Big exam
We hear your heart, dear brother or sister, and we stand with you in this moment of testing. It is clear that God has been faithful to guide you this far, opening doors to a top school, sustaining you through undergraduate and graduate studies, and preparing you for this certification. The Lord does not bring us to the edge of promise only to abandon us there. "Being confident of this very thing, that he who began a good work in you will complete it until the day of Jesus Christ." (Philippians 1:6 WEB)
We recognize the weight of repeated failure, and how it can whisper lies that God is distant or displeased. But Scripture tells us, "For a righteous man falls seven times, and rises up again; but the wicked are overthrown by calamity." (Proverbs 24:16 WEB) Each time you’ve risen to try again, you’ve demonstrated faith, not in your own strength, but in God’s sustaining grace. The Lord is near to the brokenhearted and saves those who have a contrite spirit (Psalm 34:18). You are not alone in this struggle.
We also want to gently remind you that true access to God’s presence and power comes only through the name of Jesus Christ. There is no other name under heaven by which we must be saved (Acts 4:12). If you have not placed your trust in Him as Lord and Savior, we urge you to do so now. Confess your sins, believe in His death and resurrection, and receive the gift of eternal life. Only then can you approach the Father with full confidence, knowing you are His child.
Now, let us pray together in Jesus’ name:

We declare that this exam is not a measure of their worth or Your love for them. Whether they pass or must try again, You are working all things together for their good (Romans 8:28). But in this moment, we boldly ask for success, not for their glory, but for Yours. Let this achievement be a testimony to Your faithfulness and a platform for Your purposes in their life.

A cry for God's nearness in the hour of trial, this He will surely answer, for He is not far from any one of us. The examination table may seem a lonely place, but in Him you live and move and have your being. He who has led you thus far, opening doors to a top school and carrying you through your degrees, stands closer than the very air you breathe. Do not measure His nearness by your feeling of it; the sun is no less present when clouds obscure its beams. Some of us observe His providences in daily life, and we are never without a providence to observe.
Yet you speak of having failed many times already. Be not cast down by this. Some kinds of weakness are of God's appointment and necessarily incident to our humanity. They are not sinful, and therefore we may continue to be subject to them without regret. These repeated falls have been your tutors in the school of Christ, teaching you that your strength lies not in your own intellect or preparation, but in His truthfulness. It is David's business to believe that come what may, God's purpose must stand, and God will do all His pleasure. So it is with you. God has sworn by His own name, and is man's free will to be omnipotent, and God's purpose to fail, because men will not let God succeed? The very anxiety that arises through your being in this difficulty unfits you to meet it. Cease from the feverish churning of your spirit.
You have nothing to do with the result, dear friend, that is His business. You go and do the right thing, sit the exam with diligence, and then be no longer anxious about it, but leave the result with God. The power of a feeble prayer, when it is the heart's genuine cry for His presence, wins a speedy answer. It is not the eloquence of your petition but the nearness of your God that secures the blessing. A child in the dark does not need to understand fire; he only needs to hold his Father's hand. The blood of Jesus Christ has brought you into this nearness, in your conversion, in your baptism, in your daily walk, you are a brand plucked from the burning, and the angel of the Lord stands to rebuke the accuser who would use your past failures to mock your hope.
Go then to this test, not looking at your own ability, but conscious that you have a mission from Heaven. God's decree appoints you to accomplish this end, and His promise declares that you shall succeed in whatever form His wisdom deems best. If He has taught you to trust in His name, will He now put you to shame? That can never be. The whole end to which we drive is this, that your salvation, and every lesser deliverance, is in Him.

God is not a distant overseer, waiting indifferently for us to succeed or fail. He is the One who declared, "I am a God nigh at hand, and not a God afar off." When you call upon Him in earnest, He does not delay. Even before you finish speaking, He is ready to answer. What father or mother rushes so swiftly to their child's cry? Yet God stands continually, listening for the voice of His servants. If He has led you to this moment, do not doubt His presence now. The very longing for His nearness is proof that He has not withdrawn. It is our sins that separate, but the soul that reaches for Him in humility draws Him close.
But you must consider why you have failed many times already. Do not imagine that passing this exam rests solely on your own strength. God is faithful, and He will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you can bear. With the trial, He always provides a way of escape, that you might endure. Yet endurance is not merely pushing through with clenched fists. The Apostle urges, "Work out your own salvation with fear and trembling" -- not with anxious despair, but with the reverent awe of one who knows that "it is God who works in you both to will and to work." Your preparation, your study, your every effort is a working out of His inner working. When you sit for that exam, you do not sit alone. He who perceives the very thoughts and intents of the heart is present. Live with that holy fear: not a dread that crushes, but a mindfulness that steadies the soul. The architect standing on a high building fears lest he fall, but that fear keeps him safe. So too, as you have risen to this point through His grace, do not laugh carelessly or throw yourself back in presumption. Serve the Lord with fear, and in that trembling you will find true joy.
Have you considered why this certification matters? We chase so many worldly gains with anxiety that scourges the soul. The Egyptians labored under the lash, and we toil under the tyranny of worry, far more grievous. If passing this test is God's will, He will bring it to pass as you do your part with diligence. But if the repeated failures are a call to examine your heart, do not shrug it off. Pray, but also be at peace. God is not pleased by frantic striving; He delights in a spirit that remembers no evil, trusts His goodness, and seeks His glory above all. Whether you eat or drink or take an exam, do all to the glory of God. That is the one all-encompassing aim.

If you desire God near, draw near to Him with a broken and humble heart. He does not despise such a one.
