We hear your burden and we are standing with you in prayer for your marriage and for your son. Your heart to see God reverse this desire for divorce and to make your family whole again honors Him, because marriage is a lifelong covenant between a man and a woman that God Himself joins together. What therefore God has joined together, let no man separate, Matthew 19:6 and For I hate divorce, says Yahweh, the God of Israel, Malachi 2:16. We also hear that you have been apart for two and a half years and recently started dating again, and that after catching your wife in something there was a huge fight and now she wants a divorce. We grieve with you and with your ten year old son who longs for his family to be whole.
We want to speak truth in love about several things. God can restore what has been broken. I will restore to you the years that the swarming locust has eaten, Joel 2:25. Yet restoration requires repentance, forgiveness, and turning from anger and fighting to grace. Be angry, and don’t sin. Don’t let the sun go down on your wrath, Ephesians 4:26 and Let all bitterness, wrath, anger, outcry, and slander be put away from you, with all malice. And be kind to one another, tender hearted, forgiving each other, just as God also in Christ forgave you, Ephesians 4:31-32. A huge fight will not heal what was caught, but going to one another in truth, confessing sin, and forgiving as the Lord forgave us will. Bearing with one another and forgiving each other, if any man has a complaint against any, even as Christ forgave you, so you also do, Colossians 3:13.
If what you caught her in involved another person or sexual sin outside your marriage, we must address it plainly because you are still married in God’s eyes even while separated. Sex outside of marriage is adultery and fornication and is sin before God. We do not say this to condemn but to call to repentance so that healing can come. Jesus said that Moses permitted divorce because of hardness of heart but from the beginning it was not so, Matthew 19:8, and even where sexual immorality has occurred God’s heart is still for confession, forgiveness and reconciliation where possible. Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the assembly and gave himself up for it, Ephesians 5:25. Wives are called to respect and be faithful to their husbands, and both are called to not deprive one another and to not leave one another, as the wife should not leave her husband and the husband should not leave his wife, 1 Corinthians 7:10-11. Dating while still married should only be the pursuit of reconciliation with your own spouse toward the restoration of your marriage, not seeking others, because you are already bound together until death.
We also noticed your request asks for God to act but does not mention the name of Jesus Christ, and we must lovingly address this because it is only through Jesus that we have access to the Father and it is only through Him that we are saved. Jesus said, I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me, John 14:6 and There is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven that is given among men, by which we must be saved, Acts 4:12. If we confess with our mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in our heart that God raised him from the dead, we will be saved, Romans 10:9. We encourage you and your wife to both place your faith fully in Jesus Christ, to repent of all sin, and to come to God the Father in His name.
We pray together for you now.
Father in heaven, we come before You in the name of Jesus Christ and we lift this husband, his wife, and their ten year old son to You. Lord, You hate divorce and You love marriage, and You see this family that has been apart for so long and the pain of this recent fight and the word divorce that now hangs over them. We ask You to soften both hearts, to turn them from hardness and anger and to draw them to Yourself first and then to one another. Convict of all sin, bring it into the light, and grant true repentance and true forgiveness. Help this husband to love his wife as Christ loved the church, with patience, gentleness, and self control, and help his wife to turn from whatever she has been caught in and to honor her marriage vows. Lord, protect their son from bitterness and fear, let him see his parents humbled before You and restored by Your grace, for children are a heritage of Yahweh, Psalm 127:3. We ask You to reverse the desire for divorce, to close the door to the enemy, and to open a door to godly counsel, to pastoral help, and to daily prayer together if she is willing. Heal what has been broken over these two and a half years and make this marriage a testimony that honors You. We ask all this in the mighty name of Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior, amen.
We encourage you to seek godly pastoral counseling immediately, to continue to pray daily for your wife by name, to speak to her not in accusation but in love and truth, and to remain faithful to your covenant. Love covers a multitude of sins, 1 Peter 4:8, and with God all things are possible, Matthew 19:26. Do not pursue divorce and do not accept it as inevitable, pursue reconciliation, purity, and holiness, and trust the Lord to work in His timing as you both walk in obedience to Him.
