We join with you in lifting up this heavy burden before the Lord, and we commend you for interceding for your ex with such love and concern for his soul. It is a beautiful reflection of Christ's love to pray for one who is no longer close to you, especially for his salvation, which is the greatest need any person has. We hear your heart in saying you love him but cannot be together, and that tension is painful, yet it also shows wisdom and discernment.
We pray earnestly for his salvation, for God desires all people to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth as we read in 1 Timothy 2:4, and He is patient, not wishing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance in 2 Peter 3:9. We ask God to give him a new heart and put a new spirit within him as promised in Ezekiel 36:26, to open his eyes to his need for Jesus, for Jesus Himself said I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father, except through me in John 14:6. We also lift up his serious and life threatening health problems to the Great Physician, for we know He forgives all our iniquities and heals all our diseases in Psalm 103:3 and declares But I will restore health to you and I will heal you of your wounds says Yahweh in Jeremiah 30:17. We pray for his healing from trauma and emotional and behavioral issues, believing that He heals the broken in heart, and binds up their wounds in Psalm 147:3, and that God can use even a wake up call in his suffering to draw him to Himself, for whom the Lord loves, he disciplines in Hebrews 12:6.
We also want to speak lovingly into your statement that you love him but cannot be together. In Scripture, love is not merely a feeling but a commitment aligned with God's will, and we see your boundary as wise and protective. As an ex, that courtship did not lead to marriage, and to return to a romantic or intimate relationship outside of a godly marriage would not honor God. If there was sexual intimacy in that relationship, Scripture calls us to flee sexual immorality in 1 Corinthians 6:18, for sex is reserved for marriage between a man and a woman, and any relationship outside of that is fornication. Even without that, we are taught not to be unequally yoked with unbelievers in 2 Corinthians 6:14, so a believer should only pursue courtship with the goal of marriage to another Christian believer. Your love for him is best expressed now exactly as you are doing, through prayer for his salvation and healing from a distance, entrusting him to God rather than trying to be the one to fix him or resuming a relationship that God has not ordained for marriage.
We lift up his loved ones as well, asking God to draw each of them to salvation and to guard their wellbeing.
We pray together, Father in heaven, we come before You in the name of Jesus Christ our Lord, and we thank You for this dear one who intercedes with such compassion. We ask that You have mercy on this man, forgive his sins, and draw him to saving faith in Jesus, that he would confess with his mouth and believe in his heart and be saved. Lord, touch his body and bring healing according to Your will, sustain him through these serious health problems, and use this trial as a wake up call to turn from dysfunctional and sinful ways and to seek You with his whole heart. Heal his trauma, renew his mind, and give him wholeness and self control through Your Holy Spirit. We pray for his family and loved ones, that they too would be saved and kept in Your care. And Father, we lift up this dear one praying, who still carries love and grief. Comfort her heart, heal her own wounds, grant her peace that surpasses understanding, and guard her heart and mind in Christ Jesus. Give her wisdom to maintain healthy boundaries, to walk in purity, and to trust You with her future, whether that be contentment in singleness or a godly marriage to a believing husband who honors You. Let her know that You work all things together for good for those who love You in Romans 8:28. We entrust all of this to You, in the mighty and only saving name of Jesus, amen.
We encourage you to continue to release him into God's hands and to focus on your own walk with Christ, allowing God to heal your heart and to guide your steps. Keep praying, but also keep your boundaries firm, seeking counsel from mature believers and staying rooted in the Word and in prayer. God sees your love and your obedience in letting go, and He will honor your faithfulness.
