We come before the Lord with heavy hearts, lifting up this situation to Him in prayer. Divorce is a painful and difficult process, and we know that God’s heart grieves over the brokenness of marriage. Scripture tells us in Malachi 2:16, "For I hate divorce," says the Lord, the God of Israel, "and him who covers his garment with violence!" says the Lord of Armies. "Therefore take heed to your spirit, that you don’t deal treacherously." Yet we also know that God is full of mercy and grace, and He desires healing, restoration, and wisdom for His children, even in the midst of such trials.
First, we must address the reality of divorce with honesty and biblical truth. The Lord designed marriage to be a lifelong covenant between one man and one woman, a reflection of Christ’s love for His church (Ephesians 5:22-33). Divorce was never part of God’s original plan, and while He permits it in cases of unrepentant adultery or abandonment (Matthew 19:8-9), it is always a result of sin and brokenness in the world. If this second divorce is proceeding, we must ask the Lord to search our hearts and reveal any areas where we have contributed to the breakdown of the marriage. Have we sought reconciliation with humility and forgiveness, or have we allowed bitterness, pride, or selfishness to take root? The Word tells us in James 4:1-2, "Where do wars and fightings among you come from? Don’t they come from your pleasures that war in your members? You lust, and don’t have. You kill, covet, and can’t obtain. You fight and make war. You don’t have, because you don’t ask."
We rebuke the spirit of division and strife that seeks to destroy this marriage and any future hope of reconciliation. We declare that God is a God of peace, and we pray that His peace would guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus (Philippians 4:7). If there is still a possibility for restoration, we ask the Lord to soften hearts, bring repentance, and lead both of you to seek His will above your own desires. If reconciliation is not possible, we pray that this mediation would be guided by wisdom, fairness, and a spirit of cooperation, rather than contention or revenge. Proverbs 15:1 reminds us, "A gentle answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger."
We also lift up the trial scheduled for next week, should mediation not succeed. We ask the Lord to go before you and grant you favor with the judge and all those involved in the proceedings. May His justice prevail, and may the outcome be one that honors Him and protects the well-being of any children or vulnerable parties involved. We pray that you would be filled with the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding (Philippians 4:7), and that you would trust in His sovereignty, even when the path ahead is uncertain.
If you have not already done so, we strongly encourage you to seek godly counsel from a pastor or Christian counselor who can walk with you through this difficult season. The body of Christ is called to bear one another’s burdens (Galatians 6:2), and you do not have to walk this path alone. Surround yourselves with believers who will pray for you, speak truth into your lives, and encourage you to seek the Lord above all else.
We must also address the spiritual reality of this situation. Divorce often leaves deep wounds, not only emotionally and physically, but spiritually as well. We pray that you would draw near to the Lord in this time, seeking His face and His healing touch. Psalm 34:18 assures us, "The Lord is near to those who have a broken heart, and saves those who have a crushed spirit." Do not allow shame, guilt, or condemnation to keep you from running to Jesus. He is the only one who can bind up your wounds and restore your soul (Psalm 23:3). If you have not already done so, we urge you to confess any sin in your life, whether it be bitterness, unforgiveness, pride, or unfaithfulness, and receive the forgiveness and cleansing that only Christ can offer (1 John 1:9).
We also pray for protection over your hearts and minds during this time. The enemy would love nothing more than to use this situation to sow seeds of anger, resentment, or despair. We rebuke the lies of the enemy that tell you this pain will never end, that you are unlovable, or that God has abandoned you. The truth is that God is close to the brokenhearted (Psalm 34:18), and He has a future and a hope for you (Jeremiah 29:11). We declare that no weapon formed against you will prosper (Isaiah 54:17), and we stand in agreement with you for God’s protection and provision in every area of your life.
For those who may be struggling with the aftermath of a previous divorce, we want to remind you that God’s grace is sufficient for you. While divorce is not part of His perfect plan, He is a God who redeems and restores. He can use even the most broken situations for His glory and your good (Romans 8:28). If you have repented of any sin related to the divorce, receive His forgiveness and walk in the freedom that Christ died to give you. Do not let the past define you or keep you from the future God has for you.
We must also address the importance of seeking the Lord’s will for any future relationships. If you are considering remarriage, we urge you to seek God’s guidance and wait on His timing. Scripture warns us in 1 Corinthians 7:10-11 that those who divorce should remain unmarried or be reconciled to their spouse. While remarriage is not forbidden in all cases, it should only be pursued with great caution, prayer, and counsel. We pray that you would not rush into another relationship out of loneliness or fear, but that you would seek the Lord’s will above all else. If He does lead you into another marriage, may it be one that honors Him and reflects His love and faithfulness.
Let us now come before the Lord in prayer:
Heavenly Father, we come before You with heavy hearts, lifting up this situation to You. Lord, we know that divorce is not Your perfect will, and we grieve over the brokenness of marriage in this world. Yet we also know that You are a God of mercy, grace, and redemption. We ask that You would go before those involved in this mediation and trial, granting them wisdom, peace, and favor. Soften hearts, Lord, and bring healing where there has been hurt. If there is still a possibility for reconciliation, we pray that You would work a miracle in this marriage. If not, we ask that You would guide the proceedings with fairness and justice, protecting the well-being of all involved.
Father, we rebuke the spirit of division and strife that seeks to destroy this family. We declare that You are a God of peace, and we ask that Your peace would guard their hearts and minds in Christ Jesus. We pray for protection over their emotions, their thoughts, and their spirits. Shield them from the lies of the enemy and fill them with Your truth. Lord, we ask that You would draw them closer to You in this time. May they seek Your face and find comfort in Your presence. Heal their wounds, bind up their broken hearts, and restore their souls.
We pray for any children involved in this situation. Lord, we ask that You would be their comfort and their strength. Protect their hearts from bitterness and confusion. Surround them with godly influences and give them the wisdom to navigate this difficult season. We pray that they would come to know You as their Heavenly Father, who will never leave them nor forsake them.
Father, we also pray for any future relationships. If it is Your will for them to remarry, we ask that You would lead them to godly spouses who will honor You and love them as Christ loves the church. Give them patience and discernment as they seek Your will. Lord, we know that You have a plan and a purpose for their lives, even in the midst of this pain. We ask that You would use this situation for Your glory and their good. May they emerge from this trial stronger in their faith, more dependent on You, and filled with hope for the future.
We thank You, Lord, that You are a God who hears our prayers and answers them according to Your will. We trust in Your sovereignty and Your love for us. May Your name be glorified in all things, and may Your will be done in this situation. In the mighty name of Jesus, we pray. Amen.
