You have laid your request before the throne of grace, and it is heard. For He that keeps Israel neither slumbers nor sleeps, and the very hosts of heaven encamp around those who fear Him. Do not imagine that your son wrestles alone in the night watches. If Christ our Master could sleep upon a pillow in the midst of the storm, and yet command the winds and waves to be still, how much more can His peace stand guard over the mind of one beloved by you and offered daily into His care?
Yet understand this: the sleep of the body is a good gift, but the torment of dark dreams is no ordinary drowsiness. It is the clinging shadow of past affliction, a drunkenness not of wine but of worldly sorrow and fear. And such drunkenness must be driven out not by our own strength, but by a sober and watchful faith. The soul that fixes its gaze upon things unseen, upon the resurrection glory that awaits all who are in Christ, can say to these terrors, “Why are you cast down, O my soul?” For the dead shall rise in Christ, and we shall be caught up in clouds to be ever with the Lord. Every child who sleeps in Him does not perish but rests, awaiting that bountiful dealing.
Therefore, do not merely ask for quiet slumber. Ask, and strive, that your son’s conscience may be anchored in the sure hope that nothing can separate him from the love of God. A pure conscience, testifying that we belong to Christ, is a better shield than a legion of angels, though angels indeed are sent to minister. But the angels guard most closely those whose minds are stayed on the heavenly country. Fill his waking moments with the promises of Scripture; let him hear that his sufferings, endured with patience, are working for him an eternal weight of glory. In this, your own comfort will become his comfort, for as you share in tribulation, so you share in the consolation of Christ.
The evil one shoots his arrows in the darkness, but the daybreak of the Lord dispels every phantom. Say to your son: “Lie down and sleep in peace, for the Lord alone makes you dwell in safety. Your foot shall not be moved if you do not suffer it to be moved. The night of wickedness is a choice; choose rather the sober day of faith.” And you, who watch on his behalf, let your prayer rise as incense, confident that the Father who gave His own Son will not withhold any good thing. The child for whom you pray is not outside the fold, if he hears the Shepherd’s voice. Wait upon the Lord, and in a little while you shall see His deliverance, and you shall not need to ask how or when. For the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will garrison his heart and mind in Christ Jesus, and the dreams of terror shall be turned into the quiet rest of the beloved disciple who leaned on Jesus’ breast. Stand steadfast, unmoveable, and let this affliction become for you both a crown and a testimony.
