Forgiveness

We hear the honesty in your heart and we stand with you in this struggle to forgive your mother, and we thank you for coming before the Father in Jesus' name, for it is only through Him that we have access to God and find grace to help in time of need.

Forgiveness can feel impossible in our own strength, especially when the wound comes from a parent, and the Lord knows the depth of that pain. Scripture calls us to forgive as we have been forgiven, not because the hurt was small, but because we have been greatly forgiven ourselves. Ephesians 4:32 says, And be kind to one another, tender hearted, forgiving each other, just as God also in Christ forgave you. And Colossians 3:13 says, bearing with one another, and forgiving each other, if any man has a complaint against any; even as Christ forgave you, so you also do. Jesus also teaches us in Matthew 6:14-15, For if you forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. But if you don't forgive men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses. This is not to bring condemnation but to show us how serious and freeing forgiveness is, releasing us from the bitterness that can take root when we hold onto hurt.

We want to gently remind you that forgiving does not mean pretending the hurt did not happen or that what was done was right, but it is choosing to release the debt to the Lord and trust Him as the righteous judge. It is also part of honoring your father and mother as the Lord commands in Exodus 20:12, Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be long in the land which Yahweh your God gives you, which we do out of obedience to God even when the relationship is difficult.

We love that you asked for His strength, because He does not ask you to do this alone. Philippians 4:13 says, I can do all things through Christ, who strengthens me. And the Lord says in 2 Corinthians 12:9, My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness. When you feel weak and unable to forgive, that is the very place His power can work in you. Psalm 147:3 also reminds us, He heals the broken in heart, and binds up their wounds, and we trust He is healing your heart even now.

We pray together for you now.

Father, in the name of Jesus Christ we come before Your throne of grace and we lift up this dear one to You. Lord, You see the pain carried from childhood and the struggle to forgive a mother. We ask You to pour out Your strength and Your grace upon this heart. Soften what has been hardened by hurt, heal what has been wounded, and help to release all bitterness and resentment into Your hands. Teach us to forgive as You have forgiven us in Christ, not by our own willpower but by the power of Your Holy Spirit. Give wisdom for healthy boundaries where needed, and restore what can be restored according to Your will. Help to honor You in this relationship and to walk in freedom, knowing that You are the healer and the judge. Fill this heart with Your peace that passes understanding and let Your love cast out all fear and pain. In Jesus' name we pray, amen.

We encourage you to continue to bring this to the Lord daily in prayer, to speak honestly to Him about the hurt, and to ask Him to help you bless your mother in prayer even when it is hard. As you abide in His Word and let Him renew your mind, He will continue to give you the strength to forgive and to walk in freedom. We are praying that the Lord will complete the good work He has begun in you.

Heal Me Lord Jesus Spirit, Soul, And Body

We appreciate you being honest about this. Wanting to forgive your mother while still feeling hurt is a painful place to be, and asking for God's strength is a good and humble step.

One thing that has helped many people is understanding that forgiveness often happens in two parts. There is a decision we make to release the right to get back at someone and to choose not to hold the debt over them. Then there are the feelings, which often take much longer to soften. That does not mean the decision was not real, it just means our hearts need more time and grace to catch up.

If it would help, you might try quietly telling God in your own words that you choose to forgive, even as you ask Him to help your emotions heal over time. When painful memories return, you can gently remind yourself of that choice without demanding that all hurt disappear at once. Talking with a trusted pastor or counselor can also give you steady support as you walk through this.

Father, we bring our friend before You and thank You for the desire to forgive. Please give strength for today, soften what is still raw, and lead with Your love and wisdom in this relationship with their mother. Help them rest in Your grace as You do Your work in their heart. In Jesus' name, amen.
