We hear your cry for help, and our hearts ache with you as you battle the grip of alcoholism. This disease is a fierce enemy, but we serve a God who is mightier than any chain that binds. The Bible tells us, "No temptation has taken you except what is common to man. God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted above what you are able, but will with the temptation also make the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it" (1 Corinthians 10:13 WEB). You are not alone in this struggle, and there is a way out through Christ.

First, we must address the spiritual reality of this battle. Alcoholism is not merely a physical or emotional struggle, it is a spiritual stronghold. The enemy seeks to steal, kill, and destroy (John 10:10), and addiction is one of his most effective tools. But Jesus came to set the captives free, and He has already won the victory. "The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because he has anointed me to preach good news to the poor. He has sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to proclaim release to the captives, recovering of sight to the blind, to deliver those who are crushed" (Luke 4:18 WEB). We rebuke the spirit of addiction in the name of Jesus and command it to loose its grip on you. You are a child of God, and no weapon formed against you shall prosper (Isaiah 54:17).

We also recognize that this battle requires practical steps. The Bible instructs us, "Let him who stole steal no more; but rather let him labor, working with his hands the thing that is good, that he may have something to give to him who has need" (Ephesians 4:28 WEB). In the same way, we encourage you to take actionable steps to break free from this bondage. Seek accountability through a trusted Christian brother or sister, join a biblically sound recovery program, and consider professional help if needed. Do not be ashamed to ask for support, true strength is found in humility. "Confess your offenses to one another, and pray for one another, that you may be healed. The insistent prayer of a righteous person is powerfully effective" (James 5:16 WEB).

We must also address the root of this struggle. Often, addiction is a misguided attempt to fill a void that only God can satisfy. The world offers temporary relief, but true peace and fulfillment come from a relationship with Jesus Christ. If you have not already, we urge you to surrender your life to Him. "For all have sinned, and fall short of the glory of God" (Romans 3:23 WEB), but "if you will confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved" (Romans 10:9 WEB). Salvation is the first step to true freedom.

Let us pray together:

Heavenly Father, we come before You with heavy hearts, lifting up our brother/sister who is struggling under the weight of alcoholism. Lord, You see the pain, the shame, and the desperation. We ask that You would break every chain of addiction in their life. Pour out Your Holy Spirit upon them, filling them with Your peace, strength, and hope. Remind them that they are not defined by this struggle but by the blood of Jesus, which has set them free.

Father, we rebuke the spirit of addiction in the name of Jesus. We declare that no weapon formed against them shall prosper. Give them the courage to take the necessary steps toward freedom, accountability, support, and professional help if needed. Surround them with godly men/women who will walk alongside them in this journey.

Lord, we ask that You would heal the wounds that may have led to this bondage. Comfort them in their moments of weakness and remind them of Your unfailing love. Help them to find their identity in Christ, not in their struggles. May they experience the fullness of life that You promise to those who follow You.

We pray for their family and loved ones, that You would give them wisdom, patience, and compassion as they support our brother/sister. Unite them in prayer and love, and may Your presence be tangible in their midst.

Above all, Lord, we pray that they would draw near to You. If they have not yet surrendered their life to Jesus, we ask that You would soften their heart and reveal Yourself to them. May they experience the freedom that comes from knowing You as their Savior and Lord.

We ask all these things in the mighty name of Jesus, the name above every name, the name by which we are saved and set free. Amen.

You are not alone in this fight. The same power that raised Christ from the dead lives in you if you have placed your faith in Him (Romans 8:11). Cling to His promises, lean on His strength, and trust that He is working all things together for your good (Romans 8:28). Freedom is possible, and we stand with you in prayer and support. Keep pressing forward, your breakthrough is coming.

It is painful to watch someone you care about become a prisoner of alcohol. The confusion, the broken promises, the person you once knew slipping away, we ache with you in this. And we want you to know that your faithful prayers over this situation are not wasted. God sees your love for .

When addiction takes hold, it is never just a single cause. The grip you described as a “disease” is real: it wraps deep suffering, altered brain chemistry, and often hidden wounds all up together. That means the way out is rarely a simple decision or a strong lecture. Lasting change usually comes through a long, layered process. Your role in that process can feel so limited, but it is still vital.

Our most important step right now is to keep the relationship warm and open. It is natural to want to fix or to team up with others to force a change, but that kind of pressure frequently backfires. Instead, we can simply remain a safe, loving presence, someone who refuses to cut them off, and who will be there for an honest conversation whenever they are ready. That doesn’t mean enabling danger or lies; it means loving with steady boundaries and a heart that stays soft.

As you carry this weight, please don’t carry it alone. Seek out a support group like Al-Anon, or a wise friend or pastor who understands addiction, so your own hope stays anchored. Sometimes, when the time is right, a planned family intervention guided by a professional can help, but that comes later, with careful preparation.

Right now, we join you in praying.

Lord Jesus, thank you that you are not distant from ’s suffering or from this family’s tears. We ask you to break the chains of alcoholism and bring them into the light of true recovery. Give their loved ones supernatural wisdom and tender endurance. Guard them from despair, and let your mercy pave a path out of this darkness. We place into your strong hands, trusting you alone. Amen.

The soul bound by drink is in a dungeon whose bars no arm of flesh can break. The archers of this evil habit have sorely wounded you, and you cry out by reason of your bondage. That very cry is not unheard in heaven. The Lord brought Israel forth from Egypt, but they had sighed and groaned under the lash before deliverance came. So your misery, your repeated falls, your fearful sense of helplessness, all this is the Spirit of God showing you that salvation is of the Lord alone. It is not fancied slavery, but very truth, when you feel the chains of alcohol cutting into your will and eating up your life.

But here is the glad tidings: deliverance is by divine power. You cannot escape the pit by your own devices. Resolutions, pledges signed with a trembling hand, the shame of yesterday, none of these can snap the fetters. Yet God in Christ Jesus has found a ransom. The clock of mercy struck in heaven the hour and moment of your deliverance, for the time had come! The Lamb was slain, and His precious blood is the price of liberty for every captive who will look to Him. If the Master who held you in bondage says, “I have the ransom for you,” then you must feel certain of your liberty, for He will hold you in bondage no longer.

Cease from the thought that your sin is too deep. The Spirit who brought you into this painful conviction did not do so to leave you in despair. We have not received the Spirit of bondage again to fear, but the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father. That same Spirit who makes you loathe the chain also points you to the Deliverer. The jailor is not the final voice; the Redeemer speaks. Go then to the cross, speak to the winds no more of your grief, but pour it out before the pitiful heart of Jesus, who knows what it is to be plunged in the darkness for our sake.

And after deliverance comes, as it surely shall if you rest your soul on Him, then your tongue shall be loosed to declare the works of the Lord. You shall not die, but live, and tell what it is to be brought up from the horrible pit. What does the man know of the sea who has only walked on the beach? But the sailor saved from the deep has a story to make angels marvel. Your very affliction, sored and bitter as it is, may be the strange preparation for a testimony that will strengthen many a trembling soul. When the Lord gives you liberty, it will be no license, but the true freedom of a child of God, walking in the light. Then you will gird on your weapon and carry the war into the enemy’s territory, warning others and pointing them to the Ransom.

Look to Christ alone for sanctification. The same hand that justifies must also break the power of sin within you. That foul habit will try to reassert its dominion; you must daily receive the Spirit of adoption, fresh grace from the heavenly Father, to remain free. But God, who began the work, will be faithful to complete it. He will whisper to your heart in the trial, “You shall not be crushed.” So fix your heart, trusting in the Lord, and in quietude shall be your deliverance from fret and faint. The promised deliverance shall be as noteworthy as the Red Sea parting, and you shall ever after keep it in memory, praising Him with eloquent gratitude among the gathered saints.

May God in Jesus' name answer your prayer request according to God's perfect love, wisdom, will, timing, grace, and mercy. God is so in love with you. Be Encouraged!
