Bad decisions

Dhitlor

Good and Faithful Servant
Please pray for me. I'm always messing up and making bad decisions and failing as a Christian. I don't know if it's a matter of mental health struggles (I am willing to look into getting medicated if necessary) but I just can't do right even when I lean on Christ for help. I've hurt so many people and caused so much trouble because of this. Please pray. Thank you.

We hear the deep sorrow and frustration in your words, and we want you to know that we are standing with you before the throne of grace. The struggle you describe is real, and it’s important to acknowledge the weight of it, not to dwell in shame, but to bring it fully before the Lord, who already knows your heart and loves you unconditionally. The apostle Paul himself wrestled with this very tension in Romans 7:15-19 (WEB), where he writes, "For I don’t know what I am doing. For I don’t practice what I desire to do; but what I hate, that I do. But if what I don’t desire, that I do, I consent to the law that it is good. So now it is no more I that do it, but sin which dwells in me. For I know that in me, that is, in my flesh, dwells no good thing. For desire is present with me, but I don’t find it doing that which is good. For the good which I desire, I don’t do; but the evil which I don’t desire, that I practice."

This passage doesn’t excuse sin, but it does remind us that the battle between the flesh and the Spirit is one every believer faces. The fact that you desire to do right and lean on Christ for help is evidence of the Holy Spirit’s work in you, even when the outcome doesn’t reflect it. That desire itself is a gift from God, and it’s a sign that He is not finished with you.

It’s also wise and humble of you to consider whether mental health struggles may be contributing to this cycle. The Bible doesn’t shy away from acknowledging the brokenness of our minds and bodies. In 3 John 1:2 (WEB), we’re reminded, "Beloved, I pray that you may prosper in all things and be healthy, even as your soul prospers." Seeking help, whether through counseling, medical care, or godly accountability, is not a sign of weak faith; it’s an act of stewardship over the life God has given you. If medication or professional support could help clear the fog so you can walk more steadily in obedience, then it’s worth pursuing. We encourage you to seek out a trusted Christian counselor or doctor who can help you discern what steps to take.

But let’s also address the root of the issue: sin. The bad decisions you’ve made, the people you’ve hurt, these are not just symptoms of a mental struggle; they are choices that have consequences. The enemy would love for you to believe that you’re beyond redemption, that your failures define you, or that God is tired of your stumbling. But Scripture declares the opposite. In 1 John 1:9 (WEB), we read, "If we confess our sins, he is faithful and righteous to forgive us the sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness." And in Lamentations 3:22-23 (WEB), we’re reminded, "It is because of Yahweh’s loving kindnesses that we are not consumed, because his compassion doesn’t fail. They are new every morning; great is your faithfulness."

Your identity is not in your failures but in Christ’s finished work on the cross. When you repent, He does not hold your sins against you. However, repentance also means turning away from those patterns and seeking to walk in a new way. This is where the body of Christ comes in. You cannot fight this battle alone. James 5:16 (WEB) tells us, "Confess your offenses to one another, and pray for one another, that you may be healed. The insistent prayer of a righteous person is powerfully effective." We encourage you to find a mature believer, a pastor, mentor, or small group, who can walk alongside you, pray with you, and hold you accountable. Isolation is the enemy’s playground; community is where healing begins.

Now, let’s pray together:

Heavenly Father, we come before You with heavy hearts, lifting up our brother/sister who is struggling under the weight of their failures and the consequences of their choices. Lord, we know that You are near to the brokenhearted and save those who are crushed in spirit (Psalm 34:18). We ask that You would meet them in this place of sorrow and remind them of Your unfailing love. Father, we confess that we all fall short, but Your grace is sufficient, and Your power is made perfect in weakness (2 Corinthians 12:9). We pray that You would break the cycle of sin in their life and replace it with a hunger for righteousness.

Lord, if there are mental health struggles contributing to this battle, we ask that You would guide them to the right help, whether that’s medical care, counseling, or godly support. Give them wisdom to discern what steps to take and the courage to take them. We also ask that You would bring healing to the relationships that have been damaged by their choices. Soften hearts, grant repentance where it’s needed, and restore what has been broken, if it is Your will.

Father, we rebuke the lies of the enemy that tell them they are beyond redemption or that their failures define them. We declare over them that they are a new creation in Christ (2 Corinthians 5:17), forgiven, loved, and called according to Your purpose. Strengthen their faith, Lord, and help them to see themselves as You see them. Surround them with believers who will encourage, challenge, and pray for them. Teach them to rely not on their own strength but on the power of Your Holy Spirit.

We thank You, Lord, that You are a God who redeems. You take what is broken and make it beautiful. We trust that You are working in this situation, even now, and we ask that You would give them hope for the future. May they experience the joy of Your salvation and the peace that comes from walking in obedience to You. In Jesus’ mighty name we pray, Amen.

In the days ahead, remember that progress is not about perfection but about persistence. Every time you choose to turn to Christ instead of your old patterns, you are growing. Every time you repent and seek restoration, you are reflecting His heart. You are not defined by your worst moments but by the One who died to redeem them. Keep pressing into Him, and don’t give up. The same God who began a good work in you will complete it (Philippians 1:6).

May God in Jesus' name answer your prayer request according to God's perfect love, wisdom, will, timing, grace, and mercy. God is so in love with you. Be Encouraged!
