Silas
Beloved of All
Your willingness to share so openly shows how much you want to honor God even while you are hurting, and God sees that heart.
First, please release the heavy burden you have placed on yourself about his illness. Cancer and other sicknesses are part of living in a fallen world, they are not a direct punishment from God on a specific person for drawing you into sexual sin. God does discipline His children and He does call all people to repent, but He does not strike an unbeliever with disease to settle a score for your relationship. You also cannot bargain with God by breaking up in hopes that He will then spare someone from illness. That turns your walk with God into a legal exchange, trying to find a way to keep the relationship and still keep God pleased. What God desires is not a formal, rule keeping arrangement where you try to negotiate outcomes, but a loving and wholehearted relationship where you trust Him as your Father. When that vertical relationship with Him is put right, every other relationship begins to find its proper place. When it is out of order, every other relationship becomes confused and painful.
That is why Scripture gives the clear command not to be yoked together with unbelievers, and asks what fellowship light can have with darkness or righteousness with unrighteousness. This is not limited only to marriage, but to any close binding where you become one with someone who does not share your faith. Many people feel their situation is the exception, that love will overcome the difference or that the unbeliever will change after you are together, but the warning is there for a reason. Two people yoked together who live by different foundations are always unequal. The one who follows Christ seeks to live by truth and purity and self control, while the one who does not follow Him does not live by the same ethic. It should not surprise you when lying, manipulation, or twisting the story does not trouble him in the same way it troubles you. God says to come out and be separate and not to touch what is unclean, not to be harsh, but to protect you, because He dwells with His people and wants you to walk with Him without being pulled in two directions.
You were right to recognize that the relationship was disobedient and to step away from sexual immorality, which God has reserved for the lifelong covenant of marriage between one man and one woman. Repentance is the right response, and God fully forgives through Jesus Christ alone when you turn to Him. Salvation and forgiveness come only through faith in Jesus, not through trying to make up for the past by remaining entangled. The fruit of a changed life does not come by straining to earn favor, it comes naturally as a result of a living relationship with Christ.
It is also painful when you have tried to help and stay connected and the other person uses that to control the story or to hurt you. Love does not require you to remain in a close friendship with someone who is manipulative and psychologically abusive, even if that behavior comes from deep trauma. You can love him by praying for him from a distance while also setting clear boundaries for your own health. Continuing to offer help and begging to stay connected when he has chosen to cut off contact and now blames you will only keep the wound open and keep you yoked in an unequal way. It is wise to step back, to not try to answer every accusation, and to not render evil for evil. Seek godly counsel from mature believers around you who know you and can walk with you, and do not walk through this alone.
Your desire for him to know Christ is good, and we can pray for his salvation, for his healing according to God's mercy, and for God to draw him to Jesus. But we should not ask God to bless or preserve a romantic relationship that Scripture calls unequal, or to bring you back together on those terms. If God in His grace saves him in the future, that would be a new life that must be tested over time, not a reason to hold onto the old relationship now. For today, your calling is to give God your whole heart, not a half hearted devotion, and to let Him heal your guilt and regret.
May the Lord show you His forgiveness in a deep way, quiet the shame that tells you that you caused his sickness, heal the hurt from the accusations, and give you wisdom to remain separate where He calls you to be separate. Pray that God would have mercy on this man, open his eyes to the gospel, bring him to repentance and faith in Jesus, and bring healing as God wills. Pray also that God would restore your peace, teach you to walk in the new life of the Spirit, and make your relationship with Him the center that steadies every other part of your life.
