Good and Faithful Servant
Please pray for me about this: my boyfriend is having a biopsy in a week or so. He lives a few hours away and I want to go care for him afterward. The problem is that he would need care at night the first few days and I wouldn't be able to stay the night with him as we are unmarried and there's no one that can do so with me. But I really want to help and come see him. Please pray for God to allow everything to work out and according to His will. Pray that my boyfriend would be understanding that I can't spend the night at his house as he is a professing Christian but lives a more worldly life and is involved in false teachings. Recently, we also slipped into sexual sin in our long distance relationship (it was my fault it started). Thank you.

We hear your heart, dear sister, and we lift this situation before the Lord with great care and concern. First, we want to acknowledge your desire to honor God in your relationship, even as you seek to care for your boyfriend during this time of medical need. Your willingness to serve him is commendable, but we must also address the areas where this situation does not align with biblical principles, so that we may pray and counsel according to God’s will.

The Bible is clear that sexual intimacy is reserved for marriage alone. In 1 Corinthians 6:18-20, we are told, "Flee sexual immorality! ‘Every sin that a man does is outside the body,’ but he who commits sexual immorality sins against his own body. Or don’t you know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God? You are not your own, for you were bought with a price. Therefore glorify God in your body and in your spirit, which are God’s." The fact that you have acknowledged this sin and taken responsibility for it is a step toward repentance, and we praise God for that. However, we must also rebuke this sin and encourage you to turn away from it completely. Confess it before the Lord, seek His forgiveness, and commit to walking in purity moving forward. This is not just for your sake, but for the sake of your brother in Christ as well. Galatians 6:1 reminds us, "Brothers, even if a man is caught in some fault, you who are spiritual must restore such a one in a spirit of gentleness; looking to yourself so that you also aren’t tempted."

Your concern about staying overnight with your boyfriend is wise and reflects a desire to honor God’s design for relationships. The Bible teaches that we are to flee from even the appearance of evil (1 Thessalonians 5:22). Staying alone with him overnight, especially in a vulnerable state after his procedure, could easily lead to further temptation and compromise. We commend you for recognizing this and seeking to uphold godly boundaries. However, we must also address the deeper issue here: your relationship is not built on the foundation of Christ as it should be. Your boyfriend professes faith but lives a worldly life and is involved in false teachings. This is a serious matter, as 2 Corinthians 6:14-15 warns, "Don’t be unequally yoked with unbelievers, for what fellowship have righteousness and iniquity? Or what fellowship has light with darkness? What agreement has Christ with Belial? Or what portion has a believer with an unbeliever?" Even if he professes Christ, his life does not reflect a true relationship with Him. This is a red flag that must be addressed.

We urge you to prayerfully consider whether this relationship is honoring to God. Are you both pursuing holiness, accountability, and a shared commitment to biblical truth? If not, this relationship may be leading you both away from God’s best for your lives. Proverbs 13:20 says, "He who walks with wise men grows wise, but a companion of fools suffers harm." We must ask: Is this relationship drawing you closer to Christ, or is it pulling you away from Him?

Now, let us pray for you and your boyfriend:

Heavenly Father, we come before You with heavy hearts, lifting up this sister and her boyfriend to You. Lord, we ask that You would be with him as he prepares for his biopsy. Give him peace, comfort, and healing according to Your will. We pray that You would surround him with Your presence and remind him of Your love and sovereignty over his life. Father, we also ask that You would work in his heart to draw him closer to You. If he is truly Yours, convict him of the false teachings he has embraced and lead him into all truth. If he is not Yours, we pray that You would open his eyes to the gospel and save him, that he may know the power of Christ’s resurrection and the hope of eternal life.

Lord, we also lift up this sister to You. We ask that You would give her wisdom and discernment as she navigates this relationship. Help her to see clearly whether this relationship is honoring to You or if it is a stumbling block in her walk with Christ. Give her the strength to set godly boundaries and the courage to walk away if this relationship is not aligned with Your will. Father, we ask that You would forgive her for the sexual sin she has confessed, and we pray that You would cleanse her heart and renew her mind. Help her to flee from temptation and to pursue purity in all areas of her life. Surround her with godly friends and mentors who can encourage her and hold her accountable.

Lord, we pray that You would provide a way for her to care for her boyfriend after his procedure without compromising her convictions. If it is Your will, open doors for her to serve him in a way that honors You. If it is not Your will, give her peace to accept that and trust in Your plan. Above all, Father, we ask that You would be glorified in this situation. May Your name be lifted high, and may Your will be done in both of their lives. We ask all of this in the mighty name of Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior. Amen.

In closing, dear sister, we want to encourage you to seek the Lord with all your heart. Spend time in His Word and in prayer, asking Him to reveal His will for this relationship. Surround yourself with godly counsel, people who can speak truth into your life and hold you accountable. If this relationship is not honoring to God, we urge you to consider whether it is time to step away. It may be painful, but God’s plans for you are good, and His ways are higher than our own (Isaiah 55:8-9). Trust in Him, and He will direct your paths (Proverbs 3:5-6). If you have not already, we also encourage you to find a local church where you can grow in your faith and find support. You are not alone in this journey, and God is faithful to complete the work He has begun in you (Philippians 1:6).

We are glad you wrote in about this. It can be lonely to want to care for someone while also trying to honor what you know is right. Let us encourage you to let yourself off the hook for the overnight piece. You can still be a real help by being there during the day, bringing meals, handling errands, picking up prescriptions, and sitting with him while he rests after the procedure. For the nights, one practical next step is to reach out to his local church or a trustworthy friend near him and ask if someone can check in or be available on call. If there truly is no one, his doctor’s office may be able to tell you about visiting nurse services or home health care for the first day or two.

We also hear the weight you are carrying about recent choices and about his spiritual influences. Please consider talking with a mature Christian woman you trust, not to be scolded, but to have someone praying with you and helping you think clearly. Accountability can make these days feel less isolating.

Father, we ask for wisdom for the medical team and a good outcome for this biopsy. Provide the practical help he needs at night, and give both of them hearts that turn toward You. Strengthen their desire for purity, and grant clarity about every next step. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Your request has been heard and we take it before the Lord with care for you and for this young man. We commend the conviction you have shown in determining not to spend the night in his house while you are unmarried. That resolve is right and good, for Scripture calls us to keep ourselves unspotted from the world and to keep the marriage bed undefiled. Purity and charity must go together, and you are right not to put charity toward him in a form that would violate purity before God. To visit in the day, to arrange proper help through family, church members or medical care for the night hours, is the way of wisdom and holiness.

You have spoken honestly about falling into sexual sin and you have taken blame upon yourself. We must deal faithfully with this before God. Sin is not to be excused and true repentance is more than sorrow for consequences or a transient regret while the pain is felt. True repentance is a hatred of sin as sin, a turning from it with purpose of heart, a determination in the strength of God to forsake it. It turns a person inside out and purges the innermost part of the soul, so that even if sin could be made profitable and sweet we would not have it. It is not a compensation for sin that allows us to continue in it, but a godly sorrow that leads us to forsake it and to bring forth works meet for repentance. Such repentance is inseparable from faith in the Lord Jesus Christ, who alone is set forth to be the propitiation for sin. You cannot make recompense to God by regret or by future reformation. Your only hope, and his only hope, is to look to Jesus Christ who bore the sins of His people in His own body on the tree. If you have come to Him by conviction of sin, repentance and faith, you will find that repentance stands at the Cross and sees sin forgiven and then hates sin all the more because it slew the Saviour and because God is so gracious as to forgive it.

You also tell us that he professes Christ but lives a more worldly life and is involved in false teachings. This is a matter for grave and prayerful consideration. The Scriptures never suppose that we can wallow in the mire of open or secret sin and yet belong to Christ. If we walk in the light as He is in the light, the blood of Jesus Christ cleanses us from all sin, but to cling to sin and love it will bring forth death. A profession without a changed life, and a teaching that does not accord with the apostles doctrine, are warning signs. Salvation is through Jesus Christ alone, and marriage is a lifelong covenant of one man and one woman in which alone sexual union and living together belong. A relationship that is unequally yoked in faith and in practice will not lead you toward holiness. We urge you to seek godly counsel from your pastor and from mature believers who know you, to test every teaching by the Word of God, and to ask whether this relationship is leading you both nearer to Christ or drawing you away.

For his coming biopsy we will pray. We will not ask God to bless what He calls sin, but we will ask Him to do what is holy and good according to His perfect will. We will pray that the Lord would be merciful to this young man in his body, that He would grant skill to physicians and peace under trial, and above all that He would grant true repentance and faith if he does not yet know Christ in truth. We will pray that God would give you strength to stand firm in purity even if it is not understood by others, and that He would provide proper care for the night hours through appropriate means so that you are not tempted nor put in a position that compromises your testimony. We will pray that the Lord would give you both a clear hatred of the sin into which you have fallen, a lasting and practical turning from it, and a fresh sight of the goodness of God that leads to repentance.

May the Lord lead you to mourn sin because it is sin against so holy and good a God, and to fly anew to Christ for washing. Wash you thoroughly and cleanse you from sin, and keep you by His grace. If you have not already, confess this sin plainly to the Lord, turn from it decisively, make no provision for it, and walk in accountability and light. Trust not in your own resolve but in the finished work of Christ and the power of His Spirit to keep you.

May God in Jesus' name answer your prayer request according to God's perfect love, wisdom, will, timing, grace, and mercy. God is so in love with you. Be Encouraged!

Heal Me Lord Jesus Spirit, Soul, And Body

Thank you for sharing this so honestly and for wanting to honor God in a difficult situation. Your desire to help your boyfriend after his biopsy is good and caring, and your conviction not to spend the night with him while you are unmarried is right and pleasing to God. Even when it feels costly or when others may not understand, choosing to keep sex and living together within the lifelong covenant of marriage between one man and one woman protects both of you and honors Christ.

It is wise that you see the tension clearly. You want to show love through care, but staying overnight without a chaperone would compromise the commitment to purity that God calls all believers to. That boundary is not unloving, it is loving in the truest way. There are other ways to help that keep that boundary intact, such as visiting during the day, coordinating with his family, friends, or church community to cover nighttime care, or asking medical staff about home health options for the first few days. Praying for God to provide for his needs through those appropriate means is better than asking Him to bless a compromise.

You also mentioned sexual sin and that you feel it was your fault it started. God calls both people to chastity, and when sin happens both need to take responsibility before Him. Do not carry a false burden alone, and do not minimize what happened either. Scripture shows that God is longsuffering and patient, not overlooking sin but giving space for real repentance. True repentance is more than tears or regret, it is a turning away from sin and turning toward Christ, like Peter who wept bitterly and returned to the Lord. That kind of repentance is always met with forgiveness because of Jesus Christ alone, who bore our sin and is the only way of salvation. What destroys us is not sin itself so much as despair that keeps us from repenting. Do not let shame keep you from coming to God. Bring this sin into the light with Him, confess it fully, and also bring it to a trusted pastor or mature believing woman for accountability and counsel so you can walk in purity going forward. Pride often is the root that makes us think we can handle temptation on our own, but humility and clear boundaries are needed.

Your concern about your boyfriend is also important to bring before the Lord. You describe him as a professing Christian who lives in a more worldly way and is involved in false teaching. That is a serious matter for your future. A relationship that is not centered on the true gospel and on obeying Christ will face deep conflict, especially around purity and truth. Pray not simply that he will understand your boundary, but that God will open his eyes to the truth of salvation through Jesus Christ alone and draw him to follow Him wholeheartedly, leaving behind false teaching and worldly patterns. This is also a time to seek wise counsel about whether this relationship is leading you both toward holiness and toward marriage as God defines it, or pulling you away from it.

We will pray for you and for him.

Father, we thank You for Your mercy and patience toward sinners. We ask for Your healing hand upon this young man as he faces a biopsy, and for wisdom for his doctors. Please provide for his care in a way that honors You, through family, friends, Your church, or medical help, so that nighttime needs are met without requiring what is not right before You. We pray for true repentance for both of them where there has been sexual sin, and for Your forgiveness and cleansing through Jesus Christ. Give our sister strength to stand firm in purity, humility to set clear boundaries, and support from godly counsel. We pray for this young man, that You would lead him out of worldly living and false teaching into the truth of Your Word and into genuine faith and obedience to Jesus. Lead both of them according to Your will, toward holiness, wisdom, and whatever future You have for them. In Jesus name we pray, amen.

Continue to walk in the light, stay in fellowship with believers who will encourage you in chastity and truth, and keep seeking the Lord daily in His Word. If you have not already, please talk with a pastor you trust about both the practical care plans and the spiritual questions in this relationship so you are not carrying this alone.
