Our Father in Heaven, We ask for grace to take hold of one thing without letting go of the other, Ecclesiastes 7:18, to continue to intercede for my distant matrimonial's full, authentic repentance to life and full trust in Christ and be regenerated, and the prodigy to be saved early, Rom 10:1, and protected and directed into the love and character of Jesus Christ, nourished on Your Word), 2 Tim 3:15, Yet ability to PRIMARILY FOCUS on THE NEW, Isa 42:9, Isa 43:19, Isa 48:6.

So we ask You open a door for Heaven, Nearness, and doors to express the overflow of the Holy Spirit to Bible Studies, Prayer Meetings and for the lost to hear the Gospel, kindly work while we keep still, Exodus 14:14, and empower us to glorify You, to image God, which were it possible, we would not ask and trust You for it. I ask for grace to set all things in order, Tit 1:5, strengthen and finish each task, Rev 3:2, and meet every pressing need, Tit 3:14.

Help our running to be in a way that we might win, 1 Cor 9:24, forgetting what lies behind and pressing toward the upward call, Phil 3:13-14, laying aside encumbrances and diversions that distract us from the primary task of Your call and commission to abide in Your Word and make disciples by propagating all You've commanded, that we might run the race that is personally set out before each of us, Heb 12:1-2... Thank You for the Your love and leadership, the fellowship of abiding in Christ and guidance of The Holy Spirit, John 10:3-4, Rom 8:14, grace to intercede for and forget the past AND for grace to navigate going forward, James 1:5, new evangelism, encouragement, discipleship, fellowship with The Body and Bride of Christ, and formal study, Ecclesiastes 7:18. We come before the throne of grace with hearts full of gratitude for God’s daily mercies and faithfulness, just as Lamentations 3:23 declares, "They are new every morning; great is your faithfulness." It is a profound truth that His mercies never cease, and His compassions never fail. We lift up this prayer with reverence, acknowledging that our focus must always be on God’s will and His purposes, both in the old things that require our attention and the new things He is unfolding before us.

We recognize the tension between holding onto past concerns, such as the salvation and repentance of loved ones, and embracing the new works God is calling us to. It is a delicate balance, as Ecclesiastes 7:18 reminds us, "It is good that you should take hold of this; yes, also from that don’t withdraw your hand; for he who fears God will come out of them all." We must continue to intercede for those who are lost, especially for the salvation of family members, as Romans 10:1 urges us, "Brothers, my heart’s desire and my prayer to God is for Israel, that they may be saved." Yet, we must also press forward into the new things God is doing, as Isaiah 42:9 proclaims, "Behold, the former things have happened, and I declare new things. I tell you about them before they come up."

Father, we ask for the grace to set our hearts and minds on the new works You have prepared for us. Open doors for the Gospel, as Revelation 3:7-8 promises, "He who is holy, he who is true, he who has the key of David, he who opens and no one can shut, and who shuts and no one opens, says these things: ‘I know your works. Behold, I have set before you an open door, which no one can shut, that you may know that I have loved you.’" Let us walk through these doors with boldness, empowered by Your Spirit, to share the Good News and make disciples as You have commanded.

We also ask for wisdom and strength to fulfill our duties with excellence, as Titus 3:14 instructs, "Let our people also learn to maintain good works for necessary uses, that they may not be unfruitful." Help us to set things in order, as Titus 1:5 commands, and to finish the tasks You have given us, as Revelation 3:2 encourages, "Wake up, and strengthen the things that remain, which were ready to die, for I have found no works of yours perfected before my God." May we run the race set before us with endurance, laying aside every weight and sin that so easily entangles us, as Hebrews 12:1-2 exhorts.

Lord, we confess that our focus can sometimes be divided, and we ask for Your help to prioritize what truly matters. Let us not be distracted by the cares of this world but instead press toward the upward call of God in Christ Jesus, as Philippians 3:13-14 urges, "Brothers, I don’t regard myself as yet having taken hold, but one thing I do: forgetting the things which are behind, and stretching forward to the things which are before, I press on toward the goal for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus." May our running be in such a way that we might win the prize, as 1 Corinthians 9:24 challenges us.

We also ask for protection from temptation, sin, and the schemes of the evil one. Deliver us from evil, as Matthew 6:13 teaches, and keep us from the influence of those who would lead us astray, as 2 Thessalonians 3:2 warns. Guard our hearts and minds, that we may walk in purity and holiness, reflecting the character of Christ in all we do.

Father, we thank You for the fellowship of the Body of Christ and the guidance of the Holy Spirit. May we abide in Christ, as John 10:3-4 describes, "The gatekeeper opens the gate for him, and the sheep listen to his voice. He calls his own sheep by name and leads them out. Whenever he brings out his own sheep, he goes before them, and the sheep follow him, for they know his voice." Lead us, Holy Spirit, as Romans 8:14 promises, "For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, these are children of God."

We ask all these things in the mighty name of Jesus Christ, the name above all names, the only name by which we can be saved. There is no other name under heaven given to mankind by which we must be saved, as Acts 4:12 declares. It is through Jesus alone that we have access to the Father, and it is by His blood that we are redeemed. May our lives bring glory to Him as we walk in obedience and faith.

We pray for grace to navigate the path ahead, for open doors of evangelism, encouragement, discipleship, and fellowship within the Body of Christ. Equip us for every good work, as 2 Timothy 3:15-17 teaches, "From infancy, you have known the holy Scriptures which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith, which is in Christ Jesus. Every Scripture is God-breathed and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for instruction in righteousness, that each person who belongs to God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work."

Lord, we surrender our past, our present, and our future into Your hands. May we trust in Your sovereignty and rest in Your promises, knowing that You are faithful to complete the work You have begun in us. Strengthen us to care for the flock among us, as Acts 20:28 instructs, "Take heed, therefore, to yourselves, and to all the flock, in which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers, to shepherd the assembly of the Lord and God which he purchased with his own blood." May we be found faithful in all You have called us to do, for Your glory and the advancement of Your kingdom.

We hear in your prayer the real tension of a heart that refuses to let go of intercession while also longing to run fully into the new things God is doing. That’s not a contradiction to be solved; it’s a maturity to be navigated. You’ve already named the key from Ecclesiastes: taking hold of one without letting go of the other. The grace you’re asking for is exactly what’s needed, not permission to stop caring, but the capacity to carry that care in its proper place while your hands stay free for the primary work right in front of you.

What might help is giving that ongoing intercession a specific, bounded home so it doesn’t quietly colonize all the other hours. A brief, fixed window each day, perhaps just a few minutes in the morning, where you deliberately lift your former matrimonial and the prodigy before the Lord, then mentally close the door and turn to the flock among you and the open doors for the gospel. The great mercy of Lamentations 3:23 is that God’s faithfulness is fresh every morning, which means yesterday’s burdens can be entrusted to today’s mercies and left on the altar, not carried in a backpack all day.

Father, we join this prayer and ask for the salvation and full regeneration of the ones who are far from You, draw them with cords they cannot explain. At the same time, steady this heart and mind to focus mainly on the new doors You are opening, and grant wisdom to set things in order without distraction. Protect from the evil one and from temptation, and move mightily in Bible studies, prayer gatherings, and every conversation with the lost. In Jesus’ name, amen.

You have a holy and scriptural desire here, to take hold of one thing without letting go of the other. Yet observe the snare in it: your heart may become so divided between the old and the new that you accomplish neither. The apostle who said, "Forgetting what lies behind and straining toward what is ahead," understood this warfare well. To pray for a distant soul is a duty; to languish in it until it paralyzes present service is a fault. You are not called to forget that you intercede, but you are called to go forth unto Christ outside the camp, bearing His reproach, and your eye must be fixed on the new thing He is doing now.

If I were to go out tomorrow by sea, I should not walk on board a steamboat and then enquire, "Where are you going?" The captain would think me a crazy fellow if I embarked before I knew where the vessel was going. And yet this is how many Christians try to run, looking over the stern at the wake behind them while the prow is unregarded. The Lord is doing a new thing; do you not perceive it? He is making a way in the wilderness and streams in the wasteland. But you cannot walk in that new way if your eyes are forever cast backward. By faith Abraham went out, not knowing where he went, and you must do the same with your affections. The intercession remains, but it must be carried in your heart, not dragged as a weight upon your feet.

Go in peace. The woman who washed the Savior's feet with her tears heard that word, and it lasted her all her life. She went back to ordinary duties, to household cares, and she went in peace. So must you. You have cast that distant soul upon the Lord; now go attend to the flock among you. Do not go among them disturbed and fluttered, but sing to yourself softly, "My heart is resting, O my God!" A vessel must be made for motion; "there go the ships." And how do they go? According to the wind, guided by helm and chart. You have the Spirit's wind; you have the Word as chart. Do not lie forever at anchor in the harbor of old griefs and longings. Spread your sails to the present breeze of duty. Some vessels, with the very same wind, make more way than others because of their build. Ask the Lord to build you for swift obedience now.

Beware of the murmuring that breeds serpents. The Israelites grew discouraged because the way was long and the promised land delayed. They looked back at Egypt; they looked around at the wilderness; they did not look up to the bronze serpent lifted for their healing. Your daily duties and new openings are your path to Canaan. If you despise them because they are not the answers you crave for your former things, you will be bitten by fiery discouragement and your steps will falter. Turn your eyes to Christ; take the Word of God as your only standard; where it leads you, there go, no matter who or what goes with you.

Do not attempt to mend the old leaf; you need a new book altogether. You may set all things in order outwardly, but the heart must first be kept in order by the peace of God. Christ says, "Behold, I make all things new", new songs, new duties, new evangelism, new fellowship. These are not diversions from your prayers; they are the very answers to them. A running that wins the prize looks forward, not over the shoulder. Lay aside every encumbrance, and run the race personally set before you. Leave the former things with God, and step through the open door He sets before you. He will do both: guard the distant ones, and establish the work of your hands here. Go in peace, and let the ships sail.

You bring a soul weighed down with many cares, a heart stretched between remembrance and hope. This is not a strange affliction, but a common snare. You ask for grace to hold both the past and the new, to intercede yet press forward. The apostle himself groaned over his kinsmen according to the flesh, yet he did not let that anguish become a chain to his feet. He ran, and his running was not in vain.

The cross has made all things new. What is the old dispensation to us? What is any former state compared to the new creature we become in Christ? The past, with its failures and its ties, must not bind us as if we still lived under its shadow. You pray for the salvation of one bound to you by an old bond, and this is good, for God desires all to be saved. But do you not see that the very power of that prayer comes from your own firm standing in the new? A lamp burning steadily gives light, but if you keep opening the door to the winds of anxious thought, the flame will flicker and may be quenched. Quench not the Spirit by pouring upon it the dust of worldly cares. Your first duty is to keep your own vessel full of oil, your own lamp trimmed and burning. Then you can rightly pray for others.

You fear you will let go of one thing if you take hold of the other. But in the economy of grace, we often hold best by not clutching. Commend that person to God with a brief, fervent sigh, and then turn your face forward. Did not Elijah leave all to follow the still small voice? Do not let an open door of the past become a draught that puts out your light. Close the door of your lips against endless rehearsing of what is gone; shut the eye and ear to vain imaginations. The enemy would love nothing more than to keep you circling the ruins of what was, so that you never build anything new.

The race is set before you, not behind you. Stretch out toward the prize. The signs of the times tell us the Judge is at the door. Can we afford to waste strength on what God has already begun to redeem, or what He may yet redeem in His own time? Your task is to run in such a way that you may win. Are you willing to lay aside every weight? Some weights are not sins, but they are distractions that make you stumble. Even a lawful grief can become an encumbrance if it keeps you from the work He has given you now: the flock among you, the open door for the gospel, the duties of love that need your hands today.

Grace is sufficient. The grace that called you was not of merit but of mercy. That same grace will perfect what it began. Let this sink into your heart: you are not the savior of that soul; Christ is. You are a vessel, not the fountain. Pour out your request for that person’s true repentance, then leave it at the feet of Him who is rich in mercy. Do not measure your own faithfulness by the visible outcome there. Your faithfulness is proven in the quiet, daily doing of the next duty, the kind word, the patient endurance, the secret prayer, the attention to the word and to teaching.

So set all things in order, not with a frantic haste, but with the settled peace of one who knows that the Lord will fight for you while you hold your peace. The new things I am doing, says the Lord, do you not perceive them? They spring forth; will you not see? Take up the tasks before you, forgetting what lies behind. The earth will soon shake, the heavens will be rolled up, and only what is built on the rock will stand. Let your building be of gold and silver, not of the hay and stubble of excessive earthly attachments and fears.

Pray, then, for grace to navigate forward. Ask for wisdom, and it will be given. But then go forward. Do not wait to feel a perfect release; act in the faith that He who began a good work in you will carry it to completion. The door is open; walk through it. And as you go, keep the fear of God as a guard upon your senses. Shut the doors against the evil one. So shall you glorify Him who called you out of darkness into His marvelous light, and you will find that in losing your life you have kept it unto life eternal.

Your prayer reveals a heart earnestly seeking to stand in a difficult place, holding onto intercession for those far off while sensing God’s call to press into the new things He is unfolding right before you. That very tension is a sacred one, and I believe it is anchored in the balance Scripture calls us to walk in.

The request for grace “to take hold of one thing without letting go of the other” is exactly what Ecclesiastes speaks to. You do not have to abandon the cry for a former spouse’s true repentance and the early salvation of your prodigy to embrace the present duties and fresh works. The same hand of grace that fuels your prayers for them can build you up for the flock beside you. The trap most of us fall into is letting the heartbreak over what is undone behind us drain all the strength needed for what God sets directly in front of us.

Think about the command to forget what lies behind. That does not mean the people in your past become nothing to you. It means you stop letting the sorrow over their state, or even the nostalgia for what used to be, hold you back from running the race set before you now. A person can be so fixated on what they wish God would do in someone else’s life years ago that they miss the open door of the gospel He is swinging wide open today. You asked for open doors. Keep your eyes locked on Him, and you will walk through them, even while standing still in the spirit of Exodus.

That bringing together of the new is what it means to live in the dispensation of His grace. Paul proved his ministry not by fretting over those who clung to a dead mix of law and faith, but by commending himself through pureness, long-suffering, and the unfeigned love he poured out daily. You glorify Him by focusing on your own teaching, your own abiding, and the completion of the tasks directly at hand. Do not let the things of the past become a reproach that blames the ministry. Let the Holy Spirit do that interior work in their hearts while you tend to the “new man” He is building in your own sphere.

The work of the enemy is often to keep us living in a past we cannot change, whether that is failure or longing, so that we end up discouraged and useless for the present. The word you have received about forgetting the past and navigating forward is life-giving. It aligns with the glorious mystery that when God creates all things new, that former sorrow is not brought to mind to torment us any longer. We do not rest on the accolades of old victories, nor do we remain paralyzed by the pain of old departures.

So yes, ask Him to safeguard your children and to break through with conviction and regeneration in a distant life. That is a right prayer. But then step fully into the primary call. Set things in order. Finish each task. Let your running to win be a race of liberty, not a stumble over the wreckage behind you. The safest place for your heart is to be so consumed with the image of the new heaven and the new earth, and with bringing others into that fellowship now, that you find the grace to do both without being destroyed by either. Hold on in prayer, release the weight, and walk forward.
