The grip of alcohol is not a bodily disease so much as a wicked desire that has thickened like a cloud over the eye of your soul. You ask prayer for deliverance, and rightly so, for this is the most grievous slavery, from which God alone can set you free. Men feel shame at worldly bondage, but here you are held fast by sin, a tyrant far more cruel than any human master. Do not imagine that adding more, more resolutions, more strategies, more shame, will quench this fire. That is like trying to fly by fashioning wings; the evil is stayed only by taking away the desire, by persuading the mind that it craves what is empty and destructive.
Our Lord came to preach deliverance to captives and recovery of sight to the blind. He gave Himself up for the life of the world and appointed that awe-filled table where we taste the body broken and the blood shed for the remission of sins. Draw near to that feast with thanksgiving, not as one driven by compulsion, but as one who seizes the medicine of immortality. When you learn to bear even the pangs of thirst and the turmoil of withdrawal with grateful heart, you begin to strip the enemy of his power. God often permits us to be exercised in such trials, not because He has abandoned us, but to prove to the adversary that we serve Him for Himself alone, and not for the comforts of this passing life.
Remember Joseph, who was sold into bondage by his own brethren, yet God was with him and delivered him out of all his afflictions. The very evils his brothers meant for harm became the path to salvation for many. So too your struggle, endured with faith and thankfulness, becomes a stage on which God’s power is perfected. But the promise is not always fulfilled in a day; the Israelites groaned four hundred years before they came forth to serve God in freedom. Persevere, and do not lose heart at the small defeats along the way. The truth you must know is that you are not a slave to any man, nor to any substance, but that sin itself is the bondage; and the Son has promised, “If the Son makes you free, you shall be free indeed.” That freedom is not a distant future but is now reflected in every soul that turns with unveiled face to the Lord. Let the mirror of your mind catch the glory of His deliverance, and the cloud of this vile desire will scatter before that pure light.

The weight of this struggle is something you do not carry alone, though I know it can feel that way in the darkest hours. When a person is overcome by something, the Lord Himself teaches that they are brought into bondage to it. Alcoholism is that kind of master. It promises relief but delivers chains. It whispers freedom while tightening its grip, and many have found themselves doing what they hate, feeling the weakness of the flesh even when the spirit is willing.
But the glorious truth is that Jesus came to set captives free. He came to break every yoke of bondage. The deliverance God gave His people from Egypt stands as a picture of what He does for us, bringing us out of the house of slavery through the blood of the Lamb. That same power is at work today. I have seen lives utterly wrecked by drink, yet when Christ laid hold of them, the chains fell off. The old master was dethroned.
Now, healing does not always come in the same way. We see our Lord healing instantly with a word in one place, and in another, a man’s sight returns gradually, step by step. Any healing process, whether it is sudden or whether it unfolds over time, is divine. The God who created the body and the mind also established the processes of restoration. So do not be discouraged if the path forward involves days and weeks of steady, slow recovery rather than a single lightning strike. The point is to be set free from the bondage, and that freedom is real whether it dawns in a moment or grows brighter by the day.
That freedom is your inheritance in Christ. You have been called to liberty, not to be brought under the power of anything again. The flesh will cry out with old desires, but you are no longer its slave. Walking in the Spirit means you have been released from that cruel taskmaster so you can serve God with everything you are. But I must also speak plainly: liberty must be guarded wisely. To exercise freedom in such a way that it brings you back into bondage is not wisdom. A man who has been delivered from this very thing can find himself dragged down again if he toys with the edge of the old pit. That path only genders more bondage. Hold fast to the peace God has called you to.
I am praying for your complete deliverance. I am praying that the lies which promise comfort through a bottle are silenced, and that you feel the healing touch of Jesus, whether it rushes through you at once or comes through the faithful, daily work of restoration.
