship with the Father through the Son. "These things I speak in the world, that they may have my joy made full in themselves" (John 17:13 WEB). This joy is our strength (Nehemiah 8:10) and a fruit of the Spirit (Galatians 5:22). Our Lord also emphasizes the importance of God’s Word in our lives. He has given us the Word, and through it, we are sanctified, set apart for holy use. "Sanctify them in the truth. Your word is truth" (John 17:17 WEB). The Word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword (Hebrews 4:12), and it is through the Word that we are cleansed and transformed. We must immerse ourselves in Scripture, allowing it to shape our thoughts, words, and actions. It is our guide, our comfort, and our weapon against the schemes of the evil one.

Jesus prays that we would be kept from the evil one. The world hates us because we are not of the world, just as Christ is not of the world (John 17:14). We are in the world but not of it, and this distinction makes us targets for the enemy’s attacks. Yet, we are not left defenseless. We are kept by the power of God, and we must put on the full armor of God to stand against the wiles of the devil (Ephesians 6:11). We are called to be vigilant, prayerful, and dependent on the Holy Spirit to guard our hearts and minds.

One of the most striking aspects of this prayer is Jesus’ plea for unity among believers. "That they may all be one; even as you, Father, are in me, and I in you, that they also may be one in us; that the world may believe that you sent me" (John 17:21 WEB). This unity is not merely organizational or superficial; it is a deep, spiritual oneness that reflects the unity of the Father and the Son. Jesus also prays that the world may know the Father’s name and experience His love. "I made known to them your name, and will make it known; that the love with which you loved me may be in them, and I in them" (John 17:26 WEB). The revelation of God’s name is not just about knowing His titles but about knowing His character, His nature, and His heart. It is about experiencing His love in a personal and transformative way. As believers, we are called to make God’s name known, to proclaim His love, His mercy, and His salvation to a world that desperately needs Him.

Let us now come before the throne of grace in prayer, lifting up these truths and asking the Holy Spirit to work them deeply into our lives.

Heavenly Father, we bow before You in worship and gratitude for the gift of Your Son, Jesus Christ, and for the privilege of being included in His High Priestly Prayer. Lord Jesus, we thank You for interceding on our behalf, for desiring that Your joy may be made full in us. Fill us with Your joy, Lord, that we may be a light in this dark world, reflecting Your love and hope to those around us.

Father, we ask that You sanctify us by Your truth. Your Word is truth, and we pray that it would dwell richly in our hearts and minds. Help us to meditate on Your Word day and night, that we may be transformed by its power. Cleanse us from all unrighteousness, and renew our minds so that we may discern Your will and walk in Your ways.

Lord, we recognize that we are in a spiritual battle, and we ask for Your protection against the evil one. Keep us from temptation and deliver us from evil. Strengthen us with Your might, and help us to stand firm in the faith, putting on the full armor of God so that we may resist the devil and he will flee from us.

Father, we pray for unity among Your people. Break down the walls of division, pride, and selfishness that hinder the body of Christ. Help us to love one another as You have loved us, to bear with one another in patience, and to forgive as we have been forgiven. May our unity be a testimony to the world that You sent Your Son, and that You love us as You love Him.

Lord Jesus, we long to know the Father’s name and to experience His love in deeper ways. Reveal to us the height, depth, width, and breadth of Your love, that we may be filled with all the fullness of God. Use us as vessels to make Your name known to the world, that others may come to know You and believe in Your saving grace.

We pray all these things in the mighty name of Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior, for it is in His name alone that we have access to You, and it is through His name alone that we are saved. There is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved (Acts 4:12). May we never forget the power and authority that resides in the name of Jesus, and may we always approach You with reverence, humility, and faith.

Father, we surrender ourselves to You anew, asking that Your will be done in our lives as it is in heaven. May we walk in step with the Holy Spirit, bearing fruit that glorifies Your name and advancing Your kingdom here on earth. See that the Savior has poured out His soul for you in this high priestly prayer, and let it anchor your hope. He asks the Father to keep you from the evil one. Do you feel the world's hatred? It is no strange thing, for He gave you His Word and you are not of the world, even as He is not of the world. The world lies in the wicked one, and his sword is the lie. But Christ has never tolerated any truce with the evil one, and His prayer is a mighty shield. Let this truth drive you to holy separation, quit the company in which you once sported; keep away from that house. Sin hardens the conscience, making it easier to fall the next time. Pray without ceasing that you may be kept from your iniquity, for by His great grace you shall find it a greater joy to lose all things for Christ than to gain the world by wrongdoing. Remarkable providences, a text from Scripture, a word from a friend, God uses these to stay your feet, and Christ's honor is at stake in your behavior.

Sanctify them by Your truth; Your Word is truth. This is the prayer, and the more truth you believe, the more sanctified you will be. The truth operates by separating you from the world unto God. Do not fear that this will make you harsh. The branches of the wild olive are grafted in that we should be fellow heirs. The deeper your sense of sin's burden and the majesty of the divine Law, the sweeter your apprehension of guilt removed by Christ's blood. Sanctified affliction lays foundations for your faith by a divine hand, taught not in mere Sunday school fashion but by the Spirit's inward discipline. Be a student of the truth untainted by popular error, for Christ overcame the world by speaking only what He received from the Father. So must you hold fast the truth once delivered to the saints, and your very faithfulness will push you into that place of holy separation from a worldly church.

As for this unity for which our Lord pleads, look for it not in one room or outward organization, but in Christ. We shall never be one till we are sanctified. The unity of Christ is a unity of holy beings, perfected as they grow more prepared for their own place in Him. All saints living upon heavenly bread, drinking the wine well refined that comes from Christ Jesus, this is the spiritual union. Yet do not twist the Savior's words. It is nowhere anticipated that the world will be saved by the visible unity of the church. The world will not be converted en masse by our harmony; the prayer is that they may believe, may know the Father sent the Son. We labor in the world with one aim and purpose, holding forth the word of truth, leaving the results with sovereign grace.

You are sent into the world even as Christ was sent by the Father. Do not seek to be taken out of it, but go forth as one who bears the message. As you feel the urgent weight of souls perishing, be instant in season and out of season. You who have tasted that the Lord is gracious are the very ones fittest to bring others to Christ. A night spent in solitary prayer might put the spurs on you, making you a spiritual knight in God's army for great exploits. By the blood that bought you, by the Spirit that quickened you, by the rest in store, by the hell that awaits sinners, be earnest. Sin is a bond that ties the hands of Christ in our midst when we tolerate it; a worldly church, saying smooth things to those in evil courses, acts like a female Eli and binds the Savior's hands. Flee this.

In the world you shall have tribulation, but be of good cheer. The tempest of conviction, the sorrows that buffet you, are often the very means by which the strong one is driven out. Christ is in open antagonism to Satan, and He conquers by the sword of the Spirit, which is truth. The sinner's heart is taken by storm. Let no man think he can parley with sin or delay decision; many have been ruined to all eternity by it. Today, if you will hear His voice, harden not your heart. Satan is pleased enough to find the house swept and garnished for worse devils if self-reform comes without Christ. Look only to Him who is able to keep you from falling. All this joy of being kept, sanctified, and united is His joy fulfilled in you. He will present you faultless before the presence of His glory with exceeding joy, and then every string of your being shall wake to the sweetest music in praise of God. Christ Himself will have the most joy of all in that day, seeing the travail of His soul. Therefore, trust yourselves entirely to His hands. He alone can save; He alone can keep.

You long to see Christ’s joy fulfilled in you, to be kept from the evil one, to be sanctified by the truth, and to abide in the unity of love that the world may believe. This very prayer, spoken by our Lord before His passion, reveals that the path to these blessings is not a smooth one, for He says plainly that the world will hate those who are not of it. So do not be surprised when reproach comes, even from those of your own household or those you have benefited, for this is the reproach of Christ, to suffer evil for doing good. Yet in this suffering there is great joy, a joy far surpassing any earthly crown. If I could speak of the joy I feel over your soul’s progress, I would say that no monarch rejoicing over ten thousand diadems has the joy I experience when you grow in holiness. That is the very joy of Christ, placed within you by the Holy Spirit, an abundance of joy even in much affliction.

How then shall you be kept from the evil one? Not by being taken out of the world, but by fortifying yourself on all sides with the armor of God. For the devil’s evil art is to deceive you into thinking that sin is indifferent, that a soft and dissolute life can do no hurt. Yet consider those who lived for the belly, whose god was their own appetite, they were destroyed, like those in the wilderness, in Sodom, in the days of Noah. The rich man burning in the furnace learned too late that luxury and ease bring no lasting comfort. Flee from that which is gained by doing wrong, and follow after the victory that comes by suffering wrong patiently. Then you shall live in tranquility and quietness, for the fear of the Lord planted within you is a wall not easily broken, a guard seated inside that needs no outward contrivance.

Sanctification comes by the truth, and Christ’s word is truth. You have that word, and it cleanses as you yield yourself entirely to the Lord. Far greater is it to feed Christ in the hungry than even to raise the dead, for in giving you do good to Him. Let your life be marked by such self-giving, by repudiating all vainglory and living according to what God approves. When you are reproached for turning from the empty ways handed down to you, remember that you bear the reproach of Christ, and in that you are conformed to Him.

Christ prayed that all may be one, as He and the Father are one, and this unity comes when His love dwells in you. Though the love of Christ surpasses knowledge, you shall know it as Christ dwells in your heart, filling you with all the fullness of God. And as He makes the Father’s name known, so you continue to make that name known, not only with words but by a life of virtue. The world does not know the Father, but they will believe when they see a people perfected in unity, loving one another with the very love the Father has for the Son.

So let not your heart be troubled. The very prayer of your High Priest is your guarantee. Entrust yourself to God, who will protect you better than any earthly father. Battle with malicious demons, not with sword but by the will, eradicating evil habits and the conceit that sin is harmless. In this struggle, you will gain a footing in every virtue, and having crowned yourself with the glorious wreaths of victory, you shall see the glory Christ desires to share with you, the glory given Him before the foundation of the world, by the grace and love toward man of our Lord Jesus Christ.

What a profound portion of Scripture you have brought. Jesus, knowing He was about to return to the Father, prayed not only for His disciples but for all who would ever believe through their word. That includes you. Every request He laid before the Father in those moments is being actively answered in your life right now, even when it does not feel that way.

His desire is that His joy be fulfilled in you. That joy does not depend on the absence of trouble. It is the deep, settled assurance that you belong to Him, that He has given you the Father’s word, and that He is actively keeping you. The world, as Jesus said, will hate you because you are not of it any more than He is. But notice He did not ask that you be taken out of the world. He asked the Father to keep you from the evil one. Sometimes the hardest trials come because we are right where He wants us to be, in a world that is saturated with evil, and yet He prays for our protection. His prayer is stronger than every force arrayed against you.

When suffering comes, the natural temptation is to narrow our perspective, to only see the loss or the pain. But Jesus anchors our safety in something unshakable: “Sanctify them by the truth; Your word is truth.” That word sets you apart and washes you clean. It is not a mere text; it is life. Meditating on it, letting it dwell in you richly, will keep you from being shaped by the thinking of an alien world. And that word is also what He uses to keep you from evil. What an astonishing thing, that the very message the world scorns is the guardrail the Father places around your heart.

You are living out what Jesus described. He has sent you into the world just as the Father sent Him. Your presence there is not an accident. And His prayer extends to your unity with other believers, “that they may be perfected in unity, so the world may know You sent Me.” That unity is not something we manufacture; it is the overflow of Christ in you and the Father in Him. It comes as we together share the glory He gave us, the glory of a life surrendered, a love that does not retaliate, a peace that confounds worldly logic.

Scripture reminds us that no one is immune from sorrow. A righteous man may receive both good and adversity from the hand of God, and in the midst of it bless His name rather than sin with his lips. The fear of the Lord always means hating evil, and He will not let His own children get by with it. If you can willingly harbor sin without conviction, then you have reason to be unsettled. But if you are being refined, if your heart is tender and you hate the darkness, take courage. He is answering the Son’s prayer by keeping you from the evil one, even when the process is painful.

So hold fast to what Jesus has made known: the Father’s name. He has revealed His character to you, not as a distant judge but as the Righteous Father whose love for the Son is now placed inside you. When you feel battered by contact with a world that is alienated from God, remember that Christ in you is your hope of glory. Surrender day by day to His will, and you will taste the joy of being zeroed in on His purposes. You are not alone in this; the Son Himself is praying for you, and His prayer will never fall to the ground. May the peace of Christ and the communion of the Holy Spirit rest deeply with you.
