Proverbs 29:18 says "Where there is no vision, the people perish:..." Please pray that I receive visions from God in Jesus' name, so that I don't just follow my own personal goals.


Heavenly Father, we thank you that you do not change like shifting shadows. You fulfil the visions you give us. Hallelujah!

It is written „Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning.

We join with you in this desire to not follow your own personal goals but to follow the vision and revelation that comes from God, and we thank you for praying in the mighty name of Jesus, for it is only through Him that we have access to the Father.

We love your heart for Proverbs 29:18, and we want to gently share what that vision truly means so your prayer can be even more rooted in truth. In the World English Bible that verse says, Where there is no revelation, the people cast off restraint; but one who keeps the law is blessed. Proverbs 29:18. The vision spoken of here is not primarily a mystical picture or a personal ambition, but the revealed Word and will of God. When His Word and His prophetic revelation are absent, people wander without restraint. When His Word guides us, we are blessed as we obey it. So the greatest vision we can seek is to know and obey what God has already revealed in Scripture, and then to walk faithfully in whatever specific leading He gives by His Spirit that aligns with that Word.

We rejoice that you quoted, Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom can be no variation, nor turning shadow. James 1:17. You are right, our Father does not change like shifting shadows, and what He promises He is faithful to fulfill. We also remember, Your word is a lamp to my feet, and a light for my path. Psalm 119:105. This reminds us that God's primary way of giving vision is through His Word illuminated by the Holy Spirit.

We do believe God still speaks and guides, for it is written, It will be in the last days, says God, that I will pour out my Spirit on all flesh. Your sons and your daughters will prophesy. Your young men will see visions. Your old men will dream dreams. Acts 2:17. And we are encouraged to ask for wisdom, But if any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach; and it will be given to him. James 1:5. Yet we are also cautioned not to lean on our own understanding or to chase experiences apart from Scripture. We are told, Trust in Yahweh with all your heart, and don’t lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight. Proverbs 3:5-6. And, Don’t be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may prove what is the good, well-pleasing, and perfect will of God. Romans 12:2.

So we encourage you to continue seeking God through diligent prayer, through daily reading and meditating on His Word, through obedience to what you already know is His will, and through fellowship with mature believers who can help you test what you sense. Any vision or leading that truly comes from God will never contradict Scripture, will exalt Christ, and will produce the fruit of the Spirit.

Heavenly Father, we thank You that You are the Father of lights with whom there is no variation, and that every good and perfect gift comes from Your hand. We thank You for this one who does not want to perish without vision and does not want to merely follow personal goals. Father, we ask in Jesus' name that You pour out Your wisdom and revelation upon them. Open the eyes of their heart to see Your Word more clearly, for Your Word is a lamp to our feet. Give them a holy vision for their life that is centered on Christ and aligned with Your perfect will. If it pleases You, grant visions and dreams that are truly from Your Spirit, and give them clear discernment to test all things and hold fast to what is good. Lead them away from selfish ambition and into Your thoughts toward them, for we know You say, For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, says Yahweh, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you hope and a future. Jeremiah 29:11. Make their path straight as they acknowledge You in all their ways, and fulfill the vision You give them for Your glory. Keep them humble, obedient, and faithful to keep Your law, that they may be blessed. We ask all this in the mighty and powerful name of Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior, amen.

We appreciate you sharing this desire so honestly. Wanting God to shape your direction rather than just chasing your own plans is a humble and good desire, and we are glad to pray with you for clear leading.

We find that when we ask God for vision, He often answers not only in a moment of seeing something new, but in the steady way He forms our hearts as we walk with Him day by day. Staying close to Him in prayer, staying rooted in His Word, and staying open to wise counsel from mature believers helps us learn to recognize His leading and hold our own ideas more lightly.

One practice that may help is to set aside a few unhurried minutes a few times a week to bring your plans before the Lord, write down what you sense He is putting on your heart, and then talk it through with a trusted pastor or mentor who knows you well. Over time that can bring clarity about what is from Him and what is simply your own ambition.

Father, we thank You for this child of Yours who wants to follow You. Grant wisdom, quiet confidence, and a clear sense of Your will step by step. Guard from striving and lead in Your perfect way. In Jesus' name we pray, amen.

God, bless me to have an ever growing closer stronger, more intimate relationship with You. Bless me with the love, desire, strength, and the spirit of obedience to always delight myself in You, seek first Your kingdom, Your righteousness, and to always respect and obey You. Bless me to know You, the way You want me to know You. So that I will trust You with my life and anyway that You move in my life. Bless me to trust You with all my heart, lean not to my own understanding, acknowledge You in all my ways, and allow You to direct my footsteps and actions. Bless me with knowledge, wisdom, and understanding in all You have called me to do.

God heal me in every area of my life. Deliver and cleanse me of everything in my life that doesn't honor You. Transform and renew my mind. Bless me with love, power, and a sound mind. Let the mind that is in Christ Jesus be in me. Bless me to have and operate with a God-conscious-solution-focused-heart-mind-spirit-and-attitude. Bless me to have a God Kingdom Culture Mentality. God be with me as a mighty warrior. Let no weapon formed against me prosper. Protect me from all the plans of my enemies and the plans of the enemy of my soul. There is a holy wisdom in your desire not to follow your own personal goals, but to be led by the Lord, and I thank God for it. You quote well that where there is no vision the people perish, and you would understand that word aright. The vision there spoken of is not a private dream or a sudden sight granted to fancy, but the prophetic revelation, the Word out of God's mouth by which He makes His mind and will known. Give me but a Word out of God's mouth and I can live upon it, but all the words out of man's mouth, apart from Divine Inspiration, must be as unsatisfying food as if men tried to live on stones. What you need, and what I pray the Lord to give you, is that true vision which comes by His counsel in Holy Scripture.

David tells us that he had been God's pupil all his life, saying, O God, You have taught me from my youth, and until this time have I declared Your wondrous works. So would I have you be God's pupil still, taught by His many dealings, chastened but never cast out, made to observe His work and to wonder at it. The Lord guides His people first by the general directions given in His Word, and then by great principles infused in the heart, such as to avoid everything that is evil and to bow with submission to the Divine will. By that very acquiescence we are furnished with unerring guidance. Wisdom, when attended with Divine love and tenderness, invites us to run into her arms.

Remember also that the great divine sea of His purpose is still moving on. No single sentence nor single line of the divine purpose has He ever altered, and it is the miracle of miracles that while we are free, absolutely free, yet His purpose stands. You need not fear that if you yield yourself to His counsel you shall miss His end for you. He who sent from above and drew David out of many waters will send from above to you, not to gratify curiosity, but to deliver and to direct.

Heavenly Father, we thank You that with You there is no variableness, neither shadow of turning, and that every good gift and every perfect gift cometh down from the Father of lights. Fulfil Your own purpose in this dear soul. Grant not merely that which nature might crave, but that clear sight of Christ and of Your will revealed in Scripture, that vision which keeps the soul from perishing. Make this one Your pupil, guided by Your counsel day by day, and afterward received to glory. Teach the heart to love Your Word, to delight in Your wondrous works, and to declare them with pen and voice for Your praise. Keep this life from hasty self choosing, and establish it in quiet confidence in Your infallible purpose, through Jesus Christ our Lord, in whose mighty name we ask it, amen.
