hard times

Beloved of All
Yesterday I had a fair hearing where the judge asked me what my rent is. IWhen I started stating that my legal rent is a lower amount the judge cut me off and said we're not here for that what is your rent amount and i said the higher wrong number that the landlord is billing me. I have no lawyer and do not know what to do now. The judge said that the case is going back to the agency and the judge did not see that the agency did review my paperwork. So i may get in trouble for saying the higher amount but i did say it's what the landlord is currently billing me. I just hate my life right now.

We have heard your heart in this hard season and we are carrying this burden with you before the Lord in Jesus name. We understand how distressing it must have been to be cut off by the judge when you were trying to tell the truth about your legal rent, and then to feel trapped into saying the higher amount that the landlord is billing you, and now to be anxious about getting in trouble and facing the agency review again without a lawyer. We also hear the deep discouragement in your words when you say you hate your life right now, and we want to gently lift you up and speak truth and hope over you.

We want to remind you that your life is precious to God and He has purpose for you even in this painful and confusing moment. The Lord is near to those who are brokenhearted, Psalm 34:18, and He sees exactly what happened in that hearing when you were not allowed to fully explain. He is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble, Psalm 46:1, and He invites you to cast all your worries on Him because He cares for you, 1 Peter 5:7. We rebuke the despair and the hatred toward your own life, because God created you with love and He has plans for you, plans for peace and not for evil, to give you hope and a future, Jeremiah 29:11. We encourage you not to let this one difficult hearing define your worth or your future, for we know that all things work together for good for those who love God, Romans 8:28, even when circumstances feel unjust.

We also want to speak about truth, because God delights in honesty. Lying lips are an abomination to the Lord, but those who do truthfully are His delight, Proverbs 12:22, and you shall not give false testimony, Exodus 20:16. We hear that you did try to tell the truth about your legal rent and you clarified that the higher amount is what the landlord is currently billing you, so we do not believe you intended to deceive. Yet because the record now shows the higher number, we strongly encourage you to correct the record quickly and clearly in a way that honors truth. Since the judge is sending the case back to the agency and noted the agency had not reviewed your paperwork, this is actually an opportunity to make sure the truth is fully seen. We encourage you to promptly write a clear, calm, dated letter to the agency explaining that you were cut off when trying to state your legal rent, that the higher amount you stated is only what the landlord is billing you and is not the legal rent, and that your true legal rent is the lower amount with documentation attached. Keep copies of everything, attach your lease, rent bills, and any prior paperwork that shows the correct amount, and keep a copy of your letter. We also encourage you to seek help right away even without money for a lawyer, by contacting local legal aid, a tenant help clinic, housing court help center, or a trusted community advocate who can review your papers and help you submit a correction or affidavit. Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God, and the peace of God which surpasses all understanding will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus, Philippians 4:6-7.

We notice your request did not mention the name of Jesus, and we want to lovingly share that it is only through Jesus that we have access to God and peace with Him. Jesus said, I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me, John 14:6, and there is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven that is given among men by which we must be saved, Acts 4:12. If you have not already, we encourage you to put your trust in Jesus Christ, believing that He died for your sins and rose again, and to call upon His name for salvation and for help in every trouble.

We are praying together with you now.

We pray, Father in heaven, in the name of Jesus Christ we come before You for this dear one who is weary and anxious. Lord, You saw that hearing, You heard the interruption, You know the true legal rent and the burden of being billed the higher amount, and You know the fear of being misunderstood. We ask You to bring Your perfect peace to this troubled heart and to remove thoughts of hating life and replace them with hope in Your love and purpose. Forgive any misstatement and help this dear one to walk in complete truth with a clear conscience before You and before the agency. We ask You to give favor with the agency reviewers, that they would truly review the paperwork this time with care and fairness, and that the correct rent amount would be recognized. Provide wise help, whether a legal aid attorney, counselor, or advocate, and provide for every rent and daily need according to Your riches. Guard this heart and mind in Christ Jesus, strengthen faith, and let Your will be done in this case for good. We ask all this in the saving and powerful name of Jesus, our only hope and mediator, amen.

We were sorry to read about your hearing and how unsettling that moment must have been. Being cut off when you were trying to explain the difference between your legal rent and what the landlord is billing would leave anyone feeling anxious and discouraged, especially without a lawyer beside you. It makes sense you are carrying that worry now and feeling low.

We hear that you tried to answer honestly under pressure by saying the higher amount is what you are currently being billed, even though you wanted to explain the lower legal rent. The judge sending the case back to the agency because your paperwork had not been reviewed may actually give you a clear opportunity to put that explanation in writing.

A couple of steady next steps that might help you regain some footing:

While it is fresh, write down exactly what was asked and what you answered, with the date of the hearing. Keep it brief and factual. Then prepare a short written clarification for the agency stating both numbers plainly, that the legal rent is the lower amount and the higher amount is what the landlord has been billing, and attach copies of the paperwork showing the legal rent. Keep copies of everything you send. If you can, reach out soon to a local legal aid office or tenant help center for free guidance on how to submit that clarification properly, we are not attorneys and they can advise you best on the process.

Father, we lift this dear one to You who sees the details and the stress of this situation. Bring calm, clear next steps, and trustworthy help, and remind them they are not alone. Give wisdom to those reviewing the case and peace for the days ahead. In Jesus name, amen.

It is a painful thing to stand alone before those who have power over your dwelling and to feel that your own tongue has been made to speak against your interest. To be cut off when you would speak the plain truth, and then to be left fearing that you will be counted false, is indeed a sore trial, and I do not wonder that your heart sinks within you and you say you hate your life.

Yet hear the word of the Lord for such an hour as this. It is even the time of Jacob's trouble, but he shall be saved out of it. Jacob knew what it was to be pressed on every side till he feared he should be destroyed, he and his house, and still the Lord delivered him. Your trouble is real, but it is not beyond the reach of Him who has said, Fear not, thou worm Jacob, and ye men of Israel, I will help thee, saith the Lord, and thy Redeemer, the Holy One of Israel. The fear of man bringeth a snare, and when a judge speaks sharply it is natural to tremble, but we must labour to get rid of fear which dishonors God and weakens the hands. Perfect love toward Him who judges righteously casts out that tormenting fear.

You must not give way to despair, for despair is an unwarrantable thing and a sin against the God of Hope. It says in the heart that there is no help in God, and it tramples upon the blood of Christ which was shed for sinners such as we are. To say I hate my life is to speak as one without hope, and you are not without hope while Christ lives to intercede. Draw near to God, and He will draw near to you. That is His own promise. If you are willing to find Him you will see traces of His wisdom and mercy even in this wilderness of trouble. He, and not the powers of darkness that would tempt you to lie down in darkness, is your help.

What then shall you do in this practical strait. First, seek the Lord in prayer with a true heart, confessing your anxiety and asking for wisdom to walk in truth. There are sins of omission as well as sins of commission, and the loving fear which every child has toward his Father makes him watch his every footstep lest he deviate from absolute obedience. If you spoke the higher amount only because you were interrupted and you made plain that it is what the landlord is billing you, you have not yet spoken falsely in heart, but you must now make the truth plain upon the record. While the case is going back to the agency, there is yet opportunity to correct what was hastily said. Write down in clear order what your legal rent truly is, gather the papers which prove it, and send a brief and respectful correction to the agency and to the clerk of the court, stating that you were cut off and wish the record to show the lawful amount and the amount presently billed. Keep copies of all that you send. And because you are without counsel, seek at once such help as is freely given to those in need, a legal aid society, a tenant help clinic, or a trusted adviser in your city who may look over your papers. I do not speak as a lawyer, but as one who would have you do what is honest and orderly in the sight of all men.

Wear the flower called heart's ease in your bosom. Have that little bird there that sings sweetly of the love of God, for others who see you in this condition will judge whether there is power in religion to comfort in trouble. Be not of an anxious or doubtful mind concerning temporal things. Your heavenly Father knows your need of daily bread and a roof over your head, and He will provide as He sees best.

May the Lord graciously keep you from both forms of evil, from speaking untruth and from despairing of His mercy. May He give you a calm mind, a clear word, and friends to stand with you, and may He bring you to see that Christ alone is our salvation and our peace. Cast your burden upon Him now, and stand still and see the salvation of God.

May God in Jesus' name answer your prayer request according to God's perfect love, wisdom, will, timing, grace, and mercy. God is so in love with you. Be Encouraged!
