Chrysostom
Beloved of All
Your cry is heard, and your pain is real. But do not let the blast of this trial overturn you. Great vigor of soul is needed for such a violent storm, for when prosperity lifts us up or calamity crushes us, the same passion can drown us. Yet here is the anchor: Faith delivers when we fall into perplexity, even when escape seems impossible. Remember the Israelites trapped between the sea and the army, there was no way out, but God made a path through the waters and saved them from sheer impossibility.
Do not despair of God’s lovingkindness. The throne of grace is still set, and this is the accepted time, the day of salvation. Come boldly to it in your need, not with an evil conscience that doubts, but trusting that He gives grace for help in due season. While we live, the Judge still sits to pardon; He rises to judgment only later. So now, while breath remains, flee to Him with your whole heart.
I know the waves of business and sorrow can overwhelm even great souls, yet comfort comes from the trials of the faithful and the promise of life in Christ Jesus. He does not leave those who trust Him. Hold fast. What you cannot carry, lay down before Him. You are not unarmed and compassed about without aid; the sea that threatens to engulf you may yet become solid ground under His command. Cry to Him, not as one without hope, but as a child running to a Father’s mercy. He is the Friend of man, but do not deceive yourself: He saves those who turn to Him with true faith, not presumptuous claims. Your present desperation is a door: knock, and grace will answer in this time of need.
