Debilitating depression with nightmares

Please pray for the Spirit of the Lord Jesus Christ and his warrior Angel's to break this debilitating depression that won't quit. I started going back to church again and now the depression is worse. I know our battl6is not against flesh and blood. I just feel like I have had the wind knocked out of me and I can't get anything done. I sleep too much and have nightmares. When I wake up I'm exhausted and weak. Please pray for me. Thank you so much for your prayers.

We hear your cry and we stand with you in this heavy battle, and we thank you for reaching out and for returning to fellowship with believers even while you feel the wind knocked out of you. We know this exhaustion, sleeping too much yet waking weak, and the torment of nightmares can feel overwhelming, and we want you to know you are not alone and you are not forgotten by God.

You are right to discern that our wrestling is not against flesh and blood, but against the principalities, against the powers, against the world’s rulers of the darkness of this age, and against the spiritual forces of wickedness in the heavenly places as Ephesians 6:12 teaches. The enemy often presses harder when a soul turns back toward Christ and His church, but we take comfort that greater is He who is in us than he who is in the world. The Lord is close to those who are of a broken heart, and saves those who are of a crushed spirit as Psalm 34:18 reminds us, and He heals the broken in heart, and binds up their wounds as Psalm 147:3 promises. We also hear your honesty about feeling unable to get anything done, and we are reminded that God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power, love, and self-control as 2 Timothy 1:7 says, and He calls us to cast our cares on Him because He cares for us.

We lift you before our Father together in the mighty name of Jesus Christ.

Father, in the name of Jesus Christ Your Son, we come before Your throne of grace and we lift up this dear one who is crushed by debilitating depression and tormented by nightmares. Lord, we ask that You break this oppression by the power of Your Holy Spirit and by the authority of Jesus who has triumphed over all darkness. We ask You to command Your holy angels to encamp around this child of Yours and to drive back every spirit of heaviness, fear, and torment. We pray You would lift this weight that has knocked the wind out of them and breathe Your life and strength back into their body, mind, and spirit. Grant peaceful sleep, for we know You give Your beloved sleep and that we can lie down and sleep in peace, for You alone make us dwell in safety as Psalm 4:8 declares. Replace nightmares with Your peace which surpasses all understanding, which will guard their heart and thoughts in Christ Jesus as Philippians 4:7 promises. Heal the exhaustion and weakness, renew their strength, and let them know Your presence is near. Help them to continue to draw close to You and to Your people in church, and do not let the enemy use this warfare to pull them away. In Jesus name we pray, amen.

We encourage you to remain steadfast in returning to church even when it feels harder, for God uses the fellowship of believers to strengthen us and to remind us of truth when our feelings overwhelm us. We encourage you to bring this struggle into the light with a trusted pastor or mature believer who can pray with you regularly and walk with you, and if this depression remains heavy, to also seek wise and godly counsel and medical care, for God can use many means to bring healing. Before sleep, we encourage you to pray aloud in the name of Jesus, to invite His Spirit to guard your mind, to play worship or speak Scripture over your room, and to meditate on promises such as Isaiah 41:10, Don’t you be afraid, for I am with you. Don’t be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you. Yes, I will help you. Yes, I will uphold you with the right hand of my righteousness. And Psalm 42:11, Why are you in despair, my soul Why are you disturbed within me Hope in God For I shall still praise him for the saving help of his presence.

We pray you will feel the Lord lifting you day by day, that your sleep will become restful, your strength renewed, and your joy restored as you keep seeking Him. We continue to hold you in prayer and we thank Jesus that nothing can separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord as Romans 8:38-39 assures us.

Thank you for writing so honestly. We hear how heavy and draining this season has been, that wind knocked out feeling, sleeping a lot yet waking exhausted and weak, and the nightmares that leave you worn out. It makes sense you feel discouraged, especially when you took the brave step of going back to church and found the depression felt even heavier.

Please know that step back toward fellowship was not wasted, even if it does not feel better right away. When we have been running on empty for a long time, even good changes can feel exhausting at first.

We are praying for you, for steadier rest and for strength for each day as you seek the Lord. Alongside prayer, it would be good to let someone close to you know how you are sleeping and how weak you feel in the mornings, and to reach out to your pastor and to your doctor or a trusted counselor about the depression and nightmares so you have support in person and not just in prayer.

Father, we bring our friend before You in Jesus name. You see the exhaustion, the heavy nights and the tired mornings. We ask for Your nearness and peace to surround them, for rest that restores, and for wisdom and help from caring people around them. Lift the weight they feel and guide their next steps day by day. Amen.

Your honest and weary cry has been heard, and we have carried it before the Lord with you. To feel the wind knocked out of you, to sleep and yet wake exhausted and weak, to be vexed with nightmares and a depression that will not quit, this is a sore trial, and we do not make light of it.

Do not marvel that the burden should feel heavier since you have turned your face back toward the house of God. Our weakness is often felt most keenly when we are in a new position. When David was newly anointed, he cried, I am this day weak, though anointed king. Wonder not that old Satan should be more than a match for a young Christian, or for one newly returned to the battle. The adversary rages most when a soul escapes his quiet possession and seeks Christ again. Your going back to church is not the cause of your sorrow, but the occasion for the enemy to contend for you. This itself may be a token that you are on the right road.

There are weaknesses that belong to our nature as God appointed it, infirmities of body and mind which are not sinful in themselves, and there is a weakness that comes from our fallen nature. In either case the promise stands, out of weakness were made strong. That is God's cure for man's weakness. He does not despise the weak, but He beautifies the meek with salvation, and that very softness which men count as weakness becomes the background upon which He throws His brightness.

We have known this heaviness ourselves, that dull and dead and heavy frame when soul and body both seem bowed down, and we confess with shame that we have thought it was the weather or the body only. But we have found one cure, and that is nearness to God in Christ Jesus. David himself, that eminent saint and champion, fell into great depression of spirit and hastily said in his haste, I am cut off from before thine eyes. We are glad that such a piece of human weakness stands upon record, for it is a comfort to us little folks to perceive that the champions were men of like passions with ourselves. As a bee sucks honey out of nettles, so faith may suck comfort even out of David's failing. He questioned God's tender love, and then he heartily abhorred the thought and loathed himself for it, and the Lord looked upon him in mercy.

So we would say to you, let not your depression prove that you are cast away. When you have met with Christians who are not happy, you will find their depression is often only for a time under very severe trial. The Lord permits the trial for a season, that natural strength may be toned down and natural weakness may become the channel for spiritual strength. Whatever is our strength in the flesh is sure to be our weakness in the spirit, but our weakness, owned and brought to Christ, becomes the vehicle for His strength.

Therefore, do not trust to yourself to turn away your own eyes or to lift your own burden. Look out of yourself to Christ alone, who bore our sorrows and was acquainted with our grief. He is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart. Keep to the means of grace though you feel little strength in them. Continue in the assembly of the saints, continue in prayer even when it is but a groan, continue in the Word even when your eyes are dim. Tell the Lord Jesus all, as you have told us.

We now pray for you:

O Lord God, our Father, look in great mercy upon Thy dear afflicted child who is pressed down with depression and broken sleep and fearful dreams. Thou knowest what it is to be heavy and sore amazed. Have compassion upon this weak one, who feels unable to do anything and wakes weary. Break, we beseech Thee, the power of darkness that would harass and accuse, for our battle is not against flesh and blood. Let the Spirit of the Lord Jesus Christ rest upon this soul. Send help from Thy sanctuary and strengthen out of Zion. Turn away the eyes from vanity and quicken according to Thy word. Out of this weakness make strong, that Thy power may rest upon Thy servant. Give quiet sleep free from terror, and waking hours with renewed strength to look unto Jesus. Keep this soul abiding in Christ, till joy return, joy that abideth forever in those who put their trust in Thee. We ask this in the precious name of Jesus Christ our Lord, who alone is our salvation and our hope. Amen.

Be not weary in well doing. The Lord is near, and He will not forsake the work of His own hands.

Why doesn't God love me? Why won't he forgive me? Why does He continue to punish me for all my mistakes, bad decisions? Why does He keep punishing me for all the times I lossed faith? People lose faith all the time in hard times, tough times, and everyday struggles. Where is the forgiveness...
