The notice came, and with it a fresh wave of fear. You have already walked through the valley of loss, and now on top of that sorrow comes this anxiety about the houses, the places where you and your husband made a life together. It is no small thing to face creditors and legal deadlines when your heart is already so heavy. But I want you to hear this: the God who has carried you thus far has not let go of His child.
He is a shelter for you, even now. The same arms that caught your husband's spirit in the moment of his departure are beneath you today. You may feel the deep waters rising, the deep of grief and the deep of uncertainty calling to one another, but underneath are the everlasting arms. They cannot give way. The Lord does not simply observe your trouble from a distance; He gathers you into Himself and becomes your hiding place. When the billows roll, remember that the sea belongs to Him. Every wave that seems to threaten you is under His command, and He will not let it pull you under.
This matter of the estate is not beyond His reach. He knows the number of your days and the boundaries of your dwelling place. He can silence any voice that would rise against your peace, just as He once turned the hearts of watchful enemies into confusion and made a way of escape for His servant when escape seemed impossible. The God who kept both houses standing through all the years you lived in them can keep them for you now. He is not limited by lawyers, nor baffled by creditors. He does as He pleases in the armies of heaven and among the inhabitants of the earth, and it is His pleasure to care for the widow and to protect the fatherless.
But more than this, I want you to taste the sweetness of His favor. That is the word you used, and it is a good word. For when the Lord shows favor, He does not give grudgingly. He does not load you with a little and then stand back to see if you will manage. No, He loads you with benefits, He adorns your neck with His gifts, and He does it with delight. The very things you fear losing are held in His hand, and He can make them doubly secure. Do not measure His ability by the letter of the law or the strength of a creditor's claim. Measure it by the cross of Christ. If He did not spare His own Son but gave Him up for you, will He not also with Him graciously give you all things? The God of your mercy will go before you. He will meet the deadline, overrule the proceedings, and make the crooked straight. He can cause the notice to go unanswered, or if an answer comes, He can turn it aside as easily as a shepherd shuts the mouth of a prowling dog.
I would not have you sleep with a false peace, for the trouble is real. But I would have you sleep with the true peace, the peace of God that passes understanding, the peace that keeps the heart and mind through Christ Jesus. The business of your life has been entrusted to a faithful Creator. The same One who kept you while you were yet a stranger to grace, and who brought you into the household of faith, will keep you to the end. Your earthly inheritance may seem to hang in the balance, but your heavenly inheritance is sure. And often the Lord lets us feel the pinch in temporal things so that we may lean harder on Him and find that He is enough. Yet He is not a hard master; He delights to give good gifts. So take your fears and spread them out before the Mercy Seat. Tell Him plainly, "Lord, I need both houses. I need the creditors to be still. I need Your favor." He hears. He has accepted you in the Beloved, and your prayers rise as a sweet savor before Him.
Now let us pray.
Lord Jesus, You who are the same yesterday, today, and forever, look upon Your daughter in her time of need. She has lost the earthly companion of her life, and now the provisions for her future seem threatened. But You are her Husband now, her Advocate, her Shield. Speak peace to the waves that roar around her. Manage for her the affairs that are too heavy for her to carry, and let no weapon formed against her prosper. Cause the notice to fall as a dead letter if it would bring harm, and preserve the homes that hold so many memories. More than all, give her rest in Your perfect will, knowing that You will never leave her nor forsake her. Into Your pierced hands she commits her cause, and into the shelter of Your wings she hides herself. Be glorified in her deliverance, and let her heart sing again of the God of her mercy. Amen.
