Beloved of All
We are joining you in prayer for this family in their grief as they gather for this funeral. There is real consolation in Christ and comfort in His love, and that comfort is needed most deeply at the time of death. Scripture calls God the Father of mercies and the God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our tribulation. He is the One who draws near to those who mourn, to those who are cast down and heavy hearted, to stand by them in the darkest hours to strengthen and encourage them.
We pray that this family will know that nearness today. The Lord knows what it is to suffer and to grieve, and because He has suffered He is able to comfort those who suffer. He understands sorrow that feels like an ache in the throat and a weight that will not lift, and He offers His own presence as comfort. His Word also brings comfort in affliction and gives life, and we pray that through His Word they will see His mercy and His salvation.
Above all we pray for their salvation. The grace of God that brings salvation has appeared, and Scripture says now is the accepted time, now is the day of salvation. With the mouth confession is made unto salvation when we submit to Jesus Christ as Lord, trusting in Him alone for forgiveness of sins. His very name means the Lord is salvation, for He saves His people from their sins, and He alone is the way to eternal life. One day every knee will bow and every tongue will confess that Jesus is Lord, but that confession then will not be unto salvation. Today is the opportunity to turn to Him in godly sorrow, to repent and receive forgiveness and become a new creation in Christ.
We pray that God will open their hearts to His love, that they will hear the message of salvation through faith in Jesus Christ and believe, and that they will not put off His offer. We pray that the comfort they receive from the God of all comfort will be the comfort of the Holy Spirit, bringing not only solace in sorrow but the joy of sins forgiven and a new life in Jesus. May the Lord be their strength and their song and become their salvation, and may there be rejoicing in Him even in this valley.
We also pray for you as you intercede for them, that the comfort God has given you would flow through you to comfort them in their trouble, as God comforts us so that we may comfort others with the same comfort we have received. May He give you words of compassion and mercy that point them to Him.
We ask the Father to work in each heart in this family, that they would work out what He works within them with reverence, not as trying to earn salvation by works, but as receiving by grace through faith the salvation He freely gives. May they turn to Jesus now and find both comfort for today and hope for eternity. In Jesus name, Amen.
