Vision

Beloved of All
Proverbs 29:18 says "Where there is no vision, the people perish:..." Please pray that I receive visions from God in Jesus' name, so that I don't just follow my own personal goals.

Heavenly Father, we thank you that you do not change like shifting shadows. You fulfil the visions you give us. Hallelujah!

It is written „Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning.
In Jesus' mighty and powerful name, amen.

We join with you in this desire to seek God's vision for your life rather than simply following your own personal goals, and we thank you for praying in the name of Jesus, for it is only through Him that we have access to the Father.

We love your heart after Proverbs 29:18 which says Where there is no revelation, the people cast off restraint; but one who keeps the law is blessed. True vision is not merely a personal plan or ambition, but divine revelation that comes from God and keeps us within His blessed boundaries. We also rejoice with you in the truth you quoted that Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom can be no variation, nor turning shadow James 1:17. Because He does not change like shifting shadows, we can trust that any true vision He gives, He will also be faithful to fulfill in His perfect timing.

We want to encourage you that God does still speak and guide His people, and Scripture promises in the last days your young men will see visions Acts 2:17. At the same time, we are taught that God's primary and most certain way of giving us vision today is through His written Word and the leading of the Holy Spirit. Personal goals are not wrong in themselves when they are surrendered to Christ, but we are called to Trust in Yahweh with all your heart, and don’t lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight Proverbs 3:5-6. Godly vision will never contradict Scripture, so we encourage you to test all things and to seek wisdom daily, for If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach; and it will be given to him James 1:5.

We also remember the promise For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, says Yahweh, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you hope and a future Jeremiah 29:11, and His gentle assurance I will instruct you and teach you in the way which you shall go. I will counsel you with my eye on you Psalm 32:8. To receive His vision we must remain abiding in Christ, in prayer, in the Word, and in obedience, waiting patiently for His counsel rather than striving to manufacture a vision ourselves.

We pray together for you now.

Heavenly Father, we thank You that You are the Father of lights who does not change and that every good and perfect gift comes from Your hand. We lift up this dear one to You in the mighty name of Jesus Christ, and we ask that You pour out Your wisdom and revelation upon them. Grant them not just personal goals, but Your divine vision for their life, clear, pure, and aligned with Your Word. Help them to discern Your voice above their own desires and the noise of this world, and to test every spirit to see whether it is from You. Lead them by Your Holy Spirit, instruct them and teach them in the way they should go, and make their paths straight as they acknowledge You in all their ways. Give them a heart that delights to obey Your law and to walk in Your will, that they may be blessed and bear fruit for Your kingdom. Fulfill the vision You have for them in Your perfect timing for Your glory. In Jesus' mighty and powerful name we pray, amen.

Thank you for letting us pray with you about this. We hear how much you want your life to be shaped by what God wants, not just your own plans, and that desire itself honors Him.

We have found that the vision God gives is often less like a sudden picture and more like a growing clarity as we walk with Him. It forms as we stay close to Him in prayer, stay rooted in His Word, and let others who know us and love Him help us weigh what we are sensing. It keeps our hearts turned toward what is above rather than just what we can imagine for ourselves, and it leads to steady, faithful steps.

One simple practice that may help is to set aside a regular, unhurried time to bring your hopes and plans before the Lord and ask Him to shape them, then write down what you sense and share it with a trusted pastor or mature believer who can pray and discern with you over time.

We are praying for you.

Father, we thank You for this hunger to follow You. Grant our friend wisdom and quiet confidence as they seek You, help them to recognize Your leading and to walk in it with peace. Guide their steps and keep their heart close to You. In Jesus' name, amen.

It is a good thing that you would be led by the Lord and not by your own designs, for naturally we do not like being guided, yet grace teaches us to desire it.

You have quoted the proverb truly, Where there is no vision, the people perish, and that vision is not a fanciful dream of our own making, but the revelation of the mind of God. Give me but a Word out of God's mouth and I can live upon it, but all the words out of man's mouth must be as unsatisfying food. The true vision which keeps the soul from perishing is that which is given in God's Word, where there are general directions and great principles by which He guides His people with His counsel.

Remember also that God's purpose is still moving on. The whole was written there from the beginning, He knew everything of it, He has never altered a single sentence nor changed a single line of the divine purpose, and this is the miracle of miracles, that the creature is free, absolutely free, and yet the divine purpose stands. Your personal goals, like waves upon the sea, seem to advance and retire, but to be guided by His counsel is to be carried by the great sea of His purpose itself. Therefore the prayer to be prayed is not only for sights and impressions, but that you may be God's pupil all your life, taught by Him from your youth, and made willing in the day of His power to do the divine bidding.

And take care to put the question personally, Have you received the Holy Spirit since you believed. For if when you believed you had not a life imparted by the Holy Spirit, your believing was a dead believing. We must continue to live by receiving. We received Christ Jesus the Lord at the first, and now we receive the Holy Spirit, and by His fullness we are made ready for service. It is the Spirit who must go with the Word of God, or it is so much wasted breath.

Let us pray together.

Heavenly Father, Father of lights with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning, from whom cometh down every good gift and every perfect gift, we thank You that You do not change and that You fulfil the visions You give. We ask in the mighty and powerful name of Jesus that You would grant to this soul not the following of personal goals, but a true vision from Yourself. Teach this Your pupil, guide with Your counsel, pour out Your Holy Spirit that there may be receiving of His power and fullness even now, and cause acquiescence in the divine will to dethrone obstinacy and haste. Lead by Your Word, establish the heart in Your infallible purpose, and afterward receive to glory, for Christ's sake. Amen.

Heal Me Lord Jesus Spirit, Soul, And Body

Your desire to follow God's guidance rather than only your own personal goals is good and right, and I am glad you have brought it to prayer.

The verse you mention, Proverbs 29:18, is often understood as a call for personal dreams or mystical experiences, but in its context the word translated vision means prophetic revelation, the revealed Word of God. Where that revelation is neglected, the people cast off restraint. The verse is not promising that every believer will receive private visions on request, but teaching that we need God's revealed truth to guide us, and we have that sure revelation in Scripture.

The homilies help us understand how God has given visions. He does not give them on demand or as a mark of greater spirituality. To the Virgin and to the shepherds a marvelous vision was given because of their need, but to Joseph, who was full of faith, it was not given openly in the same way, and when it was given it was to confirm what was already in his heart and to guide him. At Pentecost there was a sound of a mighty wind and fiery tongues appeared, but not for the apostles' sake, rather for the sake of the Jews who were present, so that the Son of God might be pointed out. The teaching there is that upon every believer at baptism the Spirit comes, but since then we have no need of sensible vision, faith sufficing instead of all, for signs are not for those who believe but for those who do not believe.

This does not mean God cannot grant a vision if He wills. He knows the secrets of the heart and reveals according to His wisdom and purpose, as He did with Peter at Joppa and with Paul. Yet the pattern of Scripture is that God has now given us His complete Word, and the ordinary way He gives vision and direction is by opening the eyes of our understanding through that Word, by the Holy Spirit, so that we are not led by a disordered imagination but by a healthy vision kept clear through obedience.

So my prayer for you is not that you would chase experiences, but that you would see Christ more clearly in Scripture and be led by Him away from merely personal goals toward His will.

Heavenly Father, we thank You that You do not change like shifting shadows and that every good and perfect gift comes down from You, the Father of lights. We thank You that You have revealed Yourself fully in Your Son and in Your Word. I pray for this dear believer who wants to follow You. Grant clear sight through Your Word, give wisdom and understanding, and keep the eye of the understanding healthy and free from confusion. Help him to seek Your will in Scripture, in prayer, and in faithful obedience, and to trust that faith in what You have already revealed is sufficient. If it pleases You to encourage him in any extraordinary way, we trust Your wisdom, but above all make him rooted in Christ, who alone is our salvation and our guide. Lead him away from self directed plans and establish his steps in Your purposes. In the mighty name of Jesus we pray, amen.
