Warning Dreams form Holy Spirit While Sleeping, Job 33:12-17; Matt 2:12, Prophecy, Joel 2:28, Numb 12:6, Acts 16:9 Father, we come as little children in faith, contrary to all we see and hear, and thank You, "You are able to save forever those who come to God through Jesus, because He lives to make intercession for us," Heb 7:25, c.f. Rom 8:34.

We ask, with this husband for his wife, You give her a warning dream, as it is written in Job 33:14, "For God does speak—now one way, now another—though no one perceives it. 15 In a dream, in a vision of the night, when deep sleep falls on people, as they slumber in their beds, 16 He may speak in their ears and terrify them with warnings, 17 to turn them from wrongdoing and keep them from pride, 18 to preserve them from the pit, their lives from perishing by the sword." Again, as with the affairs concerning our father, Abraham, Gen 20:3, like him we are fully persuaded You are able to fulfill what You promise, Rom 4:21. Pour out Your Holy Spirit on her, as prophesied in in Joel 2:28, “And afterward, I will pour out my Spirit on all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy, your old will dream dreams, your youth will see visions. 29 Even on my servants, both men and women, I will pour out my Spirit in those days," Joel 2:28-29, c.f. Acts 2:17-18. Father, with humble confidence, give her, them, us dreams and visions underlining your will for us in Christ Jesus, as You have done from ancient times on those saved Matt 1:20, Matt 2:12, and unsaved alike, Gen 20:3, Gen 31:24, Dan 2:1, Dan 4:5, until present, Acts 19:6, and You will continue to though the future, Heb 13:8. Your arm is not too short, Num 11:23, especially to save, Isa 50:2, Isa 59:1.

Again, as little children, "we know You can do all things,"Job 42:2, That "nothing shall be impossible with God," Luke 1:27, "The things impossible with man are possible with God," Mark 10:27. We join with you as little children in faith and we thank our Father that you have come boldly through Jesus Christ who lives to make intercession for us. We rejoice that you know it is only through Him that we have access to God, for as it is written in Heb 7:25 He is able to save to the uttermost those who draw near to God through Him, seeing He ever lives to make intercession for them, and in Rom 8:34 Christ Jesus is He who died, yes rather, who was raised from the dead, who is at the right hand of God, who also makes intercession for us.

We agree with you concerning the power and faithfulness of our God to speak and to warn and to preserve His people. We affirm with you that God does indeed speak in dreams and visions, as the Scriptures you have cited so beautifully declare. In Job 33:14 God speaks once, yes twice, though man does not perceive it. Job 33:15 In a dream, in a vision of the night, when deep sleep falls on men, in slumbering on the bed Job 33:16 then He opens the ears of men, and seals their instruction Job 33:17 that He may withdraw man from his purpose, and hide pride from man. We remember also Num 12:6 where the Lord said, If there is a prophet among you, I Yahweh will make myself known to him in a vision. I will speak with him in a dream. And we remember how in Matt 2:12 being warned in a dream not to return to Herod, the wise men withdrew to their own country another way, and in Matt 1:20 an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream. We hold fast to Joel 2:28 It will happen afterward, that I will pour out my Spirit on all flesh and your sons and your daughters will prophesy. Your old men will dream dreams. Your young men will see visions, which was fulfilled as in Acts 2:17, and we remember Acts 16:9 where a vision appeared to Paul in the night.

At the same time we gently encourage you with the whole counsel of Scripture, that while God is able to do all things and nothing is impossible with Him as in Job 42:2, Luke 1:37 and Mark 10:27, and His arm is not too short to save as in Num 11:23 and Isa 59:1, His written Word remains our sure foundation and final authority. In Heb 1:1 God, having in the past spoken to the fathers through the prophets at many times and in various ways, Heb 1:2 has at the end of these days spoken to us by His Son. And in 2 Tim 3:16 Every Scripture is God-breathed and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for instruction in righteousness. Therefore we do not seek dreams above the Word, but we test all things. As it is written in 1 John 4:1 Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits, whether they are of God, and in 1 Thess 5:21 Test all things, and hold firmly that which is good. Any dream or vision that is truly from the Holy Spirit will never contradict Scripture, will exalt Christ, and will bear the fruit of turning us from wrongdoing and keeping us from pride, to preserve us from the pit as in Job 33:18.

We also affirm your marriage before the Lord, this husband praying for his wife, and we thank God for a union that seeks His will together in Christ Jesus. We pray that your courtship and marriage continues to honor Him in purity and faithfulness.

We pray together now for you both and for us all.

Father, in the name of Jesus Christ we come before Your throne of grace with humble confidence. We thank You that You are able to do all things and that You care for Your children even as we slumber. We ask according to Your will, if it pleases You, to speak to this dear wife and to this husband and to us in the night watches, to open our ears and seal instruction upon our hearts, to warn us and turn us from wrongdoing, from pride, from temptation, from sin and from the schemes of the evil one. Pour out Your Spirit upon us and grant us dreams and visions that underline Your will for us in Christ Jesus, if it serves Your glory and our good. Grant us wisdom as in James 1:5 to discern what is from You and what is not, that we would not be led astray by fear or deception or vain imaginations. Keep us from evil people and from the evil one, as You have promised in John 17:15 and 2 Thess 3:3. Lead us not into temptation but deliver us from the evil one as in Matt 6:13. Guide us into all truth by Your Holy Spirit as in John 16:13, that we would walk in obedience to Your Word and not lean on our own understanding. Preserve this wife, this husband, and all of us from the pit and from perishing, and keep our lives hidden in Christ. We thank You in advance, believing that You hear us when we ask according to Your will as in 1 John 5:14 and Mark 11:24, and that without faith it is impossible to please You as in Heb 11:6, but You reward those who diligently seek You. We trust Your unfailing love and Your power to save forever those who come to God through Jesus. We ask all this in the mighty and precious name of Jesus Christ our Lord, Amen.

We hear how deeply you love your wife and how much you want God's protection and guidance over her. That childlike trust you expressed, that God is able to keep and to lead those who come to Him through Jesus, is a beautiful place to pray from, and we join you in it.

We also hear your longing for God to speak to her so clearly she cannot miss it. We believe the Holy Spirit is our Helper and Counselor who does guide, convict, and comfort, and He does it in a balanced way through His power, through truth that never contradicts His Word, and through fruit that brings love and peace even when He corrects. Sometimes that guidance is quiet and inner, sometimes it comes through Scripture, prayer, or the counsel of others, and we can trust Him to choose the way and the timing that is truly best.

As you keep praying, it helps to keep the conversation open with your wife too in gentle, honest love. Sharing your concerns directly, without pressure, and staying rooted together in Scripture and prayer gives the Spirit room to work in both of your hearts day by day. If you have a trusted pastor, inviting him to walk with you both can also bring wisdom and steadiness.

Father, we thank You that You hear this husband's prayer for his wife. We ask You to draw them both closer to Jesus, guard them from evil and deception, and lead them into Your will with clarity and peace. Your earnest prayer has been heard and we join you in thanking God that He is able to save to the uttermost those who come unto God by Jesus, seeing He ever lives to make intercession for us. What a mercy that our hope rests not in dreams or visions but in the living Christ who pleads for His own at the right hand of the Father.

You have rightly remembered that God has spoken in dreams in time past, as in Job when He opens the ears of men and seals their instruction that He may withdraw man from his purpose and hide pride from man, and as He warned Joseph and the wise men. Yet remember also that the chief and blessed work of the Holy Spirit now is to glorify Christ, to take of the things of Christ and show them unto us, and to work by the Word of God for our conviction, conversion, consolation and sanctification. Faith comes by hearing and hearing by the Word of God, and it is by the gospel of Jesus Christ that the Spirit works in the hearts of men. We are to test all that claims to be of the Spirit by whether it honors the Lord Jesus and leads to holiness, for the Spirit lusts against the flesh and will drive out sin and present us blameless before the throne.

Therefore we exhort you to pray in the Holy Spirit and by the Holy Spirit, in His power and under His guidance, with a humble and contrite heart. Grieve not the Holy Spirit who has condescended to make your heart His abode. Search out the sin that would vex Him, slay it upon the spot, repent with tears, and live in the Spirit and give yourselves up fully to His divine anointing. A holy life is the workmanship of the Holy Spirit, and where He dwells there will be joy and peace and love and confidence toward God.

We will pray for you, for this husband and for his wife, that the Lord in His sovereign mercy would keep you all from temptation and from the evil one, from deception and from every false way, and preserve you from the pit. If it please Him to speak in the night season to turn the soul from wrongdoing, we shall praise Him, for His arm is not shortened that it cannot save. And if He rather speaks by His Word applied with power to the conscience, we shall praise Him still, for that is His ordinary and sure way. Above all we ask that He would show Christ to you afresh, His person, His blood which cleanses from all sin, His grace which delivers from the dominion of sin, that you may see Him and be kept in His way.

He who has promised is able to perform it, and nothing shall be impossible with God. Continue in prayer, continue in the Word, continue in dependence upon the Holy Spirit who dwells with you and shall be in you, and rest upon the faithful High Priest who lives to intercede. May the Lord keep you watching and praying, holy and humble, till He brings you into His glory. Amen.

We join you in prayer as you come like a little child in faith, trusting the promise that Jesus lives to make intercession for those who come to God through Him, and that He is able to save completely. That confidence from Hebrews 7:25 and Romans 8:34 is the right ground for every prayer for a husband and wife.

You have asked that God would give your wife a warning dream to turn her from wrongdoing and keep her from pride, as described in Job 33, and as God has at times spoken in dreams in Genesis, in Matthew, and as Joel prophesied about dreams and visions. We affirm with you that God is sovereign and nothing is impossible with Him, and that He has in history spoken in this way both to His people and to others to accomplish His purposes. We also want to encourage you with how Scripture teaches us to understand the work of the Holy Spirit now.

After Christ has taken away the curse and reconciled us to God through His death and resurrection, the Holy Spirit has been given to dwell in those who believe. The Spirit is not an impersonal force but a divine Person, one with the Father and the Son, and His work is to give life, to cleanse and refresh like water, to purify like fire, and to make us holy. He does this most clearly and most reliably through the Word of God, bringing conviction of sin, reminding us of Christ, and leading us in truth. Dreams in Scripture were one way God spoke at particular times, but they were never to be sought as the ordinary or required way of hearing from Him. The sure and steady voice of God for daily guidance is His written Word, applied to the heart by the Spirit, confirmed through prayer, wise counsel, and the life of the church.

For that reason we will not treat a dream as something God must give on demand, and we encourage you not to put your hope in seeking an experience, but in seeking Christ Himself. God is able to warn, to awaken conscience, to bring chastisement that is profitable and leads to holiness, and to draw a heart back from the pit whether it is through a dream in the night, through the clear teaching of Scripture, through the loving words of a spouse, or through the inner work of the Spirit convicting of sin and pointing to Jesus. Our prayer is that God in His wisdom would use whatever means He knows is best to keep your wife and you from temptation, deception, sin and the schemes of the evil one, and to turn hearts fully toward Christ.

We also encourage you as a husband to continue in faithful intercession, to speak the truth in love, to walk in thankfulness and self control, and to bring your home continually under the grace of the Word. Let your prayers be accompanied by patient love, by inviting your wife to hear Scripture with you, and by seeking help from mature believers who can walk with you both.

Let us pray together. Father, we thank You that Jesus ever lives to intercede for us. We ask for Your mercy on this husband and his wife. By Your Holy Spirit, who gives life and makes us clean, work in her heart to reveal any wrongdoing, to humble pride, and to preserve her from the pit. Keep them both from temptation and from the deceiver, guard them from evil, and lead them into truth. Cause Your Word to dwell richly in their home, so that they may discern Your will in Christ Jesus. Draw them both into deeper repentance, faith, and love for Your Son, in whom alone is salvation. Your prayer reflects a childlike trust in the living Christ who intercedes for us, and that is exactly where prayer should begin. Scripture assures us that Jesus lives to intercede for those who come to God through Him, and that nothing is impossible with God. He is able to do all things and to keep His promises, and He is able to save completely.

You asked about warning dreams while sleeping, and you pointed to passages where God did speak in that way. The Bible does show this. In Job it says God speaks in a dream, in a vision of the night when deep sleep falls on people, to warn them and turn them from wrongdoing and pride and to keep them from the pit. God warned Abimelech in a dream concerning Abraham, and He warned Laban concerning Jacob, and He gave dreams to Nebuchadnezzar. In the New Testament an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream, and the wise men were warned in a dream not to return to Herod. Joel prophesied that in the last days God would pour out His Spirit on all people, and sons and daughters would prophesy and old men would dream dreams and young men would see visions, a promise Peter quoted when the Spirit was poured out.

That promise was fulfilled when the Holy Spirit was given on the day of Pentecost. Before that, the Spirit was at work from the beginning, moving over the waters, convicting of sin and drawing people to Christ, but the gift of the Spirit dwelling within and coming upon believers was given after Jesus ascended. That pouring out was a one time giving of the Spirit to the church. After that there is never a command to wait or tarry for the Spirit in the same way. He has been given.

This helps us understand how God guides today. Once the Spirit came, He began to speak to and direct His people directly. The church was then guided more directly by the Spirit, and the practice of casting lots to know the will of God was set aside. Every person who truly trusts in Jesus has the Holy Spirit dwelling within. No one can genuinely confess that Jesus is Lord except by the Holy Spirit, and the body of the believer becomes the temple of the Holy Spirit. Paul describes this indwelling Spirit as a seal, the mark of God's ownership, and as the down payment of our inheritance until the full redemption comes. Before conversion the Spirit is with us convicting and drawing, at conversion He comes to live within us, and then we are called to be filled with the Spirit and led by the Spirit. As many as are led by the Spirit of God are the sons of God, and Jesus Himself, full of the Spirit, was led by the Spirit, leaving us an example.

The Spirit also empowers. You shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you shall be witnesses. The baptism with the Holy Spirit is not only the Spirit within for character and likeness to Christ, but the Spirit upon for power and overflowing life. On Pentecost they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak as the Spirit prompted their speech, and afterward the Spirit said separate Paul and Barnabas for the work to which I have called them, and sent them forth. In the house of Cornelius, while Peter was preaching, the Holy Spirit fell upon those who heard, and Peter recognized it as the same baptism with the Spirit that Jesus had promised.

God is certainly able to give a dream or vision if He wills, and He has done so for both those who knew Him and those who did not. Yet the normal and sure way He warns, corrects, and keeps His people now is through the indwelling Spirit working through the Word of God, producing conviction, guiding into truth, and conforming us to the image of Jesus. The Spirit bears witness to Jesus and perfects the love of God within us. That is why the call of Scripture is to be filled with the Spirit, to walk by the Spirit, and to be sensitive and open to His leading each day.

So continue to pray for your wife as you have, with humble confidence that God hears. Ask not only for a specific experience in sleep, but for the deeper work only the Spirit can do. Pray that the Spirit who convicts of sin and draws to Jesus would work in her heart, turn her from any wrongdoing, keep her from pride and deception, and preserve her from the pit. Pray that she would be kept from temptation and from the evil one, as Jesus taught us to pray, and that she would be guarded from lies, fear, and the influence of evil people. Pray that she would be filled with the Spirit and led by the Spirit, that the Word of God would dwell richly in her, and that the love of Christ would be perfected in her.

It is good to thank God in advance, trusting His power and goodness, while also submitting to His wisdom in how He chooses to answer. He knows how best to speak to each heart so that it will be heard and heeded. Keep bringing her before the throne of grace, keep sharing the truth in love, keep abiding in Scripture together where the Spirit most clearly speaks, and trust the One who is able to keep you both and to present you blameless.

May the Father fill you both with His Spirit, give you power to be faithful witnesses of Jesus, conform you more to Christ, and keep you from all evil, that you may walk in His will with peace and assurance in His name.
