Ex

Dhitlor

Beloved Servant
I am having a hard time getting over an ex who is unequally yoked to me because he is not a Christian. I am starting to want God to let me find out something horrible about our relationship to totally force me to not want to go back to him. The relationship was already unhealthy and even abusive in many ways so finding out something else bad wouldn't be far fetched but I still love him and have hope even though I know God doesn't want me with him. Please pray for me about this. Thank you.

We hear the pain and honesty in your request and we are joining with you in prayer before our Heavenly Father in Jesus name. We thank you for recognizing that this relationship was unequally yoked and unhealthy and even abusive, and for wanting to honor what God wants for you even while your heart still feels torn.

We want to gently and lovingly speak truth over what you are feeling. The Word says in 2 Corinthians 6:14 Do not be unequally yoked with unbelievers, for what fellowship has righteousness and iniquity Or what fellowship has light with darkness. God does not give this command to deprive you but to protect you. A marriage as God designed it is a lifelong commitment between a man and a woman where both are believers walking together toward Christ, and any courtship that looks toward marriage should be with that same goal. To be yoked to someone who does not know Christ is to be pulled in two different directions spiritually, and it cannot lead to the oneness and peace God intends for a godly marriage.

We also want to address the abuse you mentioned. Abuse in any form is not love and is not from God. Love is patient and is kind, love does not behave itself improperly and is not provoked, as we see in 1 Corinthians 13:4-5. The fact that you still love him and have hope does not mean God is calling you back. Often after an unhealthy and abusive relationship our hearts can form a trauma bond that feels like love but is really deep hurt and longing. We encourage you to see that your compassion is beautiful but it is not a sign to return. Forgiveness does not require restoration of a romantic relationship, especially one God has shown you is not His will.

We understand why you are asking God to let you find out something horrible to force you to not want to go back, but we want to lovingly correct that thought. You do not need another wound to obey God. His Word is already enough. When we ask for a more painful revelation we are asking God to hurt us more in order to do what He has already clearly told us to do. Instead we encourage you to trust and obey because He is trustworthy. Proverbs 3:5-6 says Trust in Yahweh with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight. And Psalm 34:18 reminds us Yahweh is near to those who have a broken heart, and saves those who have a crushed spirit. He is near to you right now in this brokenheartedness and He heals the broken in heart, and binds up their wounds as Psalm 147:3 tells us.

If there was sexual intimacy in this relationship outside of marriage, we want to lovingly call that what Scripture calls it, fornication, and encourage you to bring it to the Lord in repentance. 1 Corinthians 6:18 says Flee sexual immorality. Every sin that a man does is outside the body, but he who commits sexual immorality sins against his own body. God is faithful to forgive when we confess. 1 John 1:9 says If we confess our sins, he is faithful and righteous to forgive us the sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. There is no condemnation for those who are in Christ, only cleansing and a call to walk in purity going forward as you look toward a future godly marriage if that is His will for you.

We also noticed your request speaks of God but does not mention Jesus Christ. We want to gently remind you that it is only by the name of Jesus that we have access to God and it is only through Him that we are saved. Jesus said in John 14:6 I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father, except through me. And Acts 4:12 says There is salvation in none other, for neither is there any other name under heaven, that is given among men, by which we must be saved. If you have not already placed your full trust in Jesus as Lord and Savior, believing He died for your sins and rose again, we encourage you to do so today. It is through Him we can bring every burden and be heard.

So we pray together with you now.

Father in heaven, we come before You in the precious name of Jesus Christ. We lift up Your daughter to You. You see her broken heart, her inner battle between what she feels and what she knows is Your will. Lord we ask You to heal her heart deeply. Bind up her wounds. Comfort her as only You can and fill the empty places with Your perfect love that casts out fear. Give her strength to keep no contact where needed and to set healthy biblical boundaries. Renew her mind by Your Word and help her to take every thought captive to the obedience of Christ as 2 Corinthians 10:5 teaches. Help her to guard her heart as Proverbs 4:23 says, for out of it is the wellspring of life. Lord remove the lingering hope of returning to what was abusive and unequally yoked, and replace it with hope in You and in Your good plans. Jeremiah 29:11 says For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, says Yahweh, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you hope and a future. Let her trust that Your plan is better than any painful attachment. If it is Your will, in Your perfect timing prepare for her a godly spouse, a believing man who will love her as Christ loved the church and honor a lifelong marriage covenant that glorifies You. Until then, help her to walk in purity, in community, and in close fellowship with other believers who can counsel and support her. Let Your peace which surpasses all understanding guard her heart and mind in Christ Jesus as Philippians 4:7 promises. We ask for deliverance from any guilt, shame, or condemnation, and we thank You that Your grace is sufficient. We pray all this in the name of Jesus our only hope and Savior. Amen.

We encourage you to stay rooted in Scripture daily, to seek godly counsel from a pastor or mature believing women in your church, and to not walk through this alone. Keep surrendering your feelings to the Lord honestly in prayer, but choose obedience even when feelings linger. God is faithful and He will carry you through this season into wholeness and joy in Him.

Thank you for sharing something so tender and honest. It makes sense that part of you still loves him and holds out hope, while another part knows the relationship was unhealthy and even abusive and not where God is leading you. Wanting to discover something horrible so you would finally feel forced to let go is an understandable wish when your heart feels torn. It shows how hard you are trying to do the right thing even while the feelings are still strong.

We hear how much you want clarity that lasts, not just another painful push. One thing that has helped others in this kind of painful letting go is learning to build steadier internal boundaries, like a property line for your heart. That means giving yourself permission to own your own thoughts, feelings, choices and time, and to be clear when you mean yes and when you mean no, even when you feel connected to someone. Boundaries do not make the ache disappear, but they protect your freedom to make choices aligned with your wellbeing. It can help to take a few practical steps while you pray through this, such as limiting contact where you can, telling a trusted pastor, counselor or safe friend what you are walking through, and reaching out for professional support for the abuse you experienced. A counselor or advocate can walk with you in a way prayer alone is not meant to carry.

Father, we lift our sister to you in Jesus name. Cover her with your protection, give her wisdom for each next decision, and bring steady healing to the places that still hurt. Surround her with safe, caring people and help her sense your presence and direction day by day. Amen.

Your honest confession has been heard, and there is much tenderness of heart in it that the Lord will not despise. You love one who does not love Christ, and you feel the pull of that old yoke even while you know it was unhealthy and wounding to your soul. To feel love and hope lingering after such a bond is not strange, for the heart is slow to unlearn what it has once cherished, yet the Word of God is plain and merciful when it says, Be ye not unequally yoked together with unbelievers.

You thought the yoke of Christ was hard when it called you to turn from this path, and you have found since how hard is the other yoke. An unbelieving and abusive yoke galls the neck and wounds the spirit. Your nature may still go after it, as a sick man's nature will crave what would be his poison, but the Lord Jesus denies you nothing except that which would be injurious to you. That first loss which obedience seemed to require will be vastly less than the after losses you would incur by seeking to avoid it.

You ask that God would let you find some fresh and horrible thing to force you to let go. Understand what this desire means. You would have another wound to cure a wound, another sorrow to heal a sorrow. But Calvary is the place for the healing balm rather than for the lancet and the knife. The leaves of the tree were for the healing of the nations, and the least thing about Christ is healing. Not only His fruit but His leaves, the very gentlest touch of His grace, have healing virtue to change the life blood and make the nature other than it was before. You need not seek a new horror to make you willing. You need the healing that is already provided in Christ.

Healing and pardon are placed in happy conjunction. When Jesus healed the sick of the palsy He said, Son, be of good cheer, thy sins are forgiven thee. Pardon and healing were one. So it is with you. He healeth the broken in heart and bindeth up their wounds. This suffering does not continue after the soul has learned the preciousness of a Saviour's blood, but while it lasts it is never forgotten in after life, for it humbles us in the dust and makes us look for all in Christ.

We will pray for you, that the Lord will keep you from turning back to what has bruised you, that He will not give you over to the deceit of a hope that would yoke you again to unbelief, but that He will give you grace to take His own yoke upon you. His yoke is easy and His burden is light, and when you have learned the knack of carrying it you will agree with your Master that it is so.

Our prayer to our heavenly Physician for you is this, O Lord, look upon this wounded one who confesses her weakness and her lingering love for what has harmed her. Forgive her sins through the blood of Christ and heal her heart by that same blood. Let the healing leaves of the tree of life be laid upon her wounds. Deliver her from the craving for poison, and teach her to find all her sweetness and nourishment in Christ. Give her strength to walk in obedience to Thy precept and not to be unequally yoked, and grant her to prove that in keeping Thy command there is great reward. Lift her up by Thy hand as Thou didst lift up her who was sick, and let her henceforth serve Thee in newness of life. Keep her feet from the old path and set them fast upon the Rock. In the name of Jesus Christ our only Saviour, Amen.

Heal Me Lord Jesus Spirit, Soul, And Body

Your willingness to bring this painful struggle openly before God is itself a step of faith, and I have prayed for you with care upon hearing it.

I hear how torn your heart feels. You still love this man and part of you still hopes, and at the same time you know clearly that the relationship was unhealthy and even abusive, and that being unequally yoked with one who does not share faith in Christ is not the path God calls His people to walk. That tension is real, and God sees both the affection you feel and the confusion and hurt that comes with it.

You asked God to let you find something horrible about the relationship to force you to let go. I understand that desire. When love pulls strongly, it can feel like only a new shock or calamity could break its hold. But Scripture shows us that God does not teach us to seek more wickedness or more wounds to make obedience possible. As it is written, when God speaks of evil in this life He is often speaking of affliction and trial that He permits to refine us, not of sin or cruelty which He never authors. He does not need to add another betrayal or another injury for His will to be clear. His Word has already spoken, your own experience of harm has already spoken, and His grace is sufficient to help you obey without waiting for further pain.

What you need now is not a new reason to leave, but strength to act on the reasons God has already given you. God calls you to walk worthily of the calling you have received in Christ, with lowliness and meekness and patient endurance, keeping your heart in peace with Him. That walk includes guarding your heart from what harms it and from what pulls you away from Him. Love that is true will not keep you bound to abuse, and hope that is true will rest in Christ alone for salvation and for your future, not in the possibility that an unhealthy relationship might somehow become what God has not intended it to be.

So I prayed for you in this way, and I encourage you to keep praying this way yourself:

Father, have mercy on Your daughter. You see her sorrow and her longing, and You know the weight of loving someone she must release. Heal the wounds left by this relationship, and cover her with Your peace. Give her clarity to see Your will without needing further hurt, and give her strength to turn away from what harms her and draws her from You. Guard her heart and her steps, keep her from returning to what is not good for her, and surround her with faithful people who will walk with her, counsel her, and hold her accountable. Fill the place of loss with Your presence, and renew her hope in Jesus Christ, in whom alone is salvation and life. Teach her to trust that Your way, though it requires letting go, is the way of love and of wholeness. Amen.

Please do not walk through this alone. Share this burden with a trusted pastor or mature believer in your church, stay rooted in Scripture and prayer, and keep wise boundaries including limiting contact with this man so that healing can take place. If you are unsafe at any point, seek help immediately from your church and from trusted support. God is near to the brokenhearted, and He will give you grace day by day to let go, to heal, and to follow Him wholeheartedly.
