Your soul cries out from the verses of the Psalmist, and rightly so, for the Lord is indeed your light and salvation. When the wicked advance and armies besiege, what is left but to dwell in the house of the Lord all your days? That one thing you seek is the very anchor of every storm. Yet I see in your prayer a heart tossed between faith and the weariness of constant attacks. You ask for deliverance, peace, rest, and for God to rebuke the evil. Do not mistake the shape of His answer. He often delivers not by removing the trial, but by making you unshaken within it. As the Apostle said, He delivered me from the lion’s mouth, and He will deliver me from every evil work. That second deliverance is greater: preservation of the soul from sin while in the very jaws of danger. So be confident that you shall see the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living, not only in the life to come, but here, now, by eyes of faith.

But consider this: you ask for peace and rest, yet are you making peace within your own heart toward those who bring the attack? Nothing so much delights God as to remember no evil. When evil men speak against you, do not let your tongue spit back venom; that only pollutes your own soul. The Scriptures say, Him that privily speaketh against his neighbor, this man did I chase out. So instead of joining the battle of words, answer evil with blessings. Imitate the Master, who when reviled, reviled not again. This is not weakness; it is the power that overcomes sages and rhetoricians. The devil, that ruler of darkness, seeks to suffocate your soul with the smoke of contention. Do not let grief make you drunk; sing rather those very Psalms you bring: Return unto thy rest, O my soul, for the Lord hath dealt bountifully with thee. Let that melody calm the raging of your mind.

As for the heat wave and the safety of those you name, it is right to ask, but do not cling to these as though your peace depended on a change of weather or an uneventful journey. He who made the lion of ferocious government a tool for Paul’s deliverance can guard them in the midst of danger. Entrust them to His keeping without anxiety, knowing that even the hairs of their head are numbered.

You pray also for forgiveness and to stay on the right track. That is the wise request of a watchful soul. The evil one, who set the trap for Judas, does not show the snare until the sin is complete, so be not overconfident. Let your prayer be constant, your repentance daily. Do not think you must flee every conflict; sometimes a good division is necessary, separating from those united for evil. But with all men, as much as lies in you, live peaceably. In the day of trouble He will hide you in the shelter of His sacred tent, and there, when your enemies still surround you, you will sacrifice with shouts of joy. Not because they are gone, but because He is there. Wait for the Lord; be strong, take heart, and wait.

Your prayer has been anchored in Psalm 27, and that is a sure place to stand. The Lord is your light and your salvation, the stronghold of your life. Even if a whole army encamps against you, your heart does not need to fear. What you are facing, these constant evil attacks, feels like a war waged against your soul, but the confidence you expressed in those verses is exactly what will carry you: you will see the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living.

You have asked for deliverance, rest, peace, and wisdom. These requests are all wound together in the heart of God. There is no true wisdom that does not begin with the fear of the Lord, and the fear of the Lord is to hate evil. That may sound strong, but it is the first real step toward lasting peace. Evil will always angle for your tolerance. It will whisper that you can compromise just a little and still be safe. Yet fellowship with God means learning to despise what He despises, pride, arrogance, the perverse mouth, the evil way. When you pray for God to rebuke and remove the evil around you, that hatred of evil is already at work within you, and that is a mark of His grace.

But the wisdom that comes from God does more than just hate evil. It brings you into a peace that the world cannot manufacture. Worldly wisdom produces strife, confusion, and every evil work. Godly wisdom is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, easily entreated. It does not need to be loud or combative. So as you seek clarity and wisdom, do not be surprised if the answer leads you first to quiet your own soul. The mind that is stayed on Him is kept in perfect, unshakeable peace. That peace is not the absence of trouble; it is the presence of full dependence.

You mentioned deep weariness and a longing for rest. Real rest is impossible outside of faith, not faith in your own efforts, your own ability to figure things out, or your own strength to withstand the attacks. The only rest that will hold you is found when you abandon yourself completely to God. A total commitment to His keeping is the doorway into complete rest, because at that point you are no longer trying to be your own deliverer. He is able to do what you cannot do for yourself. You are not perfect, and you do not have to be; you are on the way, and He is at work even when you feel overwhelmed.

There is a striking picture Scripture gives of the wicked: they are like a troubled sea that cannot rest, constantly churning up mire and dirt. There is no peace for the one who remains in rebellion or tries to manage evil in his own strength. But to the one who turns to the Lord, the offer is peace, deep, healing peace. The righteous enter into peace; they rest in their beds, shielded from the evil to come. That war you have felt inside, that turmoil, is what Jesus came to end. Through the forgiveness of your sins, the conflict is over. You are no longer running. So when you ask for forgiveness and a firm track according to His will, you are positioning yourself right where the peace of God can flood in.

Be watchful, however, not to envy those who seem to flourish while walking in evil, nor to sit too long at their table. The company we keep and the counsel we absorb matter. There are those whose hearts study destruction, and their deceitful bread will only leave you hollow. True riches are found in wisdom and understanding, which are better than rubies. Let your life demonstrate a different wisdom, pure, merciful, a life that sows peace and reaps a harvest of righteousness.

I join you in asking for relief from this heat wave and in committing those you love to His safe keeping on the road and in all their comings and goings. And I commend you to the One who hides you in the shelter of His sacred tent and sets you high upon a rock. Keep seeking His face, as your heart has already urged. He will teach you His way and lead you on a straight path because of those who oppress you. He will not forsake you. Wait for the Lord. Be strong, take heart, and wait for Him.
