"But now I am coming to You; and I am saying these things while I am in the world, so they may have My joy fulfilled within them. I have given them Your Word and the world has hated them. For they are not of the world, just as I am not of the world. I am not asking that You take them out of the world, but that You keep them from the evil one.

They are not of the world, just as I am not of the world. Sanctify them by the Truth; Your Word is Truth. As You sent Me into the world, I have also sent them into the world. For them I sanctify Myself, so that they too may be sanctified by the Truth. I am not asking on behalf of them alone, but also on behalf of those who will believe in Me through their message, that all of them may be one, as You, Father, are in Me, and I am in You. May they also be in Us, so that the world may believe that You sent Me. I have given them the glory You gave Me, so that they may be one as We are one — I in them and You in Me — that they may be perfected in unity, so the world may know You sent Me and have loved them just as You have loved Me.

Father, I want those You have given Me to be with Me where I am, that they may see the glory You gave Me because You loved Me before the foundation of the world. Righteous Father, although the world has not known You, I know You, and they know that You sent Me. And I have made Your Name known to them and will continue to make it known, so that the love You have for Me may be in them, and I in them," John 17:13-26.

We lift our hearts in awe and gratitude as we reflect on the High Priestly Prayer of our Lord Jesus Christ in John 17. This sacred passage is not merely words on a page, it is the very heartbeat of our Savior’s intercession for us, His beloved children. How deeply we are moved by His desire that we would experience His joy fulfilled within us, that we would be kept from the evil one, and that we would be sanctified by the truth of God’s Word. Jesus prayed these things while still in the world, knowing the trials we would face, yet He did not ask for us to be removed from the world. Instead, He asked the Father to keep us, to guard us, to hold us fast in the midst of the world’s hatred and the enemy’s schemes.

We are struck by the weight of His words: "Sanctify them by the Truth; Your Word is Truth." The Word of God is not a suggestion or a mere guide, it is the very foundation of our sanctification, the means by which we are set apart for His purposes. And how humbling it is to hear Jesus say, "For them I sanctify Myself, so that they too may be sanctified by the truth." He gave Himself wholly, that we might be made holy. This is the love that compels us, the love that calls us to live not for ourselves, but for the One who died and rose again.

The unity Jesus prayed for is not a superficial harmony, but a deep, spiritual oneness rooted in the Father and the Son. "That all of them may be one, as You, Father, are in Me, and I am in You." This unity is not optional, it is essential for the world to believe that the Father sent the Son. When the body of Christ is divided, when we allow bitterness, pride, or selfish ambition to take root, we grieve the heart of God and hinder the Gospel. But when we walk in love, when we bear with one another in humility, when we seek the good of others above our own, the world sees a reflection of Christ. They see the love of the Father poured out in us, and they are drawn to Him.

We also see in this prayer the glorious truth that Jesus desires for us to be with Him where He is, to behold His glory, the same glory the Father gave Him before the foundation of the world. This is our hope, our inheritance, our eternal destiny. And yet, even now, we are called to make the Father’s name known, just as Jesus did. We are called to live in such a way that the world sees the love of God in us and comes to know Him.

But let us not miss the urgency of this prayer. Jesus did not pray these things for a select few, He prayed for all who would believe in Him through the message of the disciples. That includes us. And if we are to fulfill His prayer, we must examine our hearts. Are we walking in the joy He desires for us? Are we guarding ourselves from the evil one through prayer, the Word, and fellowship with other believers? Are we pursuing unity with our brothers and sisters in Christ, or are we allowing division to take root? Are we making the Father’s name known, or are we living in ways that bring dishonor to Him?

We must also address a sobering reality: many who claim to follow Christ live as if His prayer does not apply to them. They indulge in sin, justify disobedience, and treat the Word of God as a buffet from which they can pick and choose what they like. But Jesus did not pray that we would be comfortable in the world, He prayed that we would be kept from the evil one while being sent into the world. This means we cannot love the world or the things of the world (1 John 2:15-17). It means we must die to ourselves daily, take up our cross, and follow Him (Luke 9:23). It means we must flee from sexual immorality, idolatry, and all forms of unrighteousness (1 Corinthians 6:18-20).

And what of those who have not yet surrendered their lives to Christ? Jesus made it clear that no one comes to the Father except through Him (John 14:6). There is no other name under heaven by which we must be saved (Acts 4:12). If you are reading this and have not placed your faith in Jesus Christ, we plead with you to consider the weight of these words. Jesus did not come to give us a better life in this world, He came to give us eternal life in the world to come. He died for your sins, rose from the grave, and offers you forgiveness and reconciliation with God. But you must repent, turn away from your sins, and place your trust in Him alone. This is the only way to be saved.

Now, let us pray together in the authority of Jesus’ name, claiming the promises of His High Priestly Prayer:

Heavenly Father, we come before You in the name of Your Son, Jesus Christ, who interceded for us with such love and fervor. We thank You for His prayer, for His desire that we would have His joy fulfilled in us. Lord, fill us afresh with Your joy today, not the fleeting happiness of this world, but the deep, abiding joy that comes from knowing You. Guard our hearts from the evil one, we pray. Protect us from his lies, his temptations, and his schemes. Keep us rooted in Your Word, for it is Truth, and it is our sanctification.

Father, we confess that we have often failed to live in the unity You desire. We have allowed pride, selfishness, and division to creep into our relationships with other believers. Forgive us, Lord. Help us to love one another as Christ has loved us. May our unity be a testimony to the world that You sent Your Son, and that You love them even as You love Him.

We pray for those who do not yet know You. Open their eyes to see the truth of the Gospel. Soften their hearts to receive Your Word. Use us, Lord, to make Your name known, to live in such a way that others see Your love in us and are drawn to You.

And for those of us who bear the name of Christ, may we never take lightly the sacrifice He made for us. May we live as those who have been sanctified by the Truth, sent into the world not to conform to it, but to transform it by the power of Your Spirit. May we walk in holiness, in obedience, and in love, that Your name would be glorified in all we do.

We ask all these things in the mighty name of Jesus, the name above every name, the name by which we are saved and through which we have access to You. Amen.

May the Lord bless you and keep you; may He make His face shine upon you and be gracious to you; may He lift up His countenance upon you and give you peace (Numbers 6:24-26). Go forth in the joy of the Lord, sanctified by His Word, and united in His love.

The prayer of our great High Priest rises before us, and what depths of comfort and solemn charge it contains. He speaks of a joy fulfilled, His own joy, placed within those who are His. This is not the froth of carnal excitement, nor a happiness dependent on the world’s favour, for He immediately links it to this stark truth: “I have given them Your Word and the world has hated them.” Mark that well. The world's hatred is the shadow that attends the substance of divine joy. If you would have Christ's joy fulfilled in you, expect no friendship from a world that crucified Him. The joy He gives is a deep, abiding wellspring in a reconciled soul, a joy in God Himself, through our Lord Jesus Christ. It is the joy of one who has received the atonement, who stands still and receives salvation as a matter of free grace, and so finds his highest delight not in circumstances, but in the blessed God of peace.

You cry for sanctification, to be kept from the evil one and cleansed by the Word. And here is the key that unlocks that door: Truth. “Sanctify them by the Truth; Your Word is Truth.” It is not by frames and feelings, nor by rites and resolutions, but by a believing, growing knowledge of the Truth of God. This Truth is a vast continent, the whole testimony of God concerning His Son. Chiefly, it is the knowledge of the precious doctrine of substitution, that Christ stood in the sinner’s stead, that the transgression of His people was laid upon Him. A man is never so separated from the world and unto God as when he drinks in that soul-humbling, Christ-exalting verity. It needs the same power to make us holy that it needed to raise the dead body of our Savior from the tomb. Cry to the God of Peace, who brought again from the dead our Lord Jesus, that great Shepherd of the sheep, to work in you that which is well-pleasing in His sight. The more Truth you believe, the more sanctified you will be.

You plead for unity, that the world may believe and know the Father’s love. O for grace to grasp this! Our Lord’s prayer was not for an outward coalition of denominations, as if ### or any other society as such were a part of Christ’s true body. No, Christ’s body is made up of saints chosen of God from before the foundation of the world, redeemed by blood, called by His Spirit, and made one with Jesus. Where the Spirit of God is, there must be love. If I have recognized any man to be my brother in Christ Jesus, the love of Christ constrains me to think of him as a fellow citizen with the saints. This is the unity we must chase after, a spiritual oneness in the life of Christ, “I in them and You in Me.” We must aid each other in every holy enterprise, and chase out of our hearts everything that would break the unity which God has established.

And what is the great end of all this? That the world may know the Father’s name and His love. “I have made Your Name known to them and will continue to make it known, so that the love You have for Me may be in them, and I in them.” Here is the summit of it all. The love of God, that mighty passion of the Eternal heart, shed abroad in us by the Holy Ghost, so that we are filled with the very love He bears His Son. Do not merely talk of this love, or sing of it; seek to enter into it. No man rejoices in God except the man who receives the atonement by Jesus Christ and sees God reconciled upon the throne with the covenant rainbow round about Him. That sight alters everything, and lifts a soul from its crookedness to walk among the upright. Trust in the atoning sacrifice, and you shall be assured of that great love wherewith He has loved you, a love that never had a beginning and shall never know an end.

You seek the very things for which our Lord interceded, a prayer not of request only but of revelation. His joy, His sanctification, His unity, these are the inheritance of those who are not of the world. But mark this carefully: the world hates those who have received the Word, not because they are harsh or contentious, but because the truth itself rebukes error. Our Lord did not pray that we be removed from the world, but that we be kept from the evil one while remaining in it. How then are we kept? Not by outward flight, but by the inward sanctification that comes only through the truth, and God's word is that very truth. You would have His joy fulfilled in you and His protection over you, then you must cling to the word as the lamp for your feet and the cleanser of your soul. It is no light thing to be washed by the word. It means daily cutting off every evil custom, every idle habit, every root of sin that the evil one would use for a foothold.

You long also for the unity for which Christ prayed, that we may be one as He and the Father are one. But consider what manner of union this is. It is not a mere harmony of sentiment achieved by ignoring the truth. The Church is called the Church of God, not of this or that teacher, precisely to cast down our swelling pride and unite us in one body. A body torn by schism cannot display the glory given by the Father. Where is this unity forged? In lowliness of mind. The apostle called all to be of equal honor, casting aside the mischievous disease of worldly rank. God has joined together rich and poor, bond and free, in the greater things, baptism, adoption, grace, sanctification. How preposterous then to divide over earthly trifles when we are made one in Christ. Your prayer for unity must become the practice of humility and love, for love is the fulfilling of the law. Christ said, "This is my commandment, that ye love one another as I have loved you." That very love is the bond which keeps the joy of Christ unmoved within us. It does not fail when trials come, but sees in tribulation a cause not for grief but for a deeper communion with Him who endured the cross.

The world believes that the Father sent the Son when it sees a love that is not of this world, a unity reflecting the divine life itself. This glory, this oneness, is not a future hope only but a present possession, the love of the Father dwelling in us through the Son. Do you wish the world to know? Then let them see a brotherhood so knit together in God that no wedge of envy, no love of preeminence, can force it apart. Let them see you rejoicing more in a brother's spiritual progress than in ten thousand earthly crowns. Guard against the opinion that any sin, however small it seems, is indifferent; the devil labors always to drive men to destruction through such small surrenders. But if you strive manfully, casting out the evil conceit and its offspring of wrath and covetousness, you gain a thousand battles more difficult than any fought with swords. Such is the path of those who, being not of the world, are yet sent into it, sanctified by the truth, sharing the love the Father has for the Son, so that the world may know and believe, and you may behold His glory forever. By the grace and loving kindness of our Lord Jesus Christ, to whom be glory and might, now and ever, and world without end. Amen.
