We hear your heart’s longing and lift it before the Lord, who alone knows the deepest desires of our souls. Your prayer reflects a sincere hope for love, family, and a future built on faith, and we join you in seeking God’s perfect will in this matter. The Scriptures remind us, "Delight yourself in the Lord, and he will give you the desires of your heart" (Psalm 37:4 WEB). Yet we must also remember that His ways are higher than ours, and His timing is perfect, even when it differs from our own.
First, we want to affirm the importance of seeking God’s will above all else in relationships. Marriage is a sacred covenant designed by God to reflect Christ’s love for the Church (Ephesians 5:22-33 WEB). It is honorable and good to desire a godly spouse who will love, cherish, and lead with wisdom. However, we must also guard our hearts against placing our hope in a person rather than in the Lord. "The heart is deceitful above all things, and it is exceedingly corrupt: who can know it?" (Jeremiah 17:9 WEB). Even the most well-intentioned desires can become idols if we allow them to consume our focus more than our relationship with God.
We notice in your prayer a strong emphasis on what you hope this man will feel, say, and do, declaring his love, seeing your value, and stepping into the role of a provider and stepfather. While these are natural desires, we must gently remind you that true love is not something we can manipulate or manufacture, even through prayer. God works in hearts in His own way and time. Instead of praying for him to feel a certain way, we encourage you to pray for God’s will to be done in both of your lives. "This is the confidence which we have toward him, that if we ask anything according to his will, he listens to us" (1 John 5:14 WEB). Trust that if this relationship is of God, He will bring it to fruition in a way that honors Him and fulfills His purposes for you both.
We also want to address the importance of purity and patience in this season. The Bible is clear that sexual intimacy is reserved for marriage (Hebrews 13:4 WEB). If this relationship is moving toward physical or emotional intimacy outside of marriage, we must rebuke that in the name of Jesus and encourage you to set boundaries that honor God. "Flee sexual immorality! ‘Every sin that a man does is outside the body,’ but he who commits sexual immorality sins against his own body" (1 Corinthians 6:18 WEB). This includes guarding your heart against emotional dependency that can lead to sin or disappointment.
Your desire for marriage and a united family is beautiful and aligns with God’s design, but we must also caution against putting your life on hold while waiting for this relationship to progress. Continue to seek the Lord, serve Him, and live fully in the calling He has for you now. "For I know the plans I have for you,” says the Lord, “plans for peace, and not for evil, to give you hope and a future" (Jeremiah 29:11 WEB). Whether this man is part of that future or not, God has a plan for you and your boys.
Let us pray together:
Heavenly Father, we come before You with humble hearts, seeking Your will above all else. Lord, we lift up this sister to You, asking that You would draw her closer to Your heart and fill her with Your peace. Father, we pray for clarity and wisdom in this relationship. If it is Your will for her and this man to walk together in marriage, we ask that You would prepare both of their hearts, align their paths, and bring them together in a way that glorifies You. If this is not Your plan, we ask that You would gently close the door and lead her into the future You have prepared for her.
Lord, we pray for this man’s heart. Soften it to Your leading, and if it is Your will, let him see the value in this sister as a woman of God. Shape him into a man after Your own heart, a provider, a protector, and a leader who loves You above all else. Guard both of their hearts from impatience, from idolatry, and from any temptation that would lead them away from Your best.
Father, we also lift up her boys to You. You know their needs, their fears, and their hopes. We ask that You would surround them with Your love and prepare their hearts for whatever Your plan holds. If this man is to become a stepfather to them, we pray that You would knit their hearts together in love and trust.
Lord, we trust You with the desires of her heart. Whether You choose to fulfill them in this way or another, we know that Your plans are good. Help her to wait on You with hope, to walk in purity, and to find her ultimate satisfaction in You alone. Let her heart echo the words of the psalmist: "Whom have I in heaven but you? There is nothing on earth that I desire besides you" (Psalm 73:25 WEB).
We ask all of this in the mighty name of Jesus, the name above every name, the only name by which we can approach You and be saved. May Your will be done in this situation, and may Your name be glorified. Amen.
