Ex

Your request is honest and painful, and God sees both the obedience and the ache in it. Choosing to step away from a relationship because you know it would be an unequal yoke is a difficult and right decision before the Lord, and it is understandable that your heart has not caught up with what your mind knows to be true.

Scripture says, be not unequally yoked together with unbelievers, for what fellowship has righteousness with unrighteousness and what communion has light with darkness. That is not only about marriage, though it applies most seriously there, but about any close yoke where two lives are bound together to pull in the same direction. When one follows Christ and the other does not, the yoke is always unequal. You do not live by the same rule or the same ethic. What would trouble your conscience may not trouble the other person at all, and that difference does not disappear with affection.

Many people feel their situation is the exception, that love is strong enough to cover the difference or that the other person will change after more time together. Experience shows again and again that this hope leads to deep tearing and regret, with people later saying they wish they had listened to the Word of God. The two do not blend like oil and water. God calls His people to come out and be separate, not because He is unkind, but because He wants to be a Father to you and to lead you into wholeness.

The pain of letting go is real, and healing is often not instant. In the ministry of Jesus we see that some healing is immediate and some is gradual, and that does not make it any less divine. God has built healing processes into our bodies, and He also does a healing work in the mind and emotions, mending scars and wounds that are left behind. He can heal the hurt you feel now in that same gentle, faithful way. There is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh but after the Spirit.

You will face daily choices to walk after the Spirit or to yield to the flesh, to feed the old ache or to trust the Word of God and yield yourself to Him. Temptation is often just that question, who will you yield to, because to whomever you yield, you become his servant. As you choose to put your trust in what God has said and to walk after the Spirit, the righteousness that you could never produce on your own is fulfilled in you as Christ dwells in you by faith.

I pray that God will comfort you and bring that gradual, deep healing to your heart and mind. May He guard your thoughts, renew your affections, and give you strength to remain separate as He asks, trusting that His way is good. May He fill the empty place with His own presence and peace, and in time lead you in His perfect will for your life.

I recently broke up with an ex-boyfriend due to the relationship being out of God's will and us being very unequally yoked but for certain reasons, the end of the relationship (and it seems the end of our friendship along with it as well) is really difficult. Please pray for me. Thank you.
