Heavy is the burden laid upon your heart, yet what a mercy that you bring it to the throne of grace. For your dear mother, afflicted in her lungs with a fungal infection alongside her diabetes, and for your father, beset by so many ills, his eyesight dimming, his head throbbing with pain, his frame swollen and his blood pressure unruly, here is a call to the sweetest prayer God ever hears. Intercessory prayer is the very breath of Christ Himself, and it has stayed plagues and raised the dead. Do not doubt its power, for the prayer of faith works wonders. We are permitted to open our mouth before the Lord for the sick and for the tried, with the sure promise that whatever we ask in prayer, believing, we shall receive.
Cry to the Great Physician, not as one who summons a doctor for His own gain, but as a soul that knows its need of Him. He sends His Word to heal, and Christ Himself is that Word, given for the healing of poor sin-sick souls. Let your prayer be full of importunity, that earnest wrestling which cuts a channel through the rock. Agonize with the Apostle, who besought the brethren to strive together with him in prayer. For your mother’s breath and your father’s feet, for the headache and urinary troubles, plead as the vessel that will not let go until the blessing comes. This is no time for cold, formal petitions; it is the hour for prayer with force, with energy, with humble boldness.
Take hold of that handy, universal cry: “Lord, help me!” It is a prayer for those under great strain, a prayer for the difficult sphere, a prayer that will do to die with. Pour it out before Him who knows all your parents’ needs, even as He knew Peter’s and prayed for him before the temptation came. And as you plead, do not forget your own soul. Are you broken on account of sin? The Lord heals the broken in heart and binds up their wounds. If you feel unworthy even to bend the knee, be of good cheer; a true prayer from one near the gates of death is a prevailing prayer. Bring yourself with your parents, as one with them in need of mercy.
Let this trial knit your heart to your brothers and sisters in the faith, for you cannot pray well for those you know nothing about. Share this burden in the assembly, that many may cause the face of God to shine upon His sanctuary for your father and mother. Prayer is, after all, the chief matter. Will You not revive them, O Lord? Will You not stretch out Your hand and let health spring forth? I am persuaded that if you seize the promises with a firm grip and plead the precious blood of Jesus, you shall see the deliverance of the Lord.
