There is much tenderness and honesty in what you have shared, and we have heard it with prayerful care. You have confessed with a humble spirit that you entered a path you knew to be outside the will of God, moved by loneliness and the desires of the flesh, and you have now turned from it. That confession is itself a mercy, for where sin is owned, grace is ready to heal. Do not despise the sorrow that follows, but bring it to the Lord who pardons and heals in one hand.
You speak of a deep loneliness now, the ache of silence after much shared history, and the wonder that one who was once a friend can now seem so far off. Our Lord knows this loneliness to its full. He was left alone just when, as Man, He most needed human sympathy. He took His disciples into the garden, yet even they could not watch with Him one hour, and in His agony He was alone. If any can understand the sting of being forsaken and forgotten by those near to us, it is Christ. He is not distant from your grief. He draws near to the lonely and lets them find fellowship with Himself that no other friend can give. In His presence you are not forgotten, even when another has closed the door.
You have judged rightly concerning the yoke. Scripture says, Be ye not unequally yoked together with unbelievers, and you found that word to be true by painful experience. The yoke of Christ at first may seem hard because it denies us what our nature craves, yet our nature often craves what would be poison to us. To refuse His yoke is not to find freedom, but to find a heavier yoke afterward. You thought to avoid one loss, and found greater losses in seeking to avoid it. Now you have taken the better way, to bear the easy yoke of Christ, and He will teach you the knack of carrying it, so that what now feels heavy will become light as you walk with Him. To say you will no longer disturb one who has withdrawn, and to keep that quiet boundary, is wise and seemly, especially when there have been signs of a harsh and wounding spirit toward you. The Lord does not call you to pursue what harms your soul. It may indeed be for your good, and for his, that you speak no more, and that grief, though real, can be left in the hands of a faithful God.
We rejoice to pray as you have asked, not that God would bless what was outside His will, nor that He would restore a relationship that was not built upon faith in Christ and upon His design for marriage as a lifelong covenant of one man and one woman, but that He would do the far greater work of healing and salvation.
We will pray for you, that the Lord would heal your wounds. He heals the broken in heart, and binds up their wounds, and His healing and His pardon come together. When Jesus healed the sick of the palsy He first said, Thy sins be forgiven thee, and then He made him whole. So seek first the full assurance of forgiveness through the blood of Christ, and healing will follow in its season. There is an abundance of healing power in Jesus. Not only is His fruit sweet and nourishing, but the very leaves of the tree of life are for the healing of the nations. The least thing about Christ has virtue in it to change the lifeblood and make the nature new. Bring your loneliness, your remorse, your memories, and your bodily weariness to Him, and let those healing leaves do their work day by day through His Word, through prayer, and through the fellowship of His people.
And we will pray for this man and for those dear to him, as you have asked, that God would have mercy upon him in his health of body and mind, and above all in his soul. We ask that the Lord would open his eyes to see his need of a Saviour, that he would hear the Word of God and not merely sit by, but come to Christ for salvation through Jesus Christ alone, for there is no other name by which we must be saved. We ask that God would bring him to repentance and faith, and give him wholeness according to His perfect will, and that He would keep his loved ones also under His gracious care.
May the Lord keep you in this resolution to walk in obedience, to seek purity of life, and to find your company and comfort in Christ and in His church. Do not hasten to fill loneliness with another voice, but let Christ fill it. If sorrow returns in waves, remember that your Saviour has been there before you and now lives to intercede for you.
Our prayer together is this: O Lord, forgive Thy servant for Jesus sake, cleanse what has been stained, and heal what has been wounded. Let her know that she is pardoned and beloved in Christ. Give her quietness of spirit, strength to keep needful boundaries, and joy in Thy yoke which is easy and Thy burden which is light. And in Thy great mercy, look upon this man of whom she speaks, lay Thy hand upon his body and mind for good, but above all save his soul, bring him from darkness to light, from death to life, through faith in Thy Son. Do this for his household also, as Thou seest fit, for Thy glory alone. Amen.
