Anxiety

We hear your heart in this question and we have brought it before the Lord together with you in Jesus name.

We want to gently clarify that God does not author anxiety and depression as a way to punish you or to manipulate your attention. Scripture tells us For God didn't give us a spirit of fear, but of power, love, and self-control 2 Timothy 1:7 and Peace I leave with you. My peace I give to you; not as the world gives, give I to you. Don't let your heart be troubled, neither let it be fearful John 14:27. Anxiety and depression are part of living in a fallen and broken world, they can come from many sources including our own thoughts, spiritual oppression, physical burdens, and the trials of life, but they are not the character or the gift of God.

At the same time, God in His love and sovereignty can and does use even our pain to draw us closer to Him, to refine us, and to get our attention when we have drifted or when we need His comfort. He does not need to send darkness to be heard, He speaks through His Word, through the conviction of the Holy Spirit, and through His loving discipline, for whom the Lord loves, he chastens, and scourges every son whom he receives Hebrews 12:6. What feels like anxiety or deep heaviness can become a moment where we realize our need for Him, not because He caused the affliction to hurt us, but because He redeems it for good. We know that all things work together for good for those who love God, to those who are called according to his purpose Romans 8:28.

The Lord's desire for you is not that you remain in fear or despair, but that you cast your cares on Him. We are told In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus Philippians 4:6-7 and casting all your worries on him, because he cares for you 1 Peter 5:7. He is not distant in your struggle, Yahweh is near to those who have a broken heart, and saves those who have a crushed spirit Psalm 34:18.

We encourage you to continue to bring every anxious thought to Jesus honestly in prayer, to stay rooted in His Word daily, to seek fellowship with mature believers who can counsel and pray with you, and if the burden remains heavy to seek wise and godly help so you are not carrying it alone. God wants your attention because He loves you and wants relationship with you, not because He wants you to suffer.

We pray together for you now. Father, we lift up this dear one to You in the name of Jesus Christ. We thank You that You are near to the brokenhearted and that You care deeply for every worry and sorrow. We ask that You would reveal Your perfect love which casts out fear, that You would guard this heart and mind with Your peace that surpasses all understanding. Help us to hear Your gentle voice through Your Word and to know that You are not the author of fear but the giver of power, love and a sound mind. Work all things in this life for good and draw us ever closer to You. Comfort where there is depression, calm where there is anxiety, and lead into the full hope we have in Jesus. We ask this in Jesus name, amen.

Thank you for asking this so honestly. It makes sense to wonder if God is sending the anxiety and low feelings to get your attention, especially when you are trying to seek Him and want answers.

We do not see God as someone who sends anxiety or depression to punish or pressure us. He is a loving Father who wants relationship with you, and He draws near with compassion when you feel overwhelmed, not with fear. At the same time He is able to meet you right in the middle of those hard feelings and gently shape your heart as you seek Him. The anxiety itself is not a sign He is angry or that you have failed.

We understand anxiety as part of being human in a fallen world. It involves both mind and body responding to stress, worry and strain, and it can be intensified by exhaustion, ongoing stress, health factors and difficult life experiences. That is why it helps to care for both your spiritual and practical needs.

If these feelings are frequent, make sleep or daily life hard, or feel heavy for weeks at a time, we encourage you to reach out to a trusted pastor and also to a medical professional or counselor alongside prayer, so you are not carrying this alone.

Father, we bring our friend to You in Jesus name. You see the anxiety and the questions and the desire to hear from You. Give peace, wisdom and steady support around them, and help them know Your nearness and care each day. Amen.

Your question comes from a burdened heart, and it is right that you bring it to the Lord, for He hears those who cry unto Him. Do you not believe that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to His purpose? And do you not believe that He sits a Sovereign on His Throne and rules all things well? You say that you do, and this truth must be your anchor when anxiety and depression toss you to and fro.

The Scripture teaches that in all the acts of God in Providence, He has a fixed and a settled purpose. He is in one mind, His purpose is unchanged, and what His soul desireth, that He doeth. Yet we must not think of our Heavenly Father as one who delights to afflict His children for the mere sake of getting their attention, as a man might vex another. He is not the God of cruelty, but the God of love and mercy. Still does He spare the guilty and in His long suffering He gives them further opportunities for repentance, and He overrules even our sorrows for our good.

Anxiety and depression belong to this fallen world, to our frail frame, to temptation which is to some the constant misery day and night, and to that chill of the soul when we cry, My soul thirsts for God, for the living God, and our tears have been our meat day and night. There are seasons when we feel an eclipse of the great Sun whose Presence makes our day. The Lord permits these dark seasons, and in His wisdom He uses them to draw us from living at a distance from Him. Worldly men think very little of God and have no communion with Him, but the true believer recognizes God everywhere and learns to have communion with Him wherever he goes. So affliction becomes a voice that says, Come nearer.

Consider your Savior. He was not made perfect in character by His suffering, for He always was perfect, perfect God and perfect man, but He was made officially perfect as the Captain of our salvation through His sufferings. His was an unparalleled suffering, the whole of His Nature running out into that act of obedience called suffering, even to that cry, My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me. Why did He suffer thus? That He might bring us to God, that He might obtain that tender temper through suffering, by being Himself tempted, to cheer those that are afflicted. He knows in the very center of your pain, grief, misery and your depression, and there is a place of perfect repose when you have once yielded yourself fully up to God. He is able to succour them that are tempted, for He Himself has suffered being tempted.

Therefore, what shall you do with your anxiety? You go and do the right thing and then be no longer anxious about it, but leave the result with God. Cry unto God most high, unto God that performs all things for you. Pray as David prayed, Be merciful unto me, O God, be merciful unto me, for my soul trusts in You, yes, in the shadow of Your wings will I make my refuge. Declare your ways unto God, as the Psalmist did, I have declared my ways and You heard me, teach me Your statutes. And believe this, that God shall send forth His mercy and His truth, and He will sooner send help from Heaven for His people than that they should be left without succour.

If your anxiety has driven you to feel your need of Christ, bless God for that need, but do not rest in the anxiety itself. Rest in Him who suffered for sin, the just for the unjust. If Christ really did suffer for sinners, then God is just in not punishing sinners who trust Him, for the justice of God is satisfied and there is a sure basis for a sinner to rest upon. Come then to Him by faith alone, for salvation is through Jesus Christ alone, and He will give you not only pardon but peace.

Cast your burden upon the Lord, and He shall sustain you. He sits upon the Throne in Zion, working His way and having His will, and Infinite sovereignty bestows Grace as a pure river of water of life proceeding out of the Throne of God and of the Lamb. Let that river flow into your troubled heart through prayer, through the Word, through trusting obedience, and you shall find that even this present heaviness is made to work for your good and for His glory.

May God in Jesus' name answer your prayer request according to God's perfect love, wisdom, will, timing, grace, and mercy. God is so in love with you. Be Encouraged!

Heal Me Lord Jesus Spirit, Soul, And Body

Your question is an important and honest one, and God hears you as you bring it to Him in Jesus name.

God does not send anxiety and depression as a cruel way to get your attention. The Scripture shows us that God is the God of mercies, the all pitying and merciful God who listens to prayer and desires to dwell with us and give us peace. Anxiety and heaviness of heart are part of living in a fallen and broken world, not a sign that God has turned against you.

At the same time, God in His love can use even seasons of suffering and anxiety to draw us closer to Himself. He does not abandon us in those seasons. Jesus Himself was made lower for a time and submitted to sufferings, even the suffering of death, and was then crowned with glory and honor. Because He Himself has suffered being tempted and tried, He knows what tribulation and temptation feel like, not only as God but as man, and He is able to help and comfort those who are tempted and anxious.

How we experience affliction depends greatly on the disposition of our own hearts. The same suffering that crushes one person can refine another, not because the suffering itself is good, but because God can use it when we turn to Him with patience and trust. Like Job, who suffered greatly yet endured thankfully, we are called to grow in strength of soul and long suffering, which is more powerful than any outward protection. Love and patience in the soul do not let every thorn spring up, and they keep us steady when unexpected troubles fall.

So instead of seeing anxiety as a punishment sent by God, see it as a place where God invites you to come to Him for mercy and help. Prayer greatly contributes to our deliverance, and God has promised that when the mind turns to Him and puts aside sin, He will dwell there. Cast your cares upon Him, for He cares for you.

We pray for you now that the Lord Jesus Christ, who alone is our salvation and our hope, would lift this burden from you, fill your heart with His peace that passes all understanding, and teach you to rest in His long suffering love. May He give you wisdom, surround you with faithful people who can walk with you, and help you to seek both spiritual counsel and practical help if the anxiety remains heavy. Continue to bring every worry to Him in prayer, trusting that the One who suffered for you is near to comfort you. Amen.

Your honest question about anxiety and depression is one many people carry quietly, and it matters that you asked it.

God does not deal with you cruelly or send pain just to get your attention as if He were toying with you. The Bible shows us that God is the infinite, eternal Creator who made you for a purpose, and that purpose is to know Him and to have a real, loving relationship with Him. He made you with a mind and a will of your own, not as a robot, because He desires fellowship that comes from the heart. When sin entered the world, that image was broken. What was once light became darkness, and we now live in a fallen world where anxiety, depression, fear and suffering are real. They are part of the brokenness we all experience, and the enemy will often use those very hard seasons to whisper a lie that if God truly loved you, He would not allow you to hurt.

Yet Scripture also teaches that God is faithful and loving even when He allows hard things, and He can use what He allows for a good purpose in your life. You can suffer according to the will of God, and through that suffering He can develop a depth of character that cannot be formed any other way. For those who love God and are called according to His purpose, He promises that all things work together for good. That does not mean everything that happens is good, but that He is at work in everything to bring good, often by drawing you to cling to Him more closely and to trust Him when you do not understand.

One of His great purposes in trials is to conform you more into the image of Jesus Christ, to smooth the rough edges as you learn to rely on Him. There is a deep thirst in every person for God Himself, and often it is in seasons of anxiety or emptiness that you become most aware of that thirst. God does not want a mere legal relationship where you try to keep rules to earn His favor. Through Jesus Christ He has made peace possible, because we were once at war with Him going our own way. Now, through faith in Jesus alone, you can be brought into a new relationship as a child of God, and those who are led by the Spirit of God are shown to be His children.

That is why knowing God through His Word is so important. It is there He reveals who He is and what His will is. And the purpose of prayer is not to bend God to our will, but to bring our hearts into alignment with His will, to seek to know it and follow it. When you do not understand His purposes, you can fall back on what you do know, that He loves you, that He knows what you are going through, that He is good, and that He is working His eternal purpose in you.

If you are experiencing ongoing anxiety or depression, bring it honestly to Jesus in prayer, open the Bible to hear His voice, and walk with others who can support you and pray with you, including trusted pastoral counsel and, when needed, wise help for your health. Ask Him not only to take the burden away, but to show you His will, to lead you by His Spirit, and to form Christ more fully in you through this season. He wants you to know Him, to be led by Him, and to find that even in this difficulty you can cling to Him and discover He is faithful.
