If he is a believer, we pray that he would grow in discipline, not just in sleep and diet, but in his walk with the Lord. If he is not yet saved, we pray that he would come to know Christ and find true rest in Him, for Jesus says, "Come to me, all you who labor and are heavily burdened, and I will give you rest" (Matthew 11:28).
Father, we ask that You would grant this young man wisdom in caring for his body, but more importantly, that he would seek You with all his heart. May he find his strength and purpose in You alone. How earnest a thing it is to pray for the salvation of a soul! I rejoice that you have lifted this girl before the throne of grace, and those around her. Yet pause, I beseech you, and see that you do not neglect your own salvation while looking abroad. “Work out your own salvation with fear and trembling.” It is a dreadful thing to stand pleading for another while your own heart remains a stranger to the peace of God. The way of salvation is plain: “Look unto me, and be ye saved, all the ends of the earth.” Faith in Christ Jesus, a simple trusting in him, is the one door. He only is our rock and our salvation; it is not by works, nor by prayers for others, but by casting yourself wholly upon him. Let me ask you, dear soul, have you so looked? For if you have not, all your intercession is but the smoke of a fire that has never been kindled at the altar of his cross.
You ask for a man to know to drink much coffee and to get much sleep, but I must point you to a better rest. “He giveth his beloved sleep”, the sleep of contentment, the sleep of security in Christ. But the mere slumber of the body, secured by earthly draughts, is a poor counterfeit. The world is full of those who sleep as the sluggard, while the sparks of eternal ruin fly into their faces, and they feel it not. O pray rather that this man may awake to righteousness, and so find that sweet sleep which comes from a conscience sprinkled with the blood of Jesus. True refreshment is not in the coffee cup, but in him who said, “Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.” Seek first the kingdom of God for your own soul, and for those you commend to him, and all needful things shall be added. May the eternal Spirit compel you to say, “I will rejoice in thy salvation,” and then you shall know that sleep which is the gift of his beloved.

You ask for the salvation of a girl and those about her, and this is a good request, for the death of Jesus is the salvation of the world. Yet do not suppose that merely hearing or making such a petition is sufficient for salvation. The care of this world and the deceitfulness of riches choke the word; they include gluttony, vain imagination about the body, and every vice.
For see: you also pray that a man know to drink much coffee and take abundant sleep. What is this? Are not these the very cares that make the seed unfruitful? Why seek such bodily ease when the acceptable time is now, the day of salvation? The Apostle says, “Whether we be afflicted, it is for your comfort and salvation,” and again, “Let us labor to enter into that rest, lest any man fall after the same example of unbelief.” It is not by coffee or long slumber that one flees the wrath to come, but by repentance and continence, by putting on the helmet of salvation, that is, faith, which guards the mind and quenches the darts of the evil one.
Exhort that girl and all in her life to this labor: to harden not their hearts, to turn from the shadow of bodily rites to the substance of Christ. For the hope of salvation rests not in our forefathers or in bodily refreshment, but in our own patient enduring of suffering with Him. If they are partakers of Christ’s sufferings, they shall also be partakers of the comfort that works salvation. Therefore fix your mind yonder, and pray not for a full cup and a soft bed, but that they may lay hold of eternal life.

What a beautiful thing it is when the Spirit stirs a heart to pray for the salvation of others. That is pure intercession, reaching beyond your own world to bring someone else before the throne of grace. When you pray for a girl and for the people in her life to know God’s saving mercy, you are stepping into the very work that Jesus Himself does, for He ever lives to make intercession. That kind of prayer is never limited by distance or circumstance. Just as a believer confined in a prison cell can, through prayer, minister across provinces and seas, so your whispered request can touch lives you may never see this side of eternity. Salvation belongs to the Lord, and He is able to save to the uttermost. Take confidence in that.
Your concern for the man in your life, that he would take care of his body with rest and whatever keeps him alert, is also something you can bring honestly to God. But remember that prayer is not first about getting our wishes granted. Its deepest purpose is to get God’s will accomplished. So lift that request up, but hold it with an open hand. The heart of the matter is not really coffee or a certain number of hours of sleep, but his well-being and the strength he needs to walk through his days. Ask God to give him wisdom about his own body, to grant him true refreshment, and to be his strong habitation when he is weary. Let that prayer end with praise, trusting that the Father knows what we need before we even ask.
