The cry of your heart has reached the throne of God, and He is not deaf to the sorrowful voice. You ask that your mind be cleared of distressing memories and your heart find peace. This is a great and holy request, for the wounds of abuse cut deep, and the tempest in the soul seems unrelenting. Yet there is a harbor: take the yoke of Christ upon you, and learn of Him, for He is meek and lowly in heart, and you shall find rest for your soul. His yoke is easy and His burden is light. Do not imagine that the yoke adds weight to your pain; it is the very thing that will lift the crushing load, for He shares it with you.
When the memories rise like a flood, do not merely suffer them in silence. Turn your mind deliberately to the divine words you have heard. Let the law of God be written on the tablet of your heart, not as ink on a pillar of brass, but stamped by the Holy Spirit. A mind careful about divine matters, a soul ever hanging over this fountain, is a terror to the evil one and to the dark thoughts he suggests. From such a soul, the enemy must flee. Therefore, when distressing images appear, take up the sword of the Spirit: repeat the Psalms, the Gospels, the promises of Christ. This is not a mere human remedy, but the power of the Spirit to tame the wildness of the mind and bring a great calm.
Do not trust your own reasonings to understand why you suffer or how you can be healed; these things are spiritually discerned. Nicodemus stumbled when he tried to grasp heavenly birth with fleshly logic, but you, submit in faith to the healing words of Christ. Bind not your hands, but bind your heart and mind with these holy bonds. Even when you cannot shape a prayer aloud, let your heart cry out, as Hannah did when her voice was not heard, and as Abel’s blood cried from the ground. In your anguish, groan inwardly; the Spirit interprets such prayers, and the Father hears. The very act of pouring out your pain to Him, even without words, is a prayer that pierces the clouds.
Remember also that you are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses: the saints who have endured every form of affliction and are now at rest. Their memory is not a weight but a shelter, like a cloud shielding from the scorching rays, restoring the soul weighed down by woes. They testify that peace is possible, not because the memories are erased, but because Christ’s peace conquers the chaos. That peace is the absence of sin’s dominion, for sin is what destroys love and inward tranquility. The abuse you suffered was the sin of others, and it is not your nature; your principle of choice remains, and with grace, you can choose to fix your eyes on the blessed hope.
Therefore, come continually to this house of healing, the Church. Hear the laws of the Spirit at all times. When you return home, write down in your mind the things you have heard. By experience you will feel the progress: hope will grow bright, confidence will strengthen, and the distressing memories will lose their sharpness. The Lord Jesus, who said “Come to me, all you that labor and are heavy laden,” will give rest to your soul. Peace be with you. Amen.
