The cry for time is a dangerous prayer when the soul is yet outside the Ark of Christ. To request two years for oneself, to prove one's own strength, is to ask for a lengthened chain in the prison-house of sin. The sinner imagines he can cleanse his own way, but every day spent in self-reliance is a day heaping up further debt against the day of reckoning. Consider the man sick of the palsy, lying helpless before the Lord. Did he beg for a season to first stretch his limbs by his own power? No, he was brought in his utter paralysis, and the first word Christ spoke was not "rise," but "thy sins be forgiven thee." The healing of the soul must precede the healing of the life. Before the man could take up his bed and walk, the eternal weight of his guilt had to be lifted.
The text rings out with a divine certainty: "I, even I, am he that blotteth out thy transgressions for mine own sake." It is a deed of mercy that astonishes even the Lord to speak of it, as if He were amazed at His own grace, "I, even I." There is no hesitation here, no postponement, no requirement that the prodigal first make himself worthy in a far country. The forgiveness is surprising in its immediacy and completeness. It is an absolute cancellation of the whole debt, not a portion to be paid by your two years of striving and the remainder covered by grace. The law of the Jubilee did not allow the debtor to say, "Let me work another season to contribute something to the release." No, the creditor was to grant an outright remission. So it is with God; His promise is for oblivion of all your indebtedness through faith in Christ.
But mark where this forgiveness is to be found. The text declares, "There is forgiveness with thee." The Hebrew holds no verb for time, it is not merely there was, or there will be; it stands as an eternal present. Forgiveness is with God, in His very nature, flowing from the wounds of Jesus who died, "the Just for the unjust, that he might bring us to God." To look elsewhere is vanity. To cry to any other name is to knock at an empty door while the King’s palace stands wide open. The offense mounted up to heaven, and from that very heaven the pardon descends. There is no need to wander in the pathways of Ophel or seek a mediator among the idols; the living God, against whom you have sinned, is the very One who bestows the remission.
This forgiveness is not a cold, formal acquittal. It is the warm, hearty embrace of a Father who runs to meet His returning child. Christ absolves with all His heart; He does not play fast and loose with men. The gifts and calling of God are without repentance. The devil would gladly grant you those two years, for in them you would either sink deeper into the mire or be lulled into a fatal sleep. The midnight hour is striking; do not say, "When I get home I will ask." The only moment of which you can be certain is this one, while the Spirit whispers, "There is forgiveness." There is forgiveness for great sin, for the chief of sinners, and it is measured by the greatness of the sacrifice made for it. Let the whisper drive away despair, but let it also slay your self-trust. Come now, with nothing to pay, and you shall find that where the forgiveness enters, there enters also a new heart that fears the Lord and turns from the sin it once loved.

You speak of having been bad and ask for two years to prove yourself on your own, but you invoke a false god alongside the true. Do you not know that the remission of sins is found in the blood of Jesus Christ alone, and that there is no other name under heaven by which we must be saved? The grace of God does not wait upon our timeline; the baptism of repentance proclaimed by John was itself a preparation, pointing to the Lamb of God who takes away sin. To delay is to risk your soul, as the ground that drinks in rain yet bears thorns is near to cursing and its end is to be burned.
You wish to prove something to yourself, but the Apostle commands, let a man prove himself, not to boast in his own strength, but to examine his heart and flee to the mercy of Christ. He who trusts in his own arm will perish, but he who humbles himself and beats his breast, saying, “God be merciful to me a sinner,” will go home justified. Cast away this idolatrous prayer and the pride of self-reliance. You cannot ask the God of the Bible to help you succeed in a venture that dishonors Him by calling on another name. That is not how grace works. It is like asking a pure spring to produce salt water.

You must leave it there.

The answer is the blood of a sacrifice you did not offer. Just as the high priest had to enter with blood for himself before he could intercede for the people, so we cannot enter God’s presence based on our own reform efforts. Jesus Christ was offered once to bear the sins of many. He is the only hope for a person in a hopeless state. When blind Bartimaeus heard Jesus was passing by, he knew it was his only chance. Your friends might not see the real mess you know you are in, but you see it. And the Son of God is passing by in the gospel.
It is appointed unto man once to die, and after this the judgment. You will not stand before God and give a defense based on a two-year self-improvement project. You will answer as to whether you surrendered your life or continued to be governed by self. So let this despair do its holy work. Let it deflate your pride and self-confidence. Do not let it drive you to a false hope. Let it drive you to the cross, where you can finally stop trying to be your own savior. Cry out for deliverance not from your circumstances, but from your self-governed nature.
