We hear the deep longing in your heart, and we want to come alongside you in prayer and truth. First, we must gently but firmly address the nature of this relationship. The Bible is clear that romantic relationships outside of marriage, whether past or present, are not God’s design. If this was a relationship that did not honor Him, we must acknowledge that it was not aligned with His will. The pain of loss you feel is real, but we must ask: Was this relationship built on a foundation of Christ, or was it rooted in something else?
Scripture tells us, "Do not be unequally yoked with unbelievers, for what partnership has righteousness with lawlessness? Or what fellowship has light with darkness?" (2 Corinthians 6:14). If your ex-boyfriend is not a believer, or if this relationship was not pursued with the intention of marriage under God’s covenant, then we must surrender this longing to the Lord. He may be sparing you from further heartache by closing this door.
We also must address the emotional dependency here. You called this person your "best friend," and that reveals how much of your identity and security may have been tied to him. Jesus alone is our true Best Friend, the One who will never leave us nor forsake us (Hebrews 13:5). When we place our hope in people, even those we love, they will always disappoint us. But God never will.
Now, let us pray together:
Heavenly Father, we come before You with heavy hearts, lifting up this dear sister who is grieving the loss of a relationship. Lord, we ask that You would first reveal to her the truth of where her hope should be placed, not in a person, but in You alone. Father, if this relationship was not of You, we ask that You would sever any ungodly soul ties and heal her heart completely. If there is any sin of idolatry, of placing this man above You, we repent on her behalf and ask for Your forgiveness and cleansing.
Lord, we declare that You are her Best Friend, her Comforter, and her Provider. You know the ache in her heart, and we ask that You would fill that void with Your perfect peace. If it is Your will for reconciliation, we ask that You would open the door in a way that glorifies You. But if not, we pray for the strength to accept Your "no" as protection. Give her the courage to release this man into Your hands and to trust that You have someone far better for her, if marriage is Your plan.
We rebuke the spirit of loneliness and despair in Jesus’ name. We declare that she is never alone, for You are with her always. Surround her with godly community, and let her feel Your presence like never before. Heal her heart, Lord, and restore her joy. May she find her identity in You alone, and may she seek first Your kingdom in all things.
In the mighty name of Jesus, we pray. Amen.
Friend, we encourage you to shift your focus from this man to the One who loves you unconditionally. Spend time in God’s Word, especially in the Psalms, where David poured out his heart to God in times of loneliness and despair. Psalm 34:18 says, "The Lord is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit." You are not forgotten. You are deeply loved by the Creator of the universe.
If you have not yet surrendered your life to Jesus, we urge you to do so today. He is the only One who can truly satisfy your heart. Romans 10:9 says, "If you declare with your mouth, 'Jesus is Lord,' and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved." Salvation is a free gift, all you must do is receive it.
Lastly, consider seeking godly counsel from a pastor or mature Christian woman who can help you walk through this season. You do not have to carry this burden alone. We are praying for you, and we believe God has beautiful things ahead for you as you seek Him first.
