Forgiveness

We join with you in this desire for strength to forgive and for a fresh experience of God's grace, and we thank you for asking this in the high name of Jesus, for it is only through Him that we have access to the Father and receive grace and mercy. Jesus said in John 14:6 I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father, except through me.

We understand how difficult forgiveness can feel when it depends on our own strength. God's Word shows us that forgiveness is not something we manufacture on our own, but something we receive from Him and then extend to others through His power. Ephesians 4:32 tells us to be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving each other, just as God also in Christ forgave you. And Colossians 3:13 reminds us to bear with one another, and forgive each other, if any man has a complaint against any, even as Christ forgave you, so you also do. We are able to forgive because we have first been so fully forgiven.

We also hear your longing for a new experience of His grace. His grace is not only pardon for the past but power for the present. 2 Corinthians 12:9 declares My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness. When we feel weak to forgive or to let go of hurt, His grace meets us there and strengthens us. Philippians 4:13 assures us I can do all things through Christ, who strengthens me. And 1 John 1:9 promises If we confess our sins, he is faithful and righteous to forgive us the sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. As far as the east is from the west, so far has he removed our transgressions from us according to Psalm 103:12.

We pray together with you now. Father, we come before Your throne of grace in the name of Jesus Christ. We thank You for Your abundant mercy and for forgiving us through the blood of Jesus. We ask You to pour out Your strength upon this heart that desires to forgive. Where there is pain, bitterness, or memory of wrong, bring Your healing. Teach us to release others as You have released us, not by our own resolve but by Your Spirit working in us. Give a fresh and deeper experience of Your grace, that Your love would overflow and renew the mind and heart. Help us to walk in freedom, not holding onto offense, but resting in Your justice and Your love. Let Your grace be sufficient day by day and let Your power be made perfect in weakness. We ask that You would fill this life with the peace that comes from knowing we are fully forgiven and fully held by You. In Jesus name we pray, amen.

We encourage you to continue to bring every hurt before the Lord in prayer, to speak honestly with Him, and to meditate on how much you have been forgiven in Christ. Forgiveness does not mean that what happened was right or that consequences are removed, but it does mean choosing to release the debt to God and trusting Him to be the righteous judge while you walk in freedom. As you abide in His Word and in prayer, His grace will renew you daily. Titus 2:11 says For the grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation to all men, and that same grace instructs and empowers us to live in a way that honors Him. Keep looking to Jesus, and He will be faithful to give you both the will and the strength to forgive.

We appreciate you bringing this before God so openly. The desire to forgive and to experience His grace more fully is a tender and courageous prayer, and we are honored to stand with you in it.

Something we have found helpful is that forgiveness often has two parts that move at different speeds. There is a decision, a quiet choice before God to let go of getting even and to treat the other person as someone valuable to Him. Then there is the emotional side, where feelings of hurt, anger or fear slowly loosen their hold. The decision can be made in a moment, while the emotions may rise and fall for a while. That gap is normal and does not mean your decision was not real.

A small step that helps some is to name the decision clearly in prayer, even briefly, and then when the old feelings come back, simply and calmly reaffirm that choice to God without judging yourself for still feeling the ache. It is a way of inviting His grace into each day.

Father, we lift our friend to You now. Thank You for Your kindness toward them. Pour out Your strength to forgive and let them taste Your grace anew. Heal what is still sore, teach them to rest in Your mercy, and guide their heart day by day. In Jesus name we pray, amen.

Your longing for strength to forgive and for a new experience of grace is itself evidence that grace is already at work in you, for everything is of Divine Grace, it is given of Grace, it is received through Grace, and it is understood by Grace.

Scripture declares that we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of His Grace. Mark that measure. It is not according to the strength of your faith, nor according to the depth of your feeling, but according to the riches of His free favor. That tells us that His pardon is freely given, without price or merit in us, that it is irreversible when once bestowed, and that it carries with it unfailing renewal for each day of need. Of His fullness we receive Grace for Grace, Grace upon Grace.

You have not to persuade an unwilling God to be willing to forgive. He delights in mercy. There is forgiveness with Him, that He may be feared, and that forgiveness is to be had now, complete and sincere and lasting. He blots out transgressions for His own sake, and He does it in the present moment when a sinner looks to Christ. If you are the chief of sinners you may have the chief of sinners forgiveness through Jesus Christ alone, for He has been exalted to be a Prince and a Saviour to give forgiveness of sins.

And the same grace that forgives you will teach and enable you to forgive others. We are to forgive even as God for Christ's sake has forgiven us. For us to forgive, though it feels great, should be regarded as a small matter compared with what we have been forgiven. He not only forgave us at the first, but He continues daily to forgive, and from that bright example we gather grace to forgive others even to seventy times seven. This strength does not come from exertion, for Divine Grace that forgives sin and works faith is no prize for exertion but a gift for those without strength. Being emptied of self and led to accept the things that are freely given to us of God, we are spiritually enriched.

May the Lord grant your request according to His word. May He show you anew the absolute freeness and fullness of His pardon in Christ, and by His Spirit work in you the will and the power to release those who have wronged you, even as you have been released from an unpayable debt.

We pray that God would give you His strength where yours fails, that He would renew in your soul a fresh and clear sense of His forgiving love, that you would know that your sins are blotted out through the blood of Christ, and that from that assurance you would be made able to forgive freely, heartily, and continually, to the praise of the riches of His Grace. In Jesus name, Amen.
