Chrysostom
Beloved of All
The heaviness of soul you describe is not from God, for He is not the author of confusion but of peace. When the heart clings to any creature with a passion that rivals or confuses the bond of marriage, it invites this very torment. The marriage bed is honorable, a union of one flesh that no man should rend asunder, yet you speak of another man as a “twin flame,” a phrase that has no root in Holy Scripture but belongs to the delusions of the world. That intense ache you feel for him is not innocent compassion; it is a fire that consumes your inner peace and anger against yourself is the natural fruit of a divided heart. Repent of this entanglement. Fling it away as you would a serpent. Marriage is a bond ordained of God; a harlot is a severing and a dissolving, and any affection that intrudes upon the covenant with your own husband is a spiritual severance, no matter how veiled in sympathy.
Your anguish for the sick is not wrong; even the Lord wept. But examine your sorrow: is it pure, or has it mingled with an attachment you dare not name? The enemy uses our legitimate grief to plant seeds of disorder. For this reason the Apostle bids us follow peace with all men, and holiness, without which no man shall see the Lord. Holiness in marriage means keeping your heart solely for your husband, not splitting it with another’s voice or memory. The ringing in your ears and the heaviness in your body may well be the cries of a soul starved of that single-eyed devotion. Yet there is mercy. Make no provision for the flesh, to fulfil its lusts. Cease messaging that man. Do not attend the performance tonight, for to stand and hear that voice which kindles a false flame would be to heap sin upon sorrow. Rather, go before the Lord in sackcloth and tears, and confess, “I have let a stranger into the garden of my heart.”
Turn then to your husband, for he is your true companion in the flesh, given you by God. Pray together. Use marriage with moderation, not as an idol but as a means to holiness, and you shall find the peace that surpasses understanding. The Apostle says, a brother is not under bondage in such cases, but you are under bondage to Christ, and He demands a whole heart. If your husband is difficult, let your chaste and respectful behavior win him without a word. Your anxiety and depression will lift as you stop nourishing a divided affection. Pour out your care for the sick into intercession, but with hands cleansed from all inward defilement. The Church is wedded to Christ, and every faithful soul is called to that spiritual marriage where alone the deepest longing is satisfied. He who is joined unto the Lord is one spirit.
Flee, then, from the broad way that leads to destruction. The Lord is near to the brokenhearted, but the brokenhearted who cling to fragments of sin find no healing. Cut off the wrong attachment, and you will breathe again. I speak sharply because I love you, and I would not have you cast away with the wicked. Rise up, woman, and set your house in order. Your husband, your marriage, your own health, all can be restored as you fix your gaze on Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith, who for the joy set before Him endured the cross. Do not despise the chastening of the Lord, for whom the Lord loves He reproves. Go, and sin no more, and the peace of God which passes all understanding shall keep your heart and mind in Christ Jesus.
