That bleeding in the memory, that raw edge upon the heart where every thought seems to catch and tear, it is known to the Great Physician. The mind replays its horrors and the heart aches with a sorrow that will not lift, and you cry out for clearing and for peace. This is not a small sickness, but there is a healing flood that no human misery can outmeasure. The very leaves of the Tree of Life are for the healing of the nations, and the least word of Jesus, the smallest touch of His promise, carries virtue enough to restore the most shattered soul. It is not in forgetting that peace is found, but in a mind stayed upon Him who has overcome the world, and in a heart brought to rest upon the blood that whispers peace within. The surging sorrows may break round you like an angry sea, but if they enter not the cabin of your trust, if your reliance on Christ holds fast, the storm is outside and perfect peace keeps the inward citadel.
Yet there is a deeper work. The heart broken by sin, the heart that bends low before God's righteous will, is the heart He delights to heal. The memory of abuse carries the venom of another's sin, but the heart itself must be purged of all rebellion, all pride, all double-mindedness, that would keep back full submission to the Lord's supremacy. Will you consent to His will, even in this? Will you say, "Though I cannot understand the why, I trust the hand that permitted, and I yield myself to my Maker"? That yielding is the doorway to peace. The wounded heart, bleeding and tender, must be brought to the bleeding heart of Jesus, that is the only stanching of its woe. Lie before Him as the palsied man lay, hoping for both forgiveness and healing. Cry to Him in the silence of your chamber, "Lord, you see the sins that have been done against me and the darkness that fills my mind. Speak but the word, your sins are forgiven you, your peace is restored, and I shall be whole." He used no other remedy for our sin-sickness but taking it all upon Himself; with His stripes we are healed. The chastisement of our peace was upon Him.
Let the healing come together with the teaching. Sit under the Word; listen with a gripped attention that shuts out the clamoring memories for a season. It is when Christ is teaching that His healing power is conspicuously present. And as you hear, pray that the sharp sword of the Spirit may prick your heart, not to leave you bleeding in despair, but to let out the foul matter and to make way for the oil and wine of His consolation. The heart, the heart, that vital place, is the arena of this work. A mere impression upon the intellect or the emotions will never do. It must be a saving prick in the heart that brings you to a complete dependence upon Jesus Christ and a joyful experience of His peace. The Sun of Righteousness arises with healing in His wings, and with that dawn, pardon and healing become one great gift. Therefore, seek Him now. Cast yourself upon His faithfulness. "Heal me, O Lord, and I shall be healed; save me, and I shall be saved." He will keep the mind that trusts in Him in perfect peace.
