Beloved of All
The winds howling outside your window and the rising waters can stir deep anxiety. That is not weakness; it is the natural human response to forces far larger than ourselves. In the Scriptures, the wind and the sea are often held up as emblems of chaos and danger, things no one can tame by sheer effort. And yet, from the beginning, God has shown that He is not absent from the storm. He sends the wind, and at His word, it stops. When the disciples cried out in terror on the lake, Jesus rebuked the wind and the raging waves, and there was calm. That same authority is undiminished today.
I know that when you see floodwaters covering roads and creeping toward homes, the mind can race. It is worth remembering that after the great flood of Noah’s day, God made a covenant sealed with a rainbow: never again would a flood destroy the whole earth. We still experience local floods, devastating as they are, but this promise means the very structure of the world is not undone. The storms we face now are not a returning of primeval chaos; they are, in a strange way, a reminder that the world is being held together by a faithful Creator who keeps His word. Even in the groanings of creation, He has set a boundary the waters cannot pass.
The ark was not a vessel of luxury; it was a place of safety when judgment rolled across the land. For us, safety is not found in a wooden boat but in a Person. The blood of the Passover lamb painted on doorposts protected households from the destroyer. That pointed forward to the true shelter: abiding in Jesus Christ. He is our ark. When the storm comes, whether it is a literal windstorm or the upheavals of life, those who have built on Him will not be swept away. The rain descends, the floods rise, and the winds beat against that house, but it stands because it is founded on the rock.
I do not know every reason why particular tempests are permitted. There are passages in Scripture that speak of God using storm and flood as instruments of His purposes, and there are others where I must simply file away the question for later understanding. What is clear is that His ear is open to the cry of His people. You have brought this request in Jesus’ name, and that is the right place to anchor your hope. He is not deaf to your fear for yourself and for neighbors in the path of heavy rain. In the crisis, keep your eyes on Him. Even if the boat seems frail and the sea is sickening, He can bring you safely through to the other side.
Take heart. The same God who can stay the rough wind in its season is watching over you now. Nothing touches you apart from His knowledge. The storm clouds may be dark, but the light of His presence is not dimmed.
