Your prayer as a mother for your daughters is heard, and your loving anxiety for them is no small burden. The Lord knows the care you carry for these almost grown children whom you have committed to Jesus, and He invites you to cast that care wholly upon Him.
You are called at this hour to that blessed grace which is the root of all peace, to trust Him and only trust Him. You say, Lord, hear my prayer for my daughters, and so He will, but you must not say, Lord, I cannot rest until I see the answer with my eyes. That would be to make a god of your feelings and to trust your own sight rather than His faithful promise. He is a God ready to pardon, ready to provide, waiting to forgive and to bless all those that trust His Son. My soul, I charge you, trust your Savior and raise no further question, but let the matter be assured and established within you. Trust Him as you sink and you shall swim. Trust Him in this waiting and you shall live.
For this is indeed a waiting time, and we have a waiting God. The prophet says, Therefore will the Lord wait, that He may be gracious unto you. He has not forgotten your daughters. He waits that He may do them good in His own perfect season, and His waiting will turn to a glorious transaction of grace when the time of love is come. And you are called to be a waiting people, not waiting in despair nor even in hesitation, but waiting in hope, a joyous and assured hope. As the psalmist says, Wait on the Lord, be of good courage, and He shall strengthen thine heart. Waiting upon God is the way to renew your strength until you mount up with wings as eagles. It breeds peace within the soul, and when a man is perfectly at rest within, he cares little for trials or foes. So wait thou only upon God, for your expectation is from Him. He is at the helm and His hand will steer the course of your daughters' lives far better than any anxious thought of yours could do.
Remember also what is written concerning Sarah and her daughters, whose daughters you are as long as you do well, and are not afraid with any amazement. Be not afraid with any amazement about their years or their future. To do well is to walk in faith and holiness before the Lord, to honor your spiritual parentage and maintain the high prestige of the elect family. Pray therefore first that your daughters may be true daughters of Sarah, trusting in the Lord forever, for in the Lord Jehovah is everlasting strength. If they are Christ's, they are already joined to the best of husbands, for our Lord is married unto His people, and that marriage is cemented by mutual love and made one by faith. Faith is the golden ring which is the token of the marriage bond. Let their first and chief desire be to be found faithful to Him.
And concerning marriage itself, hold fast what Scripture teaches, that it is a holy covenant of one man and one woman for life, ordained of God and cemented by mutual love, wherein the two become one. It is not to be entered lightly nor outside the Lord's will, but in prudence and uprightness, relying simply and entirely upon Him. We are not to be idle, nor to be rash, but to act wisely and to trust our affairs in our Father's hands.
We will pray with you to this end, that the living God, who is a thinking God, an active God, a working, personal God with a great warm loving heart, would keep your daughters in His fear, cause them to do well and to be without fear, and if it be His gracious will, would in His own time provide for each of them a godly husband, a man who loves Christ and will love her as Christ loves the Church, for a lifelong covenant as He has ordained. And if He tarries, that He would give to you and to them contentment to wait upon Him, knowing that He withholds no good thing from them that walk uprightly.
Let us pray. O Lord, Thou living God in whom we trust, look upon this mother and her daughters. Thou knowest their names and their years and every desire of their hearts. Give them first to trust Thy Son wholly for salvation, and then to wait patiently upon Thee for all temporal mercies. Strengthen this mother's heart, take away amazement and fear, and let her rest in Thy everlasting strength. Guide her daughters in Thy way, keep them pure and steadfast, doing well and walking in Thy truth. In Thy wisdom and mercy provide for them according to Thy perfect will, and let Thy name be praised whether Thou givest or withholdest, for Thou doest all things well. Hear us for Jesus Christ's sake. Amen.
