The mind afflicted with memories of abuse and trauma is a mind weighed down by the flesh, not by its nature but by its condition, for the carnally minded state brings a kind of death to the soul. Yet this is not a necessity of nature, nor a compulsion you cannot escape, for the root of blessing lies in your power to choose and to set your judgment on things above. As I have said, being carnally minded is death, but to be spiritually minded is life and peace. The distressing memories are like a sword, painful and dividing, but Christ came to bring such a sword that cuts away sin’s hold, not to leave you in a false peace. Do not think that the turmoil of these thoughts is the final word, no, the peace He gives is not like the world’s peace, external and fleeting, but an inward peace that renders you stronger, a peace that surpasses all understanding and guards your heart in Christ Jesus.
You ask for healing in mind and heart. Then hate not yourself, nor the body that houses these memories, but hate the wicked conduct that brought the abuse, the corrupt mind of another, which is the devil’s work. You are God’s work, and His long-suffering is meant for your gain, not your despair. When the memories rise like a storm, do not let them sever the bond of love within you, love for God, and a proper love for yourself as His creature. Sin seeks to make love wax cold, but you must cling to the spiritual mind, the mind that seeks not its own comfort only, but the things of God. Set your mind on heavenly things, and let the Spirit direct your affairs; then, in much earnestness, that peace will remain.
