"But now I am coming to You; and I am saying these things while I am in the world, so they may have My joy fulfilled within them. I have given them Your Word and the world has hated them. For they are not of the world, just as I am not of the world. I am not asking that You take them out of the world, but that You keep them from the evil one.

They are not of the world, just as I am not of the world. Sanctify them by the Truth; Your Word is Truth. As You sent Me into the world, I have also sent them into the world. For them I sanctify Myself, so that they too may be sanctified by the Truth. I am not asking on behalf of them alone, but also on behalf of those who will believe in Me through their message, that all of them may be one, as You, Father, are in Me, and I am in You. Father, I want those You have given Me to be with Me where I am, that they may see the glory You gave Me because You loved Me before the foundation of the world. Righteous Father, although the world has not known You, I know You, and they know that You sent Me. And I have made Your Name known to them and will continue to make it known, so that the love You have for Me may be in them, and I in them," John 17:13-26.

We come before the throne of grace with hearts full of reverence and awe as we reflect on the High Priestly Prayer of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ in John 17:13-26. This prayer is not only a profound intercession for His disciples but for all who would believe in Him through their message, including us today. Let us prayerfully consider the richness of this passage and how it applies to our lives.

First, we are struck by Jesus’ desire for His joy to be fulfilled in us. He says, "But now I am coming to You; and I am saying these things while I am in the world, so they may have My joy fulfilled within them." (John 17:13 WEB). This joy is not fleeting or dependent on circumstances but is rooted in our relationship with the Father through Christ. It is the joy of knowing we are loved, chosen, and kept by God. We pray that this joy would overflow in our lives, even in the midst of trials, for it is a testimony to the world of His goodness.

Jesus also emphasizes the importance of God’s Word in our lives: "Sanctify them by the Truth; Your Word is Truth." (John 17:17 WEB). The Word of God is our sanctification, it cleanses, transforms, and sets us apart for His purposes. We must immerse ourselves in Scripture, allowing it to shape our thoughts, words, and actions. Without it, we are vulnerable to the lies of the enemy and the corruption of the world. Let us commit to hiding God’s Word in our hearts, that we may not sin against Him (Psalm 119:11).

We are also reminded of our mission in the world: "As You sent Me into the world, I have also sent them into the world." (John 17:18 WEB). We are not of the world, but we are sent into it to be salt and light (Matthew 5:13-16). This is both a privilege and a responsibility. We must engage the world with the love and truth of Christ, yet remain unspotted by its sin (James 1:27). We pray for boldness to share the gospel and wisdom to navigate the challenges of living as strangers in a foreign land.

The unity of believers is another critical theme in this prayer. Jesus prays, "that all of them may be one, as You, Father, are in Me, and I am in You. May they also be in Us, so that the world may believe that You sent Me." (John 17:21 WEB). Division among believers is a scandal to the world and a hindrance to the gospel. We must pursue unity, not uniformity, but a unity rooted in the truth of God’s Word and the love of Christ. This requires humility, forgiveness, and a willingness to lay down our preferences for the sake of the Kingdom. We rebuke any spirit of division, competition, or pride that seeks to disrupt the body of Christ.

Jesus also prays for our protection: "I am not asking that You take them out of the world, but that You keep them from the evil one." (John 17:15 WEB). The enemy prowls like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour (1 Peter 5:8). We must be vigilant, putting on the full armor of God (Ephesians 6:10-18) and resisting the devil in the name of Jesus. We pray for God’s hedge of protection around us, our families, and the body of Christ, that we may stand firm against the schemes of the evil one.

Finally, we are struck by Jesus’ desire for us to know the Father’s love: "so that the love You have for Me may be in them, and I in them." (John 17:26 WEB). The love of the Father is the foundation of our faith. It is this love that sent Jesus to the cross, and it is this love that sustains us daily. We must abide in His love, allowing it to overflow into our relationships with others. Let us love one another as Christ has loved us (John 13:34-35), for this is the mark of a true disciple.

Heavenly Father, we come before You in the name of Jesus Christ, our High Priest, who ever lives to make intercession for us. We thank You for the privilege of being included in His prayer. Lord, fill us with the joy of Your salvation, that our lives may reflect the hope we have in You. Sanctify us by Your Word, that we may be set apart for Your purposes. Keep us from the evil one and protect us from the snares of this world. Unite us as Your people, that the world may see Your love and believe in Jesus. May Your name be glorified in all we do, and may Your love dwell richly in our hearts. We ask all these things in the mighty name of Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior. Amen.

Let us also take a moment to examine our hearts. Are we truly abiding in Christ’s love, or have we allowed the cares of this world to choke out our joy? Are we walking in unity with our brothers and sisters in Christ, or have we allowed bitterness or division to take root? Are we immersing ourselves in God’s Word, or have we neglected the Truth that sanctifies us? Let us repent of any area where we have fallen short and recommit ourselves to living as faithful disciples of Christ.

Remember, it is only through the name of Jesus that we have access to the Father. There is no other name under heaven by which we must be saved (Acts 4:12). If you have not yet surrendered your life to Christ, we urge you to do so today. Confess your sins, believe in Jesus as your Lord and Savior, and receive the gift of eternal life. The Father loves you and desires a relationship with you through His Son. Do not delay, today is the day of salvation (2 Corinthians 6:2).

What a gift it is to share in the very prayer Jesus offered for us on the eve of His suffering. When we linger over these words, we’re not just reading a passage, we’re standing inside His deepest desires for His people. That alone can steady our hearts: the unity we long for, the protection we need, the mission we carry, all of it rests first on His intercession, not our performance.

It can feel heavy to look at the fractures in the church and the hostility of the world, but we never carry those burdens alone. Christ’s prayer is still alive, and the Spirit is quietly stitching us into the oneness He asked for. Our part is simply to stay close to Him, to let His joy sink into us, and to love the people He has placed beside us right now. That kind of faithful, local togetherness becomes a quiet answer to Jesus’ prayer, a small but real witness to a watching world.

You might find it grounding to pray this passage slowly with a trusted friend or a small group, asking together what it looks like to live out that unity and love in the ordinary places you already inhabit. Not striving, just paying attention to where His grace is already at work.

Jesus, thank You that You prayed for us and that Your prayer never fades. Keep us close to Your heart, protect us from the evil one, and weave us into such genuine love for one another that the world can’t help but see You. What a treasure you have brought before us in this majestic prayer of our Lord! Within these sacred verses beats the very heart of our great High Priest, and every word is laden with consolation for the saints. Notice, I pray you, how Christ speaks of giving His joy to His people. It is a joy fulfilled, a deep and settled gladness, not the froth of carnal delight but the joy of knowing the Father‘s name, of being kept from the evil one, and of being sanctified by truth. This joy springs from the indwelling Word, let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, for it is the seed of all wisdom and the wellspring of holy pleasure.

You see the world‘s hatred plainly declared, yet mark the comfort: “I am not praying that You take them out of the world, but that You keep them from the evil one.” Here is a double mercy. We are not to be secluded monks, but warriors kept in the midst of the fray. And how are we kept? By the Word of truth, by the inward work of the Spirit, and by the intercession of Christ. When you feel the hot breath of the tempter, flee to this promise. He who prayed this prayer is heard always. The evil one cannot pluck you from the Father‘s hand, for you are not of the world, even as Christ is not of the world.

Sanctification by truth is the great work of the Spirit through the Scriptures. The more you believe, the more you are set apart. Every doctrine received, every precept obeyed, draws you further from the world’s vanity and nearer to the likeness of your Lord. Let no one imagine unity can be manufactured by compromising truth. True unity is born of sanctification. When we grow in grace, we discover our oneness in Christ. Do you dwell in God? Then give me your hand! A thousand differences melt away when Christ is all.

The prayer reaches its climax in that ineffable desire: “Father, I want those You have given Me to be with Me where I am, that they may see My glory.” This is the heaven of heavens, to behold Christ’s glory and to be with Him. And even now, He makes the Father‘s name known to us, that the love wherewith the Father loved the Son may be in us. Think of it! The eternal love that flowed between the Father and the Son before the world began, poured into your soul by the Holy Ghost. This love is the evidence of faith, for faith works by love. If you trust Christ, you will love Him, and loving Him, you will love the brethren, and so the world may believe though not all will be saved.

Lay hold of this prayer as your own. Let it direct your footsteps in the path of separation from the world, yet engagement with it as one sent. You are sent as Christ was sent, to make known the Father’s name. The world is full of sorrow, but in the midst of its storms, the promise stands sure: “In righteousness you shall be established; you shall be far from oppression, for you shall not fear.” Keep yourself from your iniquity, cling to the Word, and let the love of God be the daily portion of your soul. Christ’s bonds have set you free; now live as one bound only to Him.

The prayer you have offered from the Gospel of John reveals the deepest longing of our Lord for those who follow Him. He desires that His own joy be fulfilled in you, a joy that no trouble of this present life can steal away. He spoke these things while still walking among us so that when sorrows come, you would not be cut off from that joy, but would find it made perfect. For if you abide in His love, the very trials that seem so bitter become a means of deepening your security in Him.

See how this joy is bound inseparably to love. His command is that you love one another as He has loved you. The love of God and love for your brethren are intertwined like a chain; you cannot grasp one without the other. If you wish to remain in Him, then pour yourself out for those around you, sharing their tears and rejoicing in their gladness. Such genuine love purges the soul of envy and binds the faithful together in a bond nothing can break.

He prays not that you be taken out of the world, but that you be kept from the evil one. What is this protection? His own Word, which is truth. Sanctify yourself by it; let it dwell within you richly, and you will have a guard seated in your heart that no outward enemy can shake. The fear of God instilled by His Word becomes a wall unbreachable, and He Himself watches over you more truly than any earthly protector ever could.

Unity was so weighty on His heart that He prayed that we all might be one, even as He and the Father are one. This is not a surface agreement but a sharing in divine life: Christ in you, and the Father in Him. When the world sees such love, such harmony, then it believes that the Father sent the Son. That unity is your witness, and it flows from the very love with which the Father has loved the Son being poured into you.

Consider how He made known the Father’s name, unlocking that love for you. No longer are you under the curse of a broken law, for Christ fulfilled it entirely, becoming the servant of the promises to the fathers so that you might be freed from that bondage. You are saved by grace, and that grace now enables you to love with a love that is not of this world.

Knowing this, then, let us follow after the victory that comes not by returning evil for evil, but by patience and long-suffering. Let us pursue true freedom, the freedom of a soul anchored in virtue alone. For if we do so, we shall both have tranquility in this life and attain the good things to come, by the grace and love toward mankind of our Lord Jesus Christ, to whom be glory world without end. Amen.

The prayer our Lord prayed on the night He was betrayed reaches you now, full of life and certainty. He asked that His own joy would be fulfilled in you. That joy isn’t a shallow cheerfulness that flees when possessions vanish or when grief sits heavy, the way Job’s first test stripped everything away. It is the deep, steady gladness of knowing the Father’s name and being held in His truth, no matter what. When you feel naked and bare, like a person reduced to the essence of existence, you can still say, “blessed be the name of the Lord,” without charging God foolishly. That is the mark of a heart kept by His word.

You are not of this world, just as Jesus is not of it. So do not be surprised when friction comes. The enemy studies a life like a general examining a city before an assault, searching for a weak point in the defenses. Yet the Lord’s prayer for you is not that you would be removed from this hostile landscape, but that you would be guarded from the evil one and sanctified by the truth. His word is that truth. When you feed on it more earnestly than you seek your daily bread, you are set apart. You are fitted for the mission He sends you into, armed with a wisdom the world cannot produce.

Jesus also prayed for those who would believe through your message. That means He had you in view, and He was weaving your life into the great purpose of making the Father known. The unity He desires for His people is not a negotiated truce or an external cooperation. It is a sharing in the very life of the Father and the Son, a mutual indwelling that displays a glory the world can see. When His love is the atmosphere you breathe, and you refuse to treat suffering as a direct punishment from an angry hand, you shut the mouths of those who would reduce life to a simple equation. The triumphing of the wicked is short, and the joy of the hypocrite lasts only a moment, but the one who knows the Father’s love endures. You are not building your hope on gaining the world, but on the Word who became flesh and dwelt among us full of grace and truth.

So let this prayer of Jesus be your anchor. The righteous Father is not unknown to you, for Christ has declared His name and continues to make it known, so that the very love the Father has for the Son might dwell in you. Rest there. The present lightness of affliction is working an eternal weight of glory beyond all comparison. You will see His face with joy, and until then, you are kept, not because you are strong, but because the One who prayed for you is faithful. May that joy fill you, may His truth guard you, and may your unity with others become a living testimony that the world may believe.
