Your desire not to follow merely your own personal goals but to be led by the Lord is itself a gracious work, for naturally we do not like being guided, but the grace of God gives us acquiescence in the divine will and bowing with submission to that will we are furnished with unerring guidance.
You have quoted that word, Where there is no vision, the people perish. That vision is not a fleeting fancy of our own minds, but the revealed counsel of God, the Word out of God's mouth by which a man may live. Give me but a Word out of God's mouth, and I can live upon it, but all the words out of man's mouth apart from divine inspiration are unsatisfying. Where that Word is withheld or despised, the people cast off restraint, but where it is received and obeyed, there is life and order and hope.
We do not pray that you should chase after mere dreams, but that you should be as one whom God has taken into His own school. O God, You have taught me from my youth, and until this time have I declared Your wondrous works. He teaches His pupils by His Word, by His providence, and by His Spirit, educating faith and increasing divine graces, and He makes them to observe His work and to wonder at it. So be guided first by the general directions given in God's Word, and by the great principles infused in every man who takes God for his Guide, to avoid everything that is evil and to cleave to that which is good and holy. Haste is the author of a great deal of mischief in human life, but when self goes, God comes in, and when human wisdom goes, then God's wisdom appears.
Remember also that the purpose of God is infallible. The whole was written from the beginning, He knew everything of it, He has never altered a single sentence nor changed a single line of the divine purpose, and yet this is the miracle of miracles, that the creatures are free, absolutely free, and yet the divine purpose stands. You are only as a wave upon His great sea, but His sea is still moving on toward its appointed end. Therefore you may rest not upon a vision of your own devising, but upon His counsel which shall guide you and afterward receive you to glory. On earth there is no real glory for us unless we are guided by God's counsel.
We join you in prayer to the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning, from whom cometh every good gift and every perfect gift.
Heavenly Father, we thank You that You do not change like shifting shadows and that You fulfil what You have purposed. We ask in the name of Jesus Christ Your Son, who is the propitiation for our sins and in whom alone is salvation, that You would grant to this Your servant not confusion nor self willed imagination, but clear sight from Your Word. Teach as You teach Your own pupils, open the eyes to behold wondrous things out of Your law, and guide with Your counsel day by day. Purify the heart that it may see Your glory, and make Your wisdom to appear where human wisdom fails. Let every plan be brought into captivity to the obedience of Christ, and let Your will be done. Lead in Your own time and by Your own means, and keep from haste and from willful blindness to any part of Your will. This we ask in Jesus mighty and powerful name, amen.
