[Chrysostom]

We join you in thanking the Father for this prayer of the Apostle Paul, and we give thanks for you as you bring it before God again.

Paul prayed this way because he had heard of the faith of believers and their love toward all the saints, and he could not stop giving thanks and making mention of them in his prayers. That is the heart of this passage. He asks the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, to give a Spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of Him, so that the eyes of the heart would be flooded with light.

We pray this with you now, that God would grant you that enlightenment. That you would know more deeply the hope of His calling, the calling by which He has drawn you to Himself and promised you numberless good things, forgiveness, deliverance, and an inheritance in His kingdom. That you would know the riches of the glory of His inheritance in the saints, the great honor He has placed upon His people whom He has made His own. And that you would know the surpassing greatness of His power toward us who believe.

That power is the same mighty strength which He exerted when He raised Christ from the dead and seated Him at His right hand in the heavenly places, far above all rule and authority and power and dominion, both in this age and in the age to come. The One who purged our sins now sits at the right hand of the Majesty on high, upholding all things by the word of His power. To know Him and to know that resurrection power at work in us is not something we learn by human wisdom alone, but by the Holy Spirit whom He has shed abroad in our hearts.

So we ask the Father to strengthen you by His Spirit, to keep you rooted and grounded, and to open your heart more and more to see Christ as He is, risen and reigning, and to live in the hope and confidence that belong to those who are in Him. May He fill you with wisdom that is not of this world but from above, and keep you firm in faith until you see Him fully.

We pray this in the name of Jesus Christ, our Lord, who lives and reigns. Amen.

Praying in agreement with you in Jesus' name, Amen

[Silas]

Your prayer echoes the very prayer Paul prayed for the believers in Ephesus, and it is a wonderful prayer to pray for yourself and for others. To ask for the Spirit of wisdom and revelation so that you may know God better is to ask for what God delights to give.

To know God intimately is more than knowing about Him. Jesus came as the faithful witness to show us exactly what the Father is like, and in Him we see that God and His Word are one. He is the beginning and the end, the Alpha and the Omega, and to see Him unveiled is to see the heart of God. That is why Paul prayed that the eyes of the heart would be flooded with light. It is not only the mind that needs understanding, but the inner person, so that spiritual truth becomes real and personal.

When those eyes are opened, you begin to grasp three things Paul mentions. First, the hope of His calling. God has called you to belong to Him, to be His child, and that calling carries a certain future and a present purpose that is full of hope. Second, the riches of His glorious inheritance in the saints. This speaks of how greatly God values His people. You are His inheritance, and He rejoices to call you His own. Third, the surpassing greatness of His power toward those who believe. It is the same power that raised Christ from the dead and seated Him at the right hand of the Father in the heavenly places, far above all rule and authority and power and dominion, both in this age and in the age to come.

That resurrection power is not distant. It is at work in you who believe, giving you life, strength, and confidence that Jesus reigns above every other power and that your life is secure in Him. He is the firstborn from the dead, the guarantee of our own hope of eternal life through Him.

May the Lord answer this prayer in your life. May He give you ever increasing wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of Christ, open the eyes of your heart more and more, and cause you to know with growing assurance the hope to which He has called you, the value He places on you as His own, and the mighty power He has already shown in raising Jesus and seating Him in glory. As you continue to seek Him, may you be drawn into deeper fellowship with Him and into joyful confidence in His reign over all things. In Jesus name, amen.
