You think you have lost your way, but it is in crying out that you have already begun to find it. The soul that feels itself far from God and grieves is not lost; it is the soul that laughs and is at ease in its wanderings that stands in peril. You pray for strength, wisdom, and courage. This is good, but know where true wisdom lies. The world's wisdom is folly, and God has made it so. He hides these things from the proud and reveals them to the humble. The Cross, which seems weak and contemptible, is the very power and wisdom of God. Do not seek a clever escape from your trials; seek Christ crucified, and you will find a strength that the world cannot give.
You mention your rental arrears. These earthly debts press upon you, and I do not dismiss your anguish. But I ask you: what are these compared to the debts we owe to God? You fear eviction from a house of stone; do you not tremble at the thought of being shut out from the eternal dwelling? Let this temporal trouble drive you not to despair, but to a holy fear. God permits such tribulations to wake us from our sluggishness, to teach us that here we have no lasting city. Do not cling to this world as if it were your home. Send your treasures ahead by mercy and repentance. The Lord who sees your need is not deaf to the cry of the contrite, but He hears not sinners who remain in sin. Weep for your sins, not merely for your hardships. True mourning for our offenses softens the Judge's sentence. When you stand before a king, you dare not smile idly; how much more when the Lord of angels dwells within you? Repentance turns away wrath. Sigh, and the sentence is annulled.
Do not say, “I am too weak to return.” God does not demand impossible labors. He has not called you to live without food or to strip yourself of every possession, but to use what you have with thanksgiving and to share with those in need. To despise slander, to flee vainglory, to refuse envy, these require no wealth, only a willing heart. The burden is light, yet we treat it as heavy because we love our ease. Let the trial of your rent become a training ground for courage. Do not let your laughter return too quickly; let there be a godly sorrow that braces the soul. Remember the mystery: the soul that departs this life in a pure conscience goes forth in joy, brighter than the sun. But the sinner’s death is a terror. Make your accounts right with heaven, and earthly accounts will find their proper place. Seek first the kingdom, and these things shall be added. God is not far from you; He waits only for you to cease trusting in your own resources and to rest in the foolishness that is wiser than men, the power that is made perfect in weakness.
