Proverbs 29:18 says "Where there is no vision, the people perish:..." Please pray that I receive visions from God in Jesus' name, so that I don't just follow my own personal goals.


Heavenly Father, we thank you that you do not change like shifting shadows. You fulfil the visions you give us. Hallelujah!

It is written „Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning.

We join with you in this beautiful desire to seek God's vision above your own personal goals and we thank you for sharing this request with us in Jesus' name.

We love your heart after Proverbs 29:18 which says Where there is no revelation, the people cast off restraint, but one who keeps the law is blessed. True vision is not merely a personal ambition or a plan we make for ourselves, it is revelation from God that keeps us anchored in His law and His will, so that we do not cast off restraint and wander. And we rejoice with you in the truth you quoted from James 1:17 that Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom can be no variation, nor turning shadow. Our Father does not change like shifting shadows, and what He reveals He is faithful to fulfill in His perfect time. As it is written in Jeremiah 29:11 For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, says Yahweh, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you hope and a future.

We encourage you to continue to seek His vision first through His Word, for Your word is a lamp to my feet, and a light for my path Psalm 119:105. God still speaks and we see His promise in Acts 2:17 that It will be in the last days, says God, that I will pour out my Spirit on all flesh. Your sons and your daughters will prophesy. Your young men will see visions. Your old men will dream dreams. Yet we also test every impression, dream, or vision against Scripture, for His written Word is our sure foundation. We are called to Trust in Yahweh with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight Proverbs 3:5-6. As you surrender your own goals, He will either confirm them, redirect them, or replace them with something far better that bears eternal fruit.

Heavenly Father, we thank You that You are the Father of lights with whom there is no variation. We thank You that You are a God who reveals Your will to Your children and that You do not leave us to perish without vision. We ask in the mighty name of Jesus that You would pour out Your Spirit upon our dear one and grant clear revelation and godly vision that is aligned with Your Word. Remove any striving after selfish ambition and give a heart that truly desires Your will above all. Make Your paths straight and Your voice clear, whether through Your Word, through the gentle leading of Your Holy Spirit, or through godly counsel. Give patience to wait on You, wisdom to discern, and faith to obey what You show. Fulfill the vision You give for Your glory, that this life may bear fruit and be a blessing to many. We ask that You keep this one close, rooted in Your law and walking in obedience, so that there may be blessing and not restraint cast off. We pray all of this in the precious and powerful name of Jesus Christ our Lord and Savior, amen.

We appreciate your honest desire to follow God's direction rather than just your own plans. Wanting vision in that sense shows humility and a real hunger to be led by Him.

We have found vision is less often a sudden picture and more often a growing clarity about God's calling that shapes our daily choices. It gives us an appetite for what He values and steadies us when our own goals pull us another way. That kind of vision usually grows as we stay close to Him, listen in prayer, stay rooted in His Word, and stay open to the counsel of mature believers who know us.

A simple next step that may help is to set aside a quiet few minutes each day this week to bring your plans before the Lord and ask Him to align them with His purposes, then share what you are sensing with a trusted pastor or mentor who can help you weigh it.

Father, we lift our friend to You. Give clarity and a heart to follow where You lead. Guard from self direction and draw them closer to Your will. Lead step by step and give peace in trusting You. In Jesus' name, amen.

Your prayer shows a heart that would be led of God and not of self, and therein is true wisdom. The text you quote, Where there is no vision, the people perish, speaks not of the fancies of our own minds or the mere goals we set for ourselves, but of that prophetic revelation, that Word out of God's mouth, by which men live. Give us but a Word from God, and we can live upon it, but all the words out of man's mouth, apart from Divine Inspiration, must be as unsatisfying food as if men tried to live on stones.

You ask for visions, and I would have you seek that heavenly vision which God gives to His own pupils. David could say, O God, You have taught me from my youth, and until this time have I declared Your wondrous works. So the Lord still teaches His people, not always by sights and dreams, but by opening the eyes to behold His Word and His work in Christ. He puts object lessons before us and makes us to observe His wondrous grace, until we wonder at it and speak of it.

Remember also that with our Father of lights there is no variableness, neither shadow of turning. Every good gift and every perfect gift cometh down from Him. What He purposes stands. The whole was written there from the beginning, He knew everything of it, He has never altered a single sentence nor changed a single line of the divine purpose. And this is the miracle of miracles, that while we are free, absolutely free, yet the divine purpose stands. Therefore you need not fear that if you yield yourself to Him you shall miss His way. If your calling is real, rest assured it is divine. It is a high calling, a heavenly calling, a calling from on high that lifts up the heart and sets it upon heavenly things, upon eternity, heaven, and holiness.

Would you have this vision? Then hear how Jesus still calls, Come unto Me, all you that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. It is a man's voice that speaks, albeit that it is also Divine. When by what we call effectual calling He calls His own by name, the sheep hear His voice and they rise up at once and follow Him, for they know His voice, and He leads them out. Sometimes the Lord calls His saints by name and leads them out into higher attainments in the Divine Life. That is the vision you most need, to see Christ bleeding as the witness of God's hatred for sin and of God's love for sinners, for herein is love, not that we loved God, but that He loved us and sent His Son to be the propitiation for our sins.

Heavenly Father, we thank You that You do not change like shifting shadows, and that You fulfil the purposes You have ordained. Every good and perfect gift is from above, from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness. We ask in the mighty name of Jesus that You would grant to this soul not the vision of self will, but the heavenly vision of Christ and of Your will revealed in Your Word. Teach as You teach Your pupils from youth, open the eyes to see Your wondrous works, and effectually call the heart to follow where You lead. Let the high calling of God in Christ Jesus be the prize pursued, forgetting those things which are behind and reaching forth unto those which are before. Your desire to follow God's direction rather than only your own personal goals is good and pleasing to Him, and we join you in bringing this before the Lord.

The verse you mentioned, Proverbs 29:18, is often understood as speaking about mystical sights, but in its context the word translated vision means the revealed word and counsel of God. Where there is no prophetic revelation, no preaching and hearing of God's word, the people cast off restraint and perish. It is not speaking of private pictures or new revelations to guide our ambitions, but of the need for God's word to be before us so we do not wander.

This is why we can pray with confidence that God will give you clear sight without requiring a sensible vision. In the days of the apostles there was a sound of a mighty wind and visions of fiery tongues, and the Spirit descended like a dove so that those present might have it pointed out to them that Jesus is the Son of God. Those signs were given for those who did not yet believe, to manifest what had not yet been fully revealed. For us who have the completed Scriptures, faith suffices instead of all such sensible signs. We receive the things once manifested by them through the word itself, and the Spirit comes to us at work in our hearts as we hear and believe.

What you truly need, and what God delights to give, is what Scripture calls a healthy eye of the understanding. As a disordered eye mistakes the object before it, so a mind made turbid by confusion mistakes God's will. When the eye is healthy and free from distorted and imaginary phantoms, it recognizes what is true. That health comes when God opens our understanding to His word, so that we see Christ clearly and walk according to His ways rather than our own plans.

Every good and perfect gift does indeed come down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variableness, and His greatest gift to guide you is His word illuminated by His Spirit, which does not change like shifting shadows.

Heavenly Father, we thank You that You do not change and that You fulfill what You have promised in Your word. We ask in the name of Jesus that You grant to this dear one not a pursuit of signs, but a clear and healthy spiritual sight. Open the eyes of the understanding to know Your will as revealed in Scripture. Give wisdom to discern Your ways, courage to lay down personal goals where they do not align with Your counsel, and faith to trust that Your word is sufficient to direct every step.
