Many are quick to speak the words of confession with their lips, yet the tongue can move while the heart remains distant. It is good that you hold up the apostolic word from Romans, for truly, if one believes in the heart that God raised Christ from the dead, and confesses Him as Lord, the gate of salvation stands open. But do not stop at the gate, for the path within is one of repentance and a life made new. I have seen souls content with a brief utterance, imagining that because they have named the Name they have already secured the prize. Such neglect what John the Baptist thundered: “Bring forth fruits meet for repentance.” The confession of the mouth must be the overflow of a heart already humbled and mourning over its own sins. That sorrow which is according to God works repentance unto salvation without regret.

Consider the blessed Peter, whose confession became the rock upon which the Church was built. Yet even he was not perfected in a moment. Christ Himself learned obedience through sufferings, and having been made perfect, He became the author of eternal salvation to all who obey Him. If the Son needed to learn obedience in the days of His flesh, how much more must we who are dust and ashes follow in that same hard school? Let those who seek salvation not only turn from their sins in a fleeting thought, but fasten themselves to a lifelong habit of obeying the Master, walking as He walked, and sealing their faith by deeds.

Do not neglect the potent remedy of almsgiving. For as water quenches a raging fire, so mercy poured out upon the poor extinguishes the burning of past transgressions. It is the essential herb in the medicine of repentance, and without it the soul’s healing remains incomplete. Therefore, when you pray for those who are looking for salvation, entreat the Lord that He would grant them not only a ready confession on the lips, but a deep and lasting conversion of the heart. Ask that the Holy Spirit would so wound them with the knowledge of their own evil that they flee to Christ as their only refuge, and then adorn that faith with a life so visibly changed that it becomes the glory of the Friend of man who desires all to be saved. For nothing is of ourselves, but all of God; yet we must strive to make our calling and election sure, working out our own salvation with fear and trembling, as those who know that the Judge stands at the door. Commend them earnestly to the mercy of God, and let your own life be a lamp that lights their way.

The cry of a heart seeking salvation is always heard by God. You have already put your finger on the very promise He has given: if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. That is not an empty formula. It is the surrender of your whole life to His lordship, and the deep, settled conviction that His resurrection is the bedrock of your hope. The faith that saves is not just a mental nod; it is the substance of what you now hope for, the evidence of what your eyes cannot yet see. It is a gift you receive, not a performance you perfect.

That faith, as you begin to walk in it, will prove its own reality. A true saving faith cannot help but work. Just as Abraham believed God and it was counted to him as righteousness, and then his obedience became the demonstration of that faith, so your trust in Christ will bring forth the fruit of a changed life. You are not saved by your obedience, but a genuine faith will never remain alone. The works that follow are not an attempt to add something to what Christ has done; they are simply the proof that He has done a new thing in you. Your very desire to turn from sin, to follow and obey Jesus, already shows He is stirring that faith within you.

Do not be troubled if your faith feels small or if you cannot produce strong emotions. The promise does not rest on your feelings; it rests on God’s word. Faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God. That is why your own advice to start reading the book of John is so wise. There you will see Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith, who became the source of eternal salvation. As you hear His voice in Scripture, the Spirit who raised Him from the dead will confirm this life in you. He received the Spirit not by human effort but by the hearing of faith, and so do you.

You may find that faith has its seasons. Great men and women of faith in Scripture had lapses, hid in caves, and struggled to believe the promise at times. God is not surprised by your weakness. His desire is for you to keep looking to Him, trusting that He who began this work will complete it. With heart believing and mouth confessing, you are righteous before Him not because of any ordinance or law, but because you have a High Priest whose sacrifice is enough. He imputes righteousness to you through this very faith.

So receive the salvation Christ has already purchased. Believe that He loves you and gave Himself for you. Let that belief prompt a life that honors Him, not as a burden but as your joyful response. And when doubts creep in, return to the simplicity of the word: Jesus is Lord, and God raised Him from the dead. Your mouth speaks what your heart holds. Let it be so today, and you will find that what you seek in hope will one day be fully yours in sight.

What a powerful reminder from Romans 10:9-10—confessing with our mouths and believing in our hearts that Jesus is Lord brings eternal life!
