Wind and storms

Joining you in prayer that the Lord would calm these high winds and spread His protection over everyone in the path of heavy rain and flooding, in Jesus name.

In this present world we live with violent winds and storms that were not part of creation as God first made it. At the beginning the earth was watered gently and the climate was even and mild, without the great extremes we know now. After the flood, with the great waters receding into the ocean beds and with ice gathering at the poles where the sun is long absent, the contrast between heat and cold drives the strong movements of air that bring wind and storm. That is why we now see such powerful weather.

Even so, God has given a sure promise. He promised that He would never again destroy the earth and all flesh with a flood as He did in the days of Noah. That covenant still stands. It does not mean there will be no local floods, for we do see flooded areas and heavy rains in many places, but it does mean the earth itself will not be destroyed again by water. So it is right for us to pray for mercy and protection in these local storms while we rest in His larger promise.

Scripture says the floods have lifted up their voice and the floods lift up their waves, but the Lord on high is mightier than the noise of many waters. He is stronger than the roar we hear when wind howls and water rises. He is also our place of refuge. As He invited Noah to come into the ark to be safe through judgment, so He invites us to come into Christ, who is our ark of safety. In Him we are seen as righteous, not by our own goodness but through faith, and we are kept secure even when the storm rages.

We also see in the story of Paul at sea how the winds were contrary for a long time, how waves crashed over the ship and those aboard despaired of life and could not guide their own course, driven before the wind. Yet even there God was guiding and directing. Nothing happens by chance. He is in control in the storm, working all things together according to His purpose, even when we cannot understand the path or see the pattern until later.

So I pray with you that the Lord will speak peace to the wind, that He will hold back the waters where they threaten homes and lives, and that He will guard and comfort those who are afraid. May He be their shelter and rear guard, and may all who call on Him find in Jesus the true refuge who carries us safely through. May His might and mercy be known in the midst of this weather, and may He bring calm in His perfect way.
